00:31<cgraf>well then reboot
00:31<Ablac>We did
00:31<cgraf>ssh will start back up
00:31<Ablac>nope
00:31<Ablac>The host already gave up
00:31<cgraf>ok well then its not installed properly
00:31<Ablac>and told us were screwed...
00:31<Ablac>The host said its stuck in a Script thats locking the console
00:32<Ablac>And that script happens to be... a MC server :/
00:32<birch>i think his situation is this: He has a hosted server somewhere with a debian install with malfunctioning ssh. All he has access to is the host's cpanel. If he can't get ssh back on for the debian install then he has to reinstall, in which case he will ditch debian for centos because they have a stiff deadline with a huge cost for missing it.
00:33<Ablac>Nice Summary
00:33<cgraf>ok, he should use what works for him
00:33<Ablac>Our old dedicated used CentOS
00:33<cgraf>ditch debian if you have to, yuo are a pain. and arent doing any research
00:33<Ablac>...
00:33<cgraf>google uses debian. but if centos is what works for you. i thkn you should use it
00:34<Ablac>I would love to use Debian
00:34<Ablac>but were kinda stuck
00:34<cgraf>you should. its easy
00:34<shweppsie>Did you add your minecraft server to rc.local?
00:34<cgraf>just reinstall it. it only takes 15 minutes
00:34<Ablac>Its not the reinstall im worried about
00:34<cgraf>and ssh works out of box on debian perfectly
00:34<Ablac>its the 40 GB of the 200GB transfer we've already done :/
00:35<nomprover>Shouldn't we first ask him what the other options in the control panel do, such as the 'Recovery' option he mentioned?
00:35<birch>cgraf, i don't really know if your belligerent attitude is helpful to the debian community if you're going to actively drive away a user.
00:35<Ablac>The Recovery im currently in
00:35<cgraf>you ever think that maybe yuo cant ssh in because of the transfer
00:35<Ablac>It basicly setups a Remote Console
00:35<Ablac>But
00:35<Ablac>as i found it...
00:35<Ablac>its not actually connected to my server ;/
00:35<Ablac>None of the files are there and when i booted SSH it didnt work
00:36<birch>define not work
00:36<Ablac>In the console it says the service started
00:36<Ablac>but
00:36<Ablac>when i try to login to the SSH on my PC
00:36<Ablac>It says otherwise
00:36<birch>define otherwise

00:37<birch>we need specifics

00:38<Ablac>but running ifconfig shows my server
00:38<Ablac>yep
00:39<nomprover>Check sshd logs to see if connection attempts are getting through?
00:39<birch>have you tried narrowing down the issue by: checking permission settings, ownership settings, etc
00:39<Ablac>The current issue
00:39<Ablac>is the minecraft server which is located /home/test/craftbukkit.jar
00:39<Ablac>is running at start
00:39<Ablac>and blocking the console
00:40<shweppsie>did you add it to rc.local?

02:33<retrospectacus>your choice. If you do switch to wheezy see #debian-next for support
02:33<nomprover_>In my opinion, it's not as bad as it sounds. When I first started with debian, the fact that software in stable was _very_ old annoyed me.
02:33<bones_was_here>well i would suggest putting 'wheezy' in your sources.list instead of 'testing', when wheezy becomes stable your system will be upgraded to stable as you'd expect
02:33<bones_was_here>but if you use 'testing', then when wheezy becomes stable your system will be upgraded to the new 'testing', which will effectively be 'unstable' at that point
02:33*retrospectacus goes to bed

02:34<Eremiell>Java is still the same lazy beast nevermind which one you got (runing MC server myself). Since some time ago, I'm actually running wheezy on most of my machines and from my experience, doing a plain update/dist-upgrade from squeeze usually doesn't work so well. Always ended up reinstalling anyway, so I do that as standard procedure since. Don't froget to add squeeze repositories as well, as you'll easily find out, wheezy ones

02:46<Ablac>Whats Free WHCP
02:46<Ablac>!tell ablac about Free whcp
02:46-!-mode/#debian [+l 481] by debhelper
02:46<dennisthetiger>Eremiell: not seeing it in the repos. Backports or stable-> testing for the win?
02:47<Eremiell>As I said before, aside from several "have to be stable for any price" machines, I generally run testing. That one gets 3.x.
02:47<dennisthetiger>Ablac: One note, too, is that you can interact with dpkg without using the !tell command here in channel. In short, if you have something to search on dpkg, you can just type (for this case) 'free whcp' as a message to the bot.
02:48<dennisthetiger>Eremiell: Noted, that. I'll have to do an update in my Copius Free Time(TM) then. =D Thanks for the pointer.
02:48<Ablac>dennisthetiger is Webmin better now? with the 1.6.0.0 release?

14:36<SynrG>touki: there's a reason we have different releases of debian and don't merely continuously upgrade the bleeding edge or have a shorter release cycle ... from one release to the next there are many large and sometimes quite messy migrations from older versions to newer. imagine if we kept all the old stuff around when we did that ... we'd have an explosion of different versions of packages in debian, all maintained in parallel on the same ...
14:37<SynrG>... system, and we'd never release (because we'd never fix all the bugs!)
14:38<sney>and people who treat the 3 different branches as a "version buffet" regret it in 99% of cases
14:38<SynrG>touki: the upshot of that is, for very large migrations (like python) there is no practical way to keep the old and provide the new on the same system at once. the release managers and python maintainers work together to make the next version of python work and all the packages that depend on it work by the time the next stable release is released. that work-in-progress is wheezy. backports from that to squeeze are wholly impractical.
14:39<SynrG>in some cases where the dependency trees are shallow and/or substitutions of one version for another are possible, backports are possible. that's why you don't see backports for every possible piece of software at backports.d.o.

17:55<Agares>I have a question: some time ago I used ubuntu, and now I want to install linux again on my pc. I've read some stuff about ubuntu (like bad stability, for example), and I wanted to try debian (since I read that it offers all ubuntu features since it is debian based and it's good if someone wants to explore linux world in a better way). If I should follow, for example, a linux course based on
17:55<Agares>ubuntu, would I be able to do everything with debian too (I mean if they have the same terminal commands, procedures ecc. of course I would be to since debian is like a "father" xD) ?

19:32<dondelelcaro>vidiot: that doesn't make much sense; gcc and g++ are fully capable of producing i386 binaries on amd64. You don't need the 32bit version of them
19:32<retrospectacus>vidiot: what are you trying to do...
19:32<retrospectacus>compiling things is almost never necessary
19:33<vidiot>I'm using BlitzMAX and was trying to get all the dependancies worked out.. Works great on 32bit but could not get it working on 64bit
