13:19<Toto>Hey guys!
13:19<Toto>quick question - which one is better for an old machine - xubuntu or linux mint?
13:19<dondelelcaro>this is #debian, so Debian.

13:25<Toto>Is ubuntu software compatible with debian?
13:25<retrospectacus>usually no
13:26<orangensaft8>uhm, wait, what? when i download software, many times it even says "ubuntu / debian" as download link.
13:27<retrospectacus>in that case yes
13:27<orangensaft8>like, that has been my impression as casual debian user
13:27-!-ring1 [~ring0@dslb-084-059-048-036.pools.arcor-ip.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
13:27<retrospectacus>but "ubuntu software" is not usually compatible to debian
13:27<orangensaft8>i'll trust your expert opinion on this then.
13:27<retrospectacus>anyways debian has much more software available so it's not something to worry about
13:28<Toto>but regarding the "old hardware" issue, is debian really the best choice? I'm a noob. Will I be able to run programs like LibreOffice and Chrome on Debian?
13:29-!-werner291 [~werner@ip-80-236-212-180.dsl.scarlet.be] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
13:29<retrospectacus>it will mostly depend on the desktop env. you choose. xfce or so is best for "old hardware"
13:30-!-fisted [~fisted@xdsl-87-78-81-236.netcologne.de] has joined #debian
13:30<retrospectacus>LO might be slow, chromium is usually fine, it mostly depends on the design decisions of the developers of the sites you visit :P
13:30<retrospectacus>you should just try it
13:31<Toto>Too bad I only have 1 usb stick cause I want to try all these systems :)

18:33<Stereo>how can I recover my data from the disks that made the raid5 array?
18:33<Stereo>I tried googling for various things, but all that covers is when you have a disk that's gone bad
18:34<plugwash>I think the following will work but ymmv
18:34<plugwash>1: image the disks with dd
18:34<plugwash>2: create loopback devices based on the images using losetup
18:34<plugwash>3: use mdadmin to reassemble the array from the loopback devices
18:34<plugwash>*mdadm
18:36<plugwash>note: afaict the version of losetup in debian doesn't support partitioned loop devices so if your array was built out of partitions rather than directly out of drives you probablly want to make partition images rather than drive images
18:36<Stereo>actually, googling for mdadm losetup finds exactly that
18:36<Stereo>thank you plugwash

21:10<fixer>I figured out a solution to the Ath9k DMA failure issues
21:11<fixer>basically, ath94xx series card are a completely new design and has some new "green" power saving feature thats what is causing the DMA issue
21:11<fixer>I swapped it out with Atheros 9250 and I havent had any issues
21:11<fixer>easy solution for me since I just happend to have a half height minipcix ath9250 laying around
21:12<fixer>anyone else is pretty much just screwed tho, if they have ath94xx series atheros chipset
21:12<fixer>ath9250 can be purchased for around 20 bucks online
