00:24<Scriptonaut>Hey guys, I'm trying to make a basic file server. While installing it asks me if I want to install File server components and SSH server components. What does the SSH server component refer to? I'd like to be able to ssh into my server from abroad, however is an ssh server something completely different?
00:25<sney>ssh server is the openssh-server package
00:25-!-Aprel [~cp@n128-227-164-210.xlate.ufl.edu] has quit [Quit: leaving]
00:26<sney>the file server task is samba (aka windows file sharing)
00:26<sney>and nfs, actually
00:27<sney>Scriptonaut, ^
00:30<Scriptonaut>Well, I want to make a file server, and I want to be able to access files from all types of OS's(unix or not)
00:30<Scriptonaut>so samba seems like the best choice
00:30<Scriptonaut>however, what would the openssh-server package grant me?
00:30-!-se7en1 [~se7en@node-16x5.pool-118-173.dynamic.totbb.net] has joined #debian

00:35<Scriptonaut>So if I want to be able to ssh into my samba server, I should check ssh server?
00:35<simonlnu>yes

00:36<ranix>sorry to re-ask for anyone who might be in both, but freenode is a little sparse right now. I just hosed a raid 0 by rerunning mdadm --create on it. Now when I mdadm --assemble, I get the blank volume. Can I salvage this situation?

01:28<Scriptonaut>Do you guys know why visudo wouldn't be included by default on a new installation?
01:28<sney>it's only included if you also have sudo installed
01:29<sney>it's also in /usr/sbin, so it's not in a regular user's path by default
01:30<Scriptonaut>I'm root and I still can't call it. I must be because I haven't installed sudo, thanks
01:31<sney>this isn't ubuntu so sudo only gets installed if you ask for it
01:32<Scriptonaut>Alright, new question. I want to install the most recent stable kernels and headers
01:32<Scriptonaut>do I need backports for that?
01:33-!-jb_gpk [~jb_gpk@177.16.134.104] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:33<sney>that really depends on what you mean by 'stable'
01:33-!-quentusrex [~quentusre@70-89-155-57-amigo-vino-wa.hfc.comcastbusiness.net] has joined #debian
01:33<sney>if you mean what debian has determined to be stable, then you've already got it if you have squeeze installed and updated normally
01:33<Scriptonaut>Hmm
01:34<sney>if you mean you want 3.2 for some reason, then yes, you need backports. and if you want higher than 3.2, then you probably don't have a good reason for it, but you'd generally need to build the package yourself
01:34<Scriptonaut>Would I be living in the past to keep the current kernel? My primary purpose will just be a home media/file server
01:34<sney>it will work just fine
01:34<sney>2.6.32 is not ancient, it's from 2011
01:34-!-drdanz [~quassel@drdanz.it] has joined #debian
01:34<Scriptonaut>Oh, well I'll keep it then. How do I change the boring white font to the nice color coordinated font from 3.2?
01:36<sney>console fonts are controlled with dpkg-reconfigure console-data but I'm not sure what you mean by color coordinated
01:36<sney>sorry, dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
01:36<Scriptonaut>I've only upgraded to 3.2 once, and when I did the font became smaller and more readable, and also gained a lot of collor
01:36<Scriptonaut>color*
01:36-!-aranax [~aranax@190.148.55.86] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:37<sney>it probably just switched to the fixed font instead of terminus. that's usually what I do too
01:37<sney>colour is set in other places
01:38<Scriptonaut>Oh alright. I'll try the dpkg-reconfigure console-setup, thanks

04:52<SynrG>System Settings > Universal Access > Typing > Sticky Keys
04:53<SynrG>works for me
04:54<sirjohndfox>ahh the feature i'm looking for is having the modifier lock after two presses and then to release when it is pressed a third time....
04:54<SynrG>ok. it seems to lock after a single press

17:32<pagan0ne>well, its the way the distro is setup, it encrypts the /home/<user>/ folder using encryptfs i believe, and i like it that way because it means all my cache and such is encrypted

17:33<pagan0ne>which i understand will not be encrypted, and im fine with that

17:36<pagan0ne>i'm open to suggestions on mount point locations, but for some reason like /tmp/ for this and i dont know why, if you have a better suggestion (more "correct") then im open to suggestions

23:08<Scriptonaut>Hey, do any of you guys have decent knowledge on console fonts and color? This is for a non-graphical installation, just the console. I noticed when I upgraded from 2.6 to 3.2 the font size got much smaller and readable, it also became colored, for example directories are dark blue, images are teal, zip files are green, some files that I don't know(tmp in root) have a green background with
23:08<Scriptonaut>black text. I was considering just staying with 2.6 on a different machine, however I can't stand the original text styling, I like the clear colored font because it's much more readable and meaningful. I tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup, however I couldn't figure it out, it changes very slightly between different settings, but nothing like the 3.2 font
23:09-!-clakes [~clakes@host251-22-dynamic.58-82-r.retail.telecomitalia.it] has joined #debian
23:09<sney>the appearance of colour is just a ls option
23:09<sney>and/or some shell changes
23:09<sney>nothing to do with the kernel, at least not directly
23:09<sney>the font is, as I mentioned yesterday, configured with dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
23:09<Scriptonaut>hmm, what about the smaller font-size, and clearer font?
23:09<Scriptonaut>Have any of you guys noticed the changes with the upgrade?
23:10<Scriptonaut>its very drastic
23:10<sney>I always change my console font to fixed so it stayed that way for me

23:14<sney>so what happened is whenever you did that kernel upgrade, your bash alias for ls was changed too.
23:14<phorce1>and you can create your own aliases like my "apdate" that runs aptitude update ; aptitude safe-upgrade
23:14<phorce1>look in your ~/.bashrc
23:14<Scriptonaut>Oh alright, thanks for the help. Still no idea about the small font? I seem to be limited to Fixed, Terminus, TerminusBold, TerminusBoldVGA, and VGA
23:15<Scriptonaut>alright I will. So how do I form an alias?
23:15<Scriptonaut>is that similar to a link?
23:15<Scriptonaut>also, when I change font, is there an easier way than rebooting to see a change?
23:15<phorce1>Scriptonaut: there should be some defaults in your ~/.bashrc to show you how
23:15<Scriptonaut>ok thanks a lot
23:16<phorce1>Scriptonaut: (for aliases, I don't mess with my fonts)
23:16<phorce1>Scriptonaut: actually, I run xterms 99% of the time so X takes care of the fonts
23:17<Eremiell>not at all. I usually look down the appdb, find out if it runs out of the box, or if I need to install a library or two and that's it. this is totally abnormal from my usual experience.
23:17<sney>I still think the "much smaller and more readable" font was probably fixed anyway

23:58<Scriptonaut>Hey guys, another question, this time about resolution. I got the colors I want, however how do I get a nice higher resolution? I changed vga to 775, and the text is still huge and blocky
23:58<Scriptonaut>how do I at least make the text smaller
