00:00<dsplayer14>No you will still need it
00:00<jay__>Good... I think the wiki should be able to guide me through that too anyway
00:00<jay__>Are there any components of xorg or otherwise I can get rid of?
00:01<jay__>I probably need the driver I'm using right now as a fallback, right?
00:01<dsplayer14>Yeah you have a lot of uneccesary drivers installed, I suppose you can free some space if you delete them, hold on ill make a list
00:01<jay__>But then there's the other one you say I have installed but not configured
00:01<jay__>Okay cool, thanks
00:02<dsplayer14>Yeah, the one you are using is (Im assuming) vesa. The one that wasnt configured was the open source one (xserver-xorg-video-intel)
00:02<dsplayer14>vesa is the fallback
00:02-!-aldebarian2 [~flushaway@177.97.226.104] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
00:05<jay__>How can I get rid of the open source driver and its dependencies?
00:05<dsplayer14>sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-intel
00:06<dsplayer14>Hold on, almost done with that list, just wanna make sure I dont delete anything that shouldnt be deleted
00:06<jay__>Of course, why did I even ask
00:06<jay__>Okay
00:06<dsplayer14>after you run that first command, run sudo apt-get autoremove to get rid of any other packages
00:07<jay__>I knew that too not sure why i asked lol
00:07<dsplayer14>that are not needed. It wont delete anything important
00:07-!-cierpliwy [~quassel@85-222-105-140.home.aster.pl] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:08<jay__>I will run these commands as soon as aptitude isnt busy

00:11<jay__>Done
00:12-!-m0li [~m0li@190.74.230.202] has quit [Quit: */]
00:12<dsplayer14>Ok, Ill put the packages in pastebin (the ones to remove)
00:12<dsplayer14>these are just a few, I am still checking on the others
00:13<jay__>I don't know which tarball to download from intel
00:13<dsplayer14>http://paste.debian.net/182028
00:13<dsplayer14>Are you following the wiki page?
00:15<jay__>those drivers are being uninstalled thanks
00:15<dsplayer14>No prob
00:15<jay__>The wiki says the instructions dont apply because the driver didnt used to be distributed as a tarball
00:16<jay__>So it doesn't say which one to pick
00:16<dsplayer14>didnt?
00:16<jay__>http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/embedded/hwsw/software/emgd#download
00:17<jay__>Yes the instructions were written when they only distributed as exe and you had to extract with wine
00:17<dsplayer14>Oh my...

00:20<dsplayer14>argh, this is confusing me.
00:21<jay__>there is meego and fedora... no .deb
00:22<jay__>both are for old kernel versions...
00:22<dsplayer14>I've been looking around this site: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/index.html
00:23<dsplayer14>Specifically this page: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/2012.02.html since you are using kernel 3,2

00:25<sney_>there is no proprietary intel driver. Intel contributes their drivers to the linux kernel.
00:25<sney_>This is why a lot of linux users prefer intel graphics over nvidia or ati
00:25<jay__>Oh fantastic. Then what was the driver I uninstalled?
00:26<dsplayer14>The open source one...
00:26<dsplayer14>but whats the diff between that and this site?
00:26<dsplayer14>I use an ATI card which is why I am completely clueless on this. I apologize
00:26<jay__>So it looks like the intel site doesnt have the version for the new kernel but its included with the kernel
00:26<jay__>its okay
00:27<jay__>im clueless too. nvidia is so easy to set up
00:27<jay__>but you already knew im clueless
00:27<jay__>haha
00:28<dsplayer14>So, you want to install the one from debians repos?
00:28<dsplayer14>the one we uninstalled?
00:28<sney_>jay__: since you're using wheezy, try asking about your original issue in #debian-next
00:28<jay__>Seems like the logical choice. Should I just go about reinstalling the one i unonstalled?
00:29<sney_>yes
00:29<jay__>my original issue? with dolphin? that was solved
00:30<jay__>okay i will run apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel then. How do i switch to this driver when its installed then?
00:30<dsplayer14>Well sney said that because you might get better help in that channel. Since they use Wheezy or sid Im assuming
00:30<dsplayer14>That part, I dont know
00:30<sney_>jay__: it's enabled by default. as the topic says, #debian-next is the wheezy support channel. also, you're using the wrong kernel unless your computer is older than a Pentium II.
00:31<jay__>I thought 486 kernel is 32 bit and 686 kernel is 64 bit?
00:31<sney_>for your resolution issue try googling "xorg.conf resolution" and follow the directions you find - doesn't matter what distro - and make an xorg.conf by example.
00:32<sney_>No. amd64 is 64-bit (intel and amd), 686 is 32-bit, 486 is pre-Pentium II 32-bit.
00:32<jay__>Well, crap.
00:32<sney_>the 686 and 486 kernels are interchangeable. just install the applicable linux-image package.
00:32<jay__>I was confused about that when I installed. it was very undocumented
00:33<jay__>okay
00:33<jay__>Well i dont want to use the vesa driver...]
00:34<jay__>i will be using this computer for gaming so i want the intel one. just need to figure out how to switch over
00:34<sney_>you won't, if you have an intel gpu the intel driver will work on its own. if you create an xorg.conf from an example like I suggested, then you will just need to supply Driver "intel" in the "Device" section. this will make sense if you look at an example of an xorg.conf
00:35<sney_>also, make sure you have libdrm-intel1 installed.
00:36<dsplayer14>Thats what I thought. So it would look like:
00:36<dsplayer14>Section "Device"
00:36<dsplayer14> Identifier "Intel"
00:36<dsplayer14> Driver "intel"
00:36<dsplayer14>EndSection
00:36-!-dsplayer14 was kicked from #debian by debhelper [use http://paste.debian.net or /msg dpkg paste]
00:36-!-muammar [~muammar@190.77.18.28] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:36<sney_>kicked or no, he's right. but you'll also need a Screen section if you want to manually specify resolutions.
00:37<sney_>You can put the sections in separate files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ - this is actually what's recommended by debian, though both approaches work
00:37<sney_>!tell jay__ about xorg.conf.d
00:37<jay__>i am downloading the intel driver and the library you said i need
00:38<sney_>I am going to bed. if you get stuck, it's probably wiser to ask in #debian-next than in here.
00:38<jay__>I should be able to find a guide on xorg.conf

