00:54-!-Dusty is now known as DustyB
00:54<sney>hi
00:54<DustyB>Anyone around to help 'confirm' a suspicious issue I have :P Would appreciate a second opinion.
00:54<sney>!ask
00:54<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
00:55<DustyB>Oh okey!
00:56<WaqarAzeem>nice
00:56-!-tazz [~gaurav@triband-mum-120.60.159.190.mtnl.net.in] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:57<DustyB>I'm running debian wheezy (testing) with kernel 3.2.0-3-amd64. I have tried with a standard squeeze install (only recently upgraded to the later kernel for testing). I'm getting regular kernel panics /taint /RIP which appears to be when doing anything 'memory' intensive. I think it's a faulty module but would like a second opinion (as the server is not in a physically accessable location) lol
00:57<DustyB>I have a pastebin of the kern.log clip when the crashes occour.
00:58<sney>3.2.0-3 has a couple of oddball bugs but nothing causing predictable panics IIRC. the log would be nice
00:58<DustyB>I was using 2.6.32 previously.
00:58<DustyB>I only upgraded after days and days of troubleshooting.
00:59<DustyB>(The standard kernel in Squeeze - whichever version that was)
00:59<DustyB>I'm don't mean to pretend I know what I'm talking about by the way. I'm genuinely stumped.

01:01<sney>are you using any out-of-tree modules or 3rd party drivers?
01:01-!-juanca [~juanca@190.152.240.207] has joined #debian
01:02<DustyB>I am using VirtualBox-4.1 from the VirtualBox repositories (Not debian)
01:02<DustyB>But it is not related, as previously I was using VirtualBox-OSE from the debian repositories and had the same problem.
01:02-!-juanca [~juanca@190.152.240.207] has quit []
01:02<DustyB>Though I got a lot of kernel taint from the VirtualBox-OSE - which apparently is common with AMD64
01:03<sney>yeah, virtualbox's license is not clean, which is where that comes from
01:04<DustyB>Other than that, after I upgraded to kernel 3.2.0-3-amd64 - I installed a realtek network firmware from Debian (non free) sources. That's it.
01:04<DustyB>sney: I'm happy to remove VirtualBox and run it for a few days to rule out the modules loaded on it's behalf.
01:04<DustyB>sney: If you think it's worth a try.

01:06<sney>DustyB: yeah, pull the virtualbox modules and see if that helps, otherwise you're likely right about the memory issue. (in fact, if you have lights out access, maybe just install memtest86 from apt and run that for a while)
01:07<DustyB>I installed memtester, and gave that a workout and had no issues. Testsing was done sucessfully.
01:07<DustyB>It has 16 gig of ram so.

02:25<dpkg>amd64 is the Debian architecture optimized for x86-64, aka AMD64. Intel Core 2, Core i3/i5/i7 and Xeon (since 2004) systems are x86-64. The AMD64 architecture also supports running Debian i386 with either a -686 or -amd64 kernel. See also <why amd64> and <why not amd64>.

09:29<ev3nturer>I'm running Debian version squeeze (latest). When I try to use the webcam. I get the following output video works but not mic. I expected them to both work, as they work on xp.
09:29<babilen>Well, you might be able to get something running on top of the framebuffer, but why go through the hassle? (if that works at all)

09:38<ev3nturer>babilen, to your earlier question I configured the settings in skype, as at the begining it would not have video, but now it does, and i tried every audio setting, even though i have the usb audio selected it doesnt work
09:38<babilen>ev3nturer: You can do that in alsamixer - Please also note the difference between "dpkg -1 pulseaudio" and "dpkg -l pulseaudio" (i.e. l vs. 1) -- The letter you want is "el" not "one"

15:43<vook>I'm trying to enable netgroups for an nfs export. The intent is to enable two hosts rw access, while affording the other hosts only ro access. It seems that the two statements in /etc/exports are conflicting because all hosts are on the same subnet.
15:44<janusian>I'm trying to find out what the best practice is for setting up a development environment in Squeeze. I've got LAMP installed, but I haven't set a usergroup for my non-SU account to work on developing websites
15:44<vook>i.e. the ro statement overrides the rw statement for netgroup admin, individually they work fine.
15:44<janusian>is there a best practice method? and if so, are there any manuals/sites that I can consult to make sure I keep thins fairly secure?

15:45<sney_>janusian: most of the common CMS packages have a quick rundown of some good user/group practices that are appropriate for production
15:46<janusian>sney, thanks. Do you have any links that I might check? I tried a general google but "user group" and "permissions" just result in too wide a set of results.
15:46<sney_>I seem to remember drupal having sane recommendations
15:46<janusian>cool, I'll try hunting for them

16:42<cambal>anyone present here?
16:42<vook>!ask
16:42<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask!
16:43<cambal>after an unfinished kde install (full partition) i need to free space again
16:43<cambal>apt-get purge kde-full doesnt work, says its not installed,
16:43<cambal>however dpkg --get-selections gives me a whole list,
16:43<cambal>purge them all manually?
16:44<vook>yes, that would work
16:44<cambal>no quicker way?
16:44<vook>you can probably purge just a few of the core kde packages - such as libkde or libqt or whatever.
16:44<sney_>you can also use aptitude to remove/purge sets of packages, e.g. aptitude purge ~ikde would remove everything with kde in the name
16:44<vook>that will force most kde related packages to also be removed
16:45<cambal>ok, i'll try aptitude now
