01:54<pv_>hello
01:55<pv_>i want to install kernel from backports but i dont know what package to ask for
01:55<ectospasm>pv_: look for one of the "linux-image" packages
01:55<pv_>i have 3770K cpu...
01:56<ectospasm>I don't know what that means.
01:56<pv_>my processor is intel 3770...
01:56<ectospasm>I assume it's EM64T compatible, then.
01:57<ectospasm>is your Debian install 32bit or 64bit?
01:57<pv_>64
01:57<ectospasm>then get the x86_64 build, maybe called linux-image-*-amd64
01:58<ectospasm>replace '*' with the image you want to install
01:58<ectospasm>see "aptitude search linux-image" for a list

01:59<pv_>it looks like i got the latest one of those showing up
01:59<jm_>judd kernels
01:59<judd>Available kernel versions are: experimental: 3.5-trunk-686-pae (3.5.2-1~experimental.1); sid: 3.2.0-4-686-pae (3.2.29-1); wheezy: 3.2.0-3-686-pae (3.2.23-1); squeeze-backports: 3.2.0-0.bpo.3-686-pae (3.2.23-1~bpo60+2); squeeze: 2.6.32-5-686 (2.6.32-45); lenny-backports: 2.6.32-bpo.5-686 (2.6.32-35~bpo50+1); lenny: 2.6.26-2-686 (2.6.26-29)
02:00<jm_>it would be better to get something like 3.5 for 3770 if you are planning on using its built-in graphics
02:01<pv_>ok. yes it would be nice to be able to use the built in graphics its all i got atm

02:05<pv_>alright, ill get that one
02:05<jm_>there are also updated X packages in bpo (those were actually useful for previous CPU generation, whether it helps with yours I don't know - my brother has 3470 and he'll switch to testing when he gets the remaining components)

14:20<sarc>Ok debian gurus, I have an interesting problem for you. I am trying to boot a debian live-build iso from a usb drive on a mac and getting errors such as "Found HC with no IRQ. Check BIOS/PCI" after the boot process has started. It eventually fails to a "Boot Failed" screen with a prompt that I am unable to type in. I am able to get a default Ubuntu iso to work, but it is ~700MB where-as I need
14:20<sarc>a very simple and customizable distro, which is why I went for the live-build.
14:21<sarc>For a more in-depth look at I posted the question on Stack Overflow.. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12586786/how-to-boot-a-usb-drive-in-both-bios-and-efi-based-systems-with-multiple-partiti
