21:07<TCW>xtoaster, in short, there are default "policies" that prevent a normal user from mounting / formating / changing in any way a interal harddrive
21:08<xtoaster>hm, so the owner of the FAT files are defined by these policies.
21:08<TCW>for the kernel itself (linux that is, on the outmost basic level) it is all the same, just the upper layers like your desktop environments and their tools like policykit make a difference there.

21:11<TCW>xtoaster, there is a policy-editor, or rather was (no idea if squeeze has it). But essentially you do need to edit one of those policies that a user is permitted to mount an internal drive. But that policy-framwark was / is in constant flux between the different distro releases over the years. That means finding the right file to edit in the right format may be a bit tricky. But then again, for internal drives, as they do not change that often anyway ;) don't

21:13<xtoaster>ok. so anyway to view/edit these policies, some command to suggest?
21:14<TCW>at least if the ntfs-permissions are actually used as on any sensible setup Windows system. Windows XP home for example doesn't use those access control lists (ACL in short) so every user may do everything.
21:14<TCW>xtoaster, is there a reason why you do not edit fstab?
21:15<TCW>xtoaster, as said, those policies are not menat to be edited, not realy
21:16<ARCADIVS>Hmm. Apparently I'm supposed to use insserv instead of update-rc.d.
21:16<xtoaster>ok. no reason. I did edit it , but looking simpler ways :).
21:16<TCW>and the syntax / format and location of those policy files did change and probably will change over the futere, whereas fstab will always be there at the same place with the exact same syntax / format (mor or less)

21:44<TCW>dragondon, "character device"
21:44<dragondon>ah, got it
21:44<TCW>there are some "special" files in the unix world
21:45<TCW>basically a block device behaves like any normal file. One feature of a block device you can jump to any block inside that file, on any position so to speek, that means they are "seekable"
21:45<dragondon>TCW, androind devices can also connect with the option of 'usb debugging' selected on them, sometimes that seems to change things. I wonder if that would change anything?
21:46<TCW>character devices on the other hand work differently. You just pipe data in such a file and read from it, no way of saying "get me to that position in that file"
21:46<dragondon>TCW, I see, will try to keep that in mind.

22:13<TCW>dragondon, either way, gnome3 (be it as the shell, the new ui concept or the classic fallback mode) is a shock for a majar part of the former gnome2 users
22:14<TCW>the shell is one thing, as it may not be as bad as one thinks. But users tend to get used to something, and they may react unkind if they are somewhat forced to deal with a completely new concept.

So basically if you do not bother setting up OpenGL drivers or if the gfx chip you use just cant give any sensible 3D performance / features, you will be dropped to the fallback mode. SOme may chose Xfce (a completely different desktop environment, but very similar to the old gnome2 approach), KDE (bloated, buggy as hell over a long period of time, very "colorful", tries to be as fancy as it can get, full of bells and whistls, did I mention its bloatness yet?), mate (a gnome2 fork, so you get exacty what you had with gnome2, I use that btw. *g*),
