00:20<dannn>Is there anyone that could quickly provide me assitance in selecting the proper files to download from the webiste to create a bootable USB drive of the latest Debian release?
00:21<dannn>or direct me to the proper channel to use to ask a question like that? i cant find any kind of 'helpfull' channels in the list

00:26<rudi_s>dannn: Any CD should work, e.g. netinstall CD. Just dd it on the USB stick (will destroy all data).
00:26<rudi_s>#debian on Freenode is the most active Debian channel.

00:27<dannn>yes i think i poked around a little more and found one (form the bittorrent section). why is there so many different options of the same verision? i think i was overwhelmed by all the choices
00:28<dannn>http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.6/i386/bt-cd/
00:28<dannn>what is the signifigace of listing the same release so many times?

00:28<rudi_s>dannn: Different CDs with different sizes, e.g. netinstall which contains only the most relevant data.
00:28-!-eltroi [~eltroi@41.140.184.157] has quit []
00:28<dannn>so if i grabbed the first one in the list of that website, is that a bad choice?
00:28<rudi_s>dannn: Different CDs, Debian is so big it doesn't fit on one CD, it needs many.
00:29<rudi_s>IIRC the first is fine.
00:29<rudi_s>But if you have an internet connection the netinst is the best choice for most users.
00:29<rudi_s>E.g. debian-6.0.6-i386-kde-CD-1.iso.torrent
00:29<dannn>ok thank you i will cancel the torrent and take that one instead
00:29<rudi_s>Wait, wrong one.
00:29<rudi_s>I meant this one: debian-6.0.6-i386-netinst.iso.torrent
00:30<dannn>thank you very much
00:30<rudi_s>But only works on machines with internet connection.
00:30<dannn>yes should be ok. hopefully its just what im looking for!

04:08<Super-Nathan>i would say that a c compiler like gcc should be a core util
04:08<Super-Nathan>therefor glibc should be installed by default
04:09<nome>ok so what glib will be in wheeze? as stable os?
04:09<Super-Nathan>if not "sudo aptitude install build-essential" would install everything needed to build from source and by extension a c compilier

04:12<Super-Nathan>if you need the latest c compiler the easiest ( and a kinda hacky solution ) is to change your sources from stable to sid. Just go to /etc/apt/sources.list and change all wheezy or stable refrences to the word "sid". then "sudo apt-get update" DO NOT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD UPDATE! Then "sudo aptitude install glibc" that will get you the freshest of the fresh. after the install change your sources back to wheezy/stable

04:14<simonlnu>i wouldn't do that

04:17<simonlnu>yeh, and we don't advise this in here, because of the problems it causes
04:17<simonlnu>i know
04:18<simonlnu>not implying you're trying to break it, just that mixing releases like that in inadvisable

04:22<Super-Nathan>you ARE usng stable
04:22<Super-Nathan>if you change your sources back after and update again then you have stable with ONE sid package
04:23<Super-Nathan>and yes then that is not a PURE stable system
04:23<simonlnu>um, that one sid package makes not stable anymore. think about it. it's libc6. how many packages depend directly on it? and in turn indirectly?
04:23<simonlnu>no, it is not

08:18<basic6>towo: i didn't see that timeout there before. so it's possible that the host system's zfs storage failed to provide data in time. it was probably slow because i'm running at least 3 virtual machines at a time and i'm not using zfs cache. right?

08:20<basic6>the point is that the storage was slow. while this is not really good, it's still ok for me (i can add a cache to imrpove performance), because nothing went really wrong, it just took longer to finish and the debian vm gave up too early.

08:54<basic6>as i wrote earlier, a virtual debian system booted with its root partition remounted readonly, because it ran into a timeout according to dmesg. i'm assuming this was because the underlying zfs storage pool was very slow at that time (>3 virtual machines runing). could this also have corrupted this debian's virtual hdd? it won't boot anymore, fsck says: inodes part of a corrupted orphan linked list found

17:18<birch>abrotman, EmleyMoor that last restart did the trick. i don't think grub updated on the first try. the brightness change works now but it's a very delayed response. no matter, just as long the screen doesn't drain my battery anymore

17:49<babilen>birch: ntp is a service that sets your system time automatically to a correct value by synchronising with a number of online time servers. You will therefore have the *exact* time on your computer and it doesn't "drift" as your internal clock is probably less accurate than those clocks the time servers synchronise with.

17:53<birch>babilen, the way i understood the situation is that: Setting the time to Local Time does not account for daylight savings, but setting to UTC does. If I want to account for daylight savings I can either set to UTC or install ntp which will account for daylight savings by synchronizing with the online time servers. Are the actions of setting to UTC and installing ntp interchangeable purely for accounting for daylight savings?

17:54<babilen>birch: No, that is wrong. Daylight savings has *nothing* to do with to what you set your system's time. If you run UTC it will merely change the value by which the "base time" is adjusted. If you run it on localtime it will actually change the localtime. (by ...