09:25<janusian>I've recently reinstalled a fresh copy of debian squeeze and, after setting up LAMP again, everything was going well until today's boot up. For some reason Apache2 does not automatically start upon the system booting into Debian. Instead I have to type /etc/init.d/apache2 start (as root) to get it going.
09:25<janusian>I've experienced this issue in ubuntu too, recently, does anyone have an idea why this might be happening?
09:26<janusian>I have nothing too weird installed, just LAMP and a pretty fresh copy of Squeeze.

12:17<chrisreich>ChrisZeroUm - I haven't worked with thumb drive installations, but it seems to me you should be able to copy the individual DVD .iso files to your drive and then 'virtually' insert them as called for by aptitude. At least that's the way it would work under virtualization. Have you tried anything?

12:23<chrisreich>Of course, you will end up downloading EVERYTHING in the repositories, while no doubt needing a fraction of them. Practicality would dictate installing from just DVD-1 and getting everything else on-line from the repos. That however, would not advance you knowledge relating to your question.
12:23<chrisreich>Oh - you've already got all the DVDs so it's moot. Give it a shot.

16:02<Gators>rescue mode?

16:02<Gators>I'm thinking it did something stupid like setup a boot partition on a different drive than the one my computer is actually using. And, it's not like it asked me, it just assumed, and got it wrong it seems. So, once I boot the disc and select rescue mode, how do I sort this all out?
16:03<dvs>It depends what you mean by "won't dualboot"
16:04<Gators>Well, it boots the same way it booted before I ran the linux install.
16:04<Gators>right into windows 7

16:04<Gators>although, I get a screen that lets me choose windows 7 or older windows version, which the older windows version option is invalid as I haven't had that install in quite some time.
16:04<Gators>But, I've been lazy and haven't removed that option and set it to just automatically go into 7
16:05<Gators>But, anyways, whatever debian setup for dual boot, it's not doing that at all, it's just doing the same as it was before the install.

16:42<Gators>When I try to run grub-install /dev/sdc, it replies with /bin/sh: grub-install: not found
16:42<Gators>How do I get this thing to find the grub-install that I must run?
16:43<gsb>Gators: i think you need to chroot into your root partition
16:43<Gators>Ok, two questions about that.
16:43<Gators>1. What does that mean?
16:43<Gators>2. How do I do that?

16:44<gsb>Gators: you are sitting into rescue disk which normally have limited tools. if you enter into your installed linux then you will have access to grub-install.
16:44<gsb>Gators: chroot is used to change root drive.
16:45<Gators>Well, I've been trying to enter into my installed linux to have access to, well, my installed linux. So, you're telling me in order to access my installed linux, I have to run this grub installer, which I need to be in my installed linux to run....

16:46<gsb>Gators: your installed linux is right on a hard disk partition. you just need to enter into it
16:47<Gators>Well, there's the partition that windows 7 is on, and the linux created I think 2 partitions on there....and.....
16:47<Gators>I don't knwo what I'm doing.
16:48<gsb>Gators: did you created linux partitions yourself?
16:48<Gators>God, this happens every damn time I try to get into linux. I figure, I'll broaden my horizons, learn more about things I'm not familiar with, and get new skills. Then I found out, there's a reason most of the world uses windows.....because it's actually usable.

23:38<perlwizard>with what software can you connect to it properly ?
23:38<phillmac>the webdav is my website and the debian box is the vps

23:49<perlwizard>if you need simple file transfer between two linux boxes, the simpliest solution would probably be sshfs

23:50<phillmac>anyother alternatives u can surggest?
23:50<phillmac>ok
23:50<perlwizard>for sshfs you will need a running sshd on server and sshfs on client
23:51<perlwizard>there is also network file system (NFS)

23:59<perlwizard>this means your grub is not in mbr.
23:59<perlwizard>something went wrong during installation
23:59<Gators>then the grub installer doesn't install properly.
23:59<Gators>How do I fix this?
