02:48<pato83>Hi, after two days of research and trying to figure out what is the cause that none of my clients on two subnets can not ping each other or any address on internet, I am asking here. I use dnsmasq for dhcp based on mac adding hostname and ip address and dns builtin in dnsmasq. I have two subnets, one on wlan1 and one on eht0 and connecting through wlan0. On wlan1 clients get ip addresses from range 192.168.100.100 - 192.168.100.200 and on eth0 from 192.168.1

I've been looking at switching to Debian now that Ubuntu is going to start serving desktop ads from Amazon in the newer release... but I have a few questions about things I'm not familiar with about Debian. On the debian websites it suggests users use unstable for desktop, but then it says that unstable doesn't get security updates... is this safe?

12:46<babilen>w1res: Choosing which suites to track is complicated and can't really be broken down to a simple formula. In general you should use stable as you get a set of packages with that which have been tested and are known to work together and also get active security support.

12:52<babilen>w1res: Some Debian Members think that testing is merely a tool to ease us creating stable releases and argue that it shouldn't be used by users at all. Right now testing is frozen (/msg dpkg freeze) and the installer for wheezy (/msg dpkg wheezy) is being prepared so the situation is a bit different and you might actually want to try it.

12:58<w1res>Ok thanks
12:58<ompaul>w1res: be aware that all these things are security patched. There are back ports. Start your install and come bac.
12:59<w1res>I have another question: Since stable is tested with the packages available in the repo, does installing something from source or the latest binaries from the softwares website defeat the purpose of running stable?

13:00<ompaul>w1res: no, just a stupid waste of time
13:01<babilen>w1res: Ok. In that case I would recommend that you use stable and install iceweasel/icedove from backports (/msg dpkg backports) or http://mozilla.debian.net -- You can, however, always install other software from source. Just make sure that you install it to /usr/local so that it doesn't mess with software that is under the control of the package manager. A nice way to manage /usr/local is a tool called stow. You might want to read "/msg dpkg ...
