05:50<perlwizard>mgsk you need to modify your file /etc/apt/sources.list as root to contain testing sources instead of stable sources
05:51<mgsk>perlwizard, noted.
05:51<themill>("wheezy" not "testing")
05:51<tale>mgsk: Either upgrade using the usual method in the upgrade manual, or install only gnome shell from testing. The latter is hard because most likely gnome shell needs new versions of run time libraries, too.

10:05<SynrG>Lantizia: no, you're using the web incorrectly
10:06<SynrG>what makes die.net's man page search authoritative for Debian?
10:07<SynrG>what, on that web page says which version of dhclient in which distribution that man page applies to?
10:07<Lantizia>SynrG, I'm only looking at that as the 'man dhclient' isn't complete
10:08<tale>Lantizia: Does debian dhclient have the option -timeout?
10:08<Lantizia>I'd like to find that out! or perhaps whatever equivalent it has instead
10:08<SynrG>look at the code, then? or at least upstream's site, not a third-party man page indexing site
10:09<SynrG>also, make sure whatever man page you find refers to the version in debian squeeze
10:09<tale>Lantizia: I would say dhclient --help is authoritative. And it does not show --timeout.
10:09<SynrG>it's possible a much older (or newer) version of dhclient has this option but squeeze's does not
10:09<nadir>man dhclient says timeout is set in /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf , that?
10:10<Lantizia>SynrG, right you just make as many excuses as you like and totally ignore the fact I already said I looked at what should be authoritive and complete which is 'man dhclient'
10:10<Lantizia>If I feel it might be incomplete there's little hard in googling for something to compare to
10:10<Lantizia>kill me now for doing so!
10:10<SynrG>excuses? i'm merely saying linux.die.net is not authoritative for debian squeeze
10:10<Lantizia>and I never said it was!
10:11<SynrG>why did you bring it up, then? it shouldn't figure into this discussion. now, if you had said "look, here in the code i found -timeout is a valid option and it's not in the man page or --help" then you'd maybe have a point
10:11<Lantizia>nadir, yeah I'm aware of that one - was hoping for a way of specifying a timeout temporarily without having to edit config files
10:12<SynrG>the fact that you've found in a different version of a man page for dhclient the appropriate option is not relevant to what you're trying to accomplish
10:12<tale>Lantizia: But reading the man page showed to you dhclient in debian does not have option -timeout.

15:37<inkmo>hi, is anyone available to answer a (possibly stupid) question?
15:37<tale>!tell inkmo about ask
15:40<inkmo>ah. well, I've always only had a CD-RW on this computer, and I installed a DVD-RW today. I can't get VLC to open a DVD, though the file manager sees it and its contents. I figure because I installed new hardware on an existing debian install, I need new modules and this involves doing something with udev or modprobe. am I right?
15:41<inkmo>dmesg | grep dvd shows me the dvd drive on sr0. so maybe it's working correctly, but I'm not sure if there is more I have to do.
15:41<tale>inkmo: Do you mean you can not open files on the DVD, or you can not play a protected DVD movie?
15:41-!-broucaries [~bastien@mna75-10-82-243-124-42.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #debian
15:43<inkmo>hmm. OH it might be an format thing. I didn't think about that. let me try a different DVD. I just grabbed store bought one off the shelf because I thought it was most likely to work.
15:43<tale>inkmo: If you can play CD music on that device, then it work OK. To see DVD movies, you have to install the library that decrypts them.
