I've tried /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart with no avail. And I'm also trying to get my X-Fi set up to maybe do emulated 5.1 for 2 channel audio. Any support is greatly appreciated :)

00:24<phillipsjk>I have been told by the maintainer of a floppy distro that extra modules don't make the base kernel larger. You can delete any you don't use to free up disk space. But it would only be worth it if every megabyte counts. TL;DR: NO.

00:59<user01>i thought i needed java
00:59<sney>icedtea/openjdk6 is better supported (security) but worse supported (applications) ... openjdk7 fixes this dissonance but is only in wheezy+
00:59<user01>mmm ok
00:59<user01>no jdk backport then
00:59<scientes_>well hopefully we will be releasing wheezy soon
01:00<scientes_>only 607 rc bugs to go!
01:01<phillipsjk>rizzle, have you looked into the Gnu/Hurd port? Not sure if it would be any smaller. With that kernel, everything is a module, AFAIK.
01:01<sney>does hurd actually, you know
01:01<sney>work?
01:01<scientes_>did someone just refer to Hurd as solving problems?
01:01<scientes_>lawl
01:01<user01>are they going to keep adding new versions of iceweasel to it, or is that frozen? :)
01:02<sney>user01: mozilla.debian.net keeps pace with mozilla.org fairly well, so new versions of iceweasel are always available, at least
01:02-!-aranax [~aranax@190.148.6.222] has joined #debian
01:03<user01>yeah and new versions of iceweasel seem to have slowed down lately
01:03<phillipsjk>I got the impression that the problem was kernel bloat :P
01:03<user01>i remember every other day a new version
01:03<user01>at one point
01:05<phillipsjk>hurd is an unoffcial port.

01:06<user01>ill see if i get in trouble with human resources monday . . . they had given me some web business ethics training module and i refused that required windows to run and i refused to take the module because it was unethical to make me run windows
01:07<Uranix>is that normal to have two instances of dhclient both lostening on eth0?

01:11<user01>the web was made for any computer to be able to access, not operating system specific computers
01:13<phillipsjk>user01 you are proably preaching to the choir, but maybe #debian-offtopic would be a better place to discuss that.
01:14<pparadis>user01: if you insist on sticking to your guns on the issue, you might suggest they provide you a windows machine to complete the training on. but yes, this should be discussed in -offtopic
01:15<user01>phillipsjk, yeah i was going to follow it up with a question if anyone had figured out away around that specific website but i forgot the name of it
01:15<user01>in debian
01:16<user01>ill go there and ask
01:16<phillipsjk>If it uses ActiveX, probably no.
01:17<user01>yeah it does
01:18<user01>i just wrote them back and told them they had more development work to do because they didnt support my OS yet, nor iceweasel 14.0.1

02:20<scientes_>rizzle, thats because the files must be owned as root, and it has to chroot in
02:20<scientes_>you can create a tarball using fakeroot, but only stage 1
02:22<rizzle>so if i chroot into that new system and update-grub, if i get rid of the original system , in theory the computer would boot to the new debootstrp install?
02:23<rizzle>i am hoping i understand this correctly. i thought that debootstrap could be used to build systems over a network connection as well

07:14<weasel>they aren't
07:14<weasel>obviously :)
07:14<weasel>you will need the 32 bit linker for 32 bit elf files.
07:15<weasel>which you apparently don't have, hence the 'no such file'

08:02<Visitor>Small question. When I want to utilize function from application x, without having to call 'exec', I usually find package x-dev, which contains headers for application 'x', then #include <> needed headers, mention x-dev in build-depends, x in depends, and it works fine. But, 'dpkg-dev' does not give headers of dpkg. Do I have to use 'exec'?
08:03<clad>Oh well I did install some not so compatible package cause I was too laxy too compile, but turns out after spending 40mn trying to make it run I just went on the git and voila, not even 5 minutes (most of which spent drinking coffee) got me a nicely working app.

17:29<hkb>I posted a problem a few days back about Debian//Wheezy not working on a SABERTOOTH//Nvidia550 combination. This is my finding but have no clue if it will work for others. The problem is the default video driver, nouveau driver. I found it easiest to get the network working (check interfaces file) with the default driver, fixing root password with the install disk, downloading the latest driver from nvidia, and installing using the second
17:29<hkb>grub boot option which is non-grahical. You will have to down load a number of additinal packages but just follow the requests as nvidia install complains. The compiler missmatch is not a problem, so select no and proceed. Hope this is helpful. Good luck.
17:30<sney_>hkb: debian provides packages for the nvidia driver, and using the installer from nvidia.com will cause you a headache next time Xorg is upgraded

17:32<sney_>!why nvidia installer sucks
17:32<dpkg>nvidia-installer works fine for you today, granted. Let's say tomorrow Xorg is updated -- the nvidia driver will break. If you try to uninstall nvidia (nvidia-installer --uninstall), then you break Xorg badly. nvidia-installer overwrites files at random, and has NO CONCEPT of package management. We recommend against using it based on extensive experience. USE THE DEBIAN PACKAGES. Ask me about <nvidia>.
17:32<sney_>hkb: wheezy+ has a package called 'nvidia-installer-cleanup' for this exact reason.

17:35<hkb>This is a test intstall... This is why I am here. However, I did bring this up a few days ago and I did not get any quality feedback. I was dead in the water and just pushed through it by brute force to get woking which confirmed the real boot problem.
17:36<hkb>Anyway ... I will redo the build from scrtach and try the deb packages ... I do prefer using deb packages when ever they work.

23:21<sney>luke: if you find a jumper somewhere, you may try setting that drive as the channel master, that might help
23:21<sney>some motherboards and cables don't play nice with cable select
23:22<luke>sney, it is in master possiton currently
23:22<luke>From what i can see from the website anywho.
23:23<luke>Ill just watch the movei on the other PC no biggie

23:24<pparadis>sney: just for reference, way back in the scrollback i'm pretty sure there was good evidence he was attempting to plug and unplug IDE/power cables to that drive earlier with the machine powered on. his explanation on using his other desktop for irc simultaenous didn't really work with the channel logs ;)

23:43<emss>if you are comparing strings make sure everything is "" "$opt" == "${options[0]}"
23:44<Gerowen>emss: I'm not certain, I thought variables were "un-typed" in bash, lemme see what it returns.
23:44<Gerowen>emss: That was the issue
23:45<pparadis>\o/
23:45<Gerowen>Adding quotes around both variables in the if statement fixed it, :-)
