06:07<dkarampin>yea, what has confused me is whether should I leave keywords like "squeeze" on source.list entries.
06:07<babilen>dkarampin: Please note that wheezy hasn't been released yet and that you *will* need to be familiar with Debian and its packaging system. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if you don't know how to upgrade from squeeze, but if you are willing to invest the time in reading/learning you will have fun. I recommend to read http://debian-handbook.info/ in its entirety (and chapter 5, 6 and 7 in particular).

11:23<dawid1>I'm running a Debian amd64. Just installed yesterday, first time in my life on linux. I thought it went pretty good (I have read a lot before I started). But here I am, coz I just cant do my wifi. As far I found I need iwlwifi 4965 -2 driver, and I found it. But not in repo. So I have just a files and no Idea how should I install them.
11:23<dawid1>Debian 6.0.5 as long as I remember
11:23*Maulkin guesses at:
11:23<Maulkin>!iwlwifi
11:23<dpkg>The iwlwifi Linux kernel driver supports Intel 3945 ABG, 4965 AGN and several Intel 802.11n adapters (WiFi Link, Wireless-N, Advanced-N, Ultimate-N). Firmware is required, ask me about <non-free sources> and install the firmware-iwlwifi package to provide. Supported devices are listed at http://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi . See also <iwlegacy>.
11:24<babilen>dawid1: Do you know how to open a terminal? If so please run "lspci -nn|grep -i network" and give me the output - Most likely you just have to install the firmware package, but lets take this step by step.
11:24<Maulkin>dawid1: So, it seems you need to install non-free sources (/msg dpkg non-free sources) and then install the firmware-iwlwifi package.

11:28<babilen>dawid1: yeah, you just need to install the firmware package for that. So enable non-free (essentially make sure that all "deb" and "deb-src" lines in /etc/apt/sources.list end in "main contrib non-free"), run "apt-get update" and install it with "apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi"
11:29<babilen>dawid1: You can then reload the module with "modprobe -r iwlagn ; modprobe iwlagn". Check that the firmware has been loaded in "dmesg | tail -n23" and you should be ready to use it.

11:33<babilen>dawid1: And just as a side-note. Hardware is typically supported in its entirety by the Linux kernel. That means that you don't need to install or upgrade drivers indepdently, but might mean that you need newer kernel versions. Your wireless adaptor should be well supported by Linux and your kernel (2.6.32), but it needs non-free firmware. As Debian doesn't want to force you to use non-free/binary only firmware you have to install that ...
11:34<babilen>... independently.
11:34<babilen>dawid1: See also "/msg dpkg firmware" and the linked articles.

11:35<jamesawagneriii>Okay, so for reasons unknown to me, port 53 is blocked in and out at the network I'm stuck on. OpenDNS supports listening on alternate ports (5353 being common), and be contacted quite easily on 5353 over ncat/nc/telnet/etc. As of yet though, I haven't found a way force debian to do DNS requests in and out of a port other than 53. I've tried iptables, with little success, and read through the manpage for dhclient. Suggestions would be appreciated.
11:37<dawid1>Ok. One sec coz I am still not sure what I am doing. I use Linux for maybe 6 hours. To enable all non-free I should put 'contrib non-free' in sources.list? is it? I just dont want to damage anything

11:38<babilen>dawid1: Ok. One step at a time. The repositories from which you can install packages are configured in /etc/apt/sources.list. You configure the mirrors and which parts of the archive you want to access. If you edit this file you should see a number of "deb" lines that end in "main" right now. Is that true? You can also paste the content of that file to http://paste.debian.net

11:40<babilen>dawid1: "main" is the main archive of Debian, but there are other parts such as "contrib" and "non-free" that contain packages that are non-free or depend on non-free software. In order to be able to install that you need to *explicitly* enable it. This is done by adding "contrib non-free" at the end of the "deb" and "deb-src" (for source code) lines.
11:41<babilen>dawid1: You activate changes made to /etc/apt/sources.list by running "apt-get update" (which will download the current package lists from the mirrors) -- You might also want to read http://debian-handbook.info/browse/stable/apt.html (and the rest of this wonderful book)

I also have to leave and would recommend to read some of the documentation linked in "/msg dpkg introduction", "/msg dpkg general cli tutorial" and the aforementioned Debian Handbook. 14:32<Starter>I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask - I just have a simple question. If I now install wheezy via the Beta1 installer and just keep updating my packages, will I have the same system as a fresh stable wheezy install once it is released? Also I guess I will be able to choose my own repositories (i.e. a near FTP server) when using the netinstaller? As you can see I'm fairly new to Debian...
14:32<Starter>...and Linux systems themselves, so once again I'm sorry if questions like these are inappropriate here.

18:16<ev3nturer>does it do images or videos
18:16<nevyn>nope

22:45<sardines>syney: i have 8 vm's and now im worried about trying to revert and lose all my machines
22:46<sney>well, #debian can't support oracle's proprietary installer so you'll have to go directly to them. they probably have a forum or something

23:14<cogdog>Was wondering when the the sources.list was "upgraded" to arch? Mine look like this now
23:14<cogdog>deb [arch=amd64,i386] http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ testing main

23:16<sney>cogdog: well, mine doesn't, so it must have been since Monday
23:16<cogdog>Nice move to have arch in there but I think it might have broke deb [arch=amd64,i386] http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main
23:17<cogdog>Yes I know that repo is evil. Its only on one machine.
23:18<cogdog>interesting. I only see it on my 64bit boxes.

23:20<cogdog>I mean the "deb [arch=amd64,i386]" part. Looks like Debian is really going to fuse amd64, i386 =D ... that is a first IIRC and damn cool.
23:21<sney>!multiarch
23:21<dpkg>Debian is working towards the ability to install packages from one architecture on a machine that is running a different architecture. This makes i386/amd64 issues simpler (no more ia32-libs!), helps tag firmware blobs with the correct arch and allows easier cross-compiling and bootstrapping. Multiarch support is a release goal for Debian 7.0 "Wheezy". http://www.debian.org/News/2011/20110726b http://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch
