00:00<tpo>Now, I'm at the point of the installation where I'm asked what software selections it should install... should I install sql database, dns server, file server or mail server?? I have very vague ideas of what all that means
00:00<tpo>fix: mine is an acer aspire e1-421
00:00<babilen>tpo: If you are not asked it you can always enable them later. You need those two in order to be able to install packages from non-free (such as firmware)
00:01<tpo>babilen: yeah, I remember editing sources.list with that kind of stuff :)
00:01<fix>Acer Aspire 5733
00:01<fix>core i3
00:01<fix>6gb ram
00:01<babilen>tpo: You will, most likely, not need to install them now. You can *always* install more software later. I would reocmmend to install the standard and desktop task. If this is a laptop you want the laptop task too. Everyhting else is better handled later.
00:02<tpo>babilen: thanks

00:02<babilen>tpo: yeah, exactly. just add a "contrib non-free" at the end of deb/deb-src lines in /etc/apt/sources.list (see also "/msg dpkg contrib" and "/msg dpkg non-free sources")
00:02<fix>wouldnt it be easier to simply supply him with a source.list file
00:03<themill>fix: not really. What would you put in it?

00:05<tpo>so babilen: what's this /msg thing you're doing? I see a dpkg tab with messages from you in it... I'm sorry, I've never really used irc before
00:07<LtL>tpo: they are factoids from dpkg the bot, read them.
00:07<tpo>I have LtL, I just don't know how babilen did that
00:08<babilen>tpo: "/msg dpkg foo" sends a private message to our bot (dpkg) asking it to tell you more about "foo" -- Our factoids also contain references to other factoids such as "See <dpkgbot> for further information" -- That essentially means that you can either "/msg dpkg dpkgbot" or mention "dpkgbot" in the message with dpkg to learn more about that.

00:10<babilen>tpo: It is the "tell USER about FOO" -- See "/msg dpkg dpkgbot" ;)
00:10<tpo>LtL I shall be careful in my proceedings
00:10<tpo>babilen: so I just type "/msg x y" in the message bar or how does it work?
00:11<LtL>tpo: i'm not one of them though, but 'tis true
00:11<tpo>LtL well I'm just a fellow mortal ;)
00:11<LtL>tpo: dpkg is a bot, a very capable one, /msg dpkg keyword is the trick

00:19<LtL>tpo: downgrading packages isn't wise, you tend to break things. kernels are generally the same, no need to downgrade them.
00:20<tpo>LtL what I meant is: if I install a latter version of the kernel can I also install latter versions of packages from the repositories? I was having some trouble with the texmaker version of the squeeze repos and I needed to upgrade that package; in the end I downloaded a .deb and installed it without much trouble...
00:22<dondelelcaro>that's annoying
00:22<LtL>tpo: using older kernels is a rare thing, but there may be exceptions, but some packages rely on the current kernel.

12:09<tester>any suggestions?
12:09<pranith>hi, I am trying to ssh from debian testing to a machine running ubuntu, it just hangs after logging in. I narrowed this down to the environment variable settings in my bashrc. After trial and error, when I remove one particular line in bashrc it logs in. But again when I do a 'ls' it hangs on output
12:10<pranith>any help is really appreciated!

20:37<dragondon>greetings all! got the ""OAFIID:GNOME_MultiLoadApplet"" error message, saw two different suggestions.
20:37<dragondon>This: "rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity"
20:38<dragondon>and this "sudo apt-get install -f libgnomekbd-common libgnomekbd2 libgnomekbdui2
20:38<dragondon>sudo apt-get install gedit gnome-applets-data gnome-applets gnome-app-install"
20:39<dragondon>the second seems kinda weird sa it's just installing some things that are already installed. I'm kinda leaning towards the first.
20:39<wompa>dragondon, you got the message when you logged into Gnome?

20:52<dragondon>how to check?
20:52<wompa>ok
20:55<wompa>by default I think you should have desktop switcher, sound volume, clock, window picker, simple menu, notification area, show desktop
20:58<dragondon>not quite. I got sound, clock, simple menu(by that I guess you mean Applications/Places/System), notification area. I did remove show desktop/window picker quite a while back, but essentially the same

23:19<Ablac>UGH :/ I dun want to reinstall Debian and lost 3 years of work over this… is there anyone there that can help me with getting SSH to boot?
23:19<juggernat>???
23:20<themill>Ablac: your last paste seemed to show that the ssh init script was missing lsb headers too.
23:20<Ablac>Hey :)
23:20<themill>(I also somehow doubt that you'd lose 3 years work on a fresh install...)
23:20<Ablac>Ya and when i tried to add it i got an error let me send you the paste of that.
23:20<Ablac>Our maps for MC are 3 years old
23:20<Ablac>and there backed up by Raid 1
23:21<juggernat>I'm sorry, what is SSH?
23:21<Ablac>http://pastie.org/5369866
23:24<Ablac>!ssh
23:24<dpkg>[ssh] the Secure SHell; "aptitude install ssh" (<openssh>). Clients for other platforms include <putty> and <cygwin>. Firewalls to mitigate against brute-force attacks on your SSH server include <fail2ban> and <denyhosts>. See also <scp>, <sftp>, <ssh without password>, <ssh permissions>, <sshx>, <ssh linedraw>, <debug sshd>, <dropbear>, <ssh-copy-id>, <ssh verify key>.
23:25<themill>Ablac: have you sorted out a serial console or remote console on that machine yet?
23:25<Ablac>I'm still in Recovery
23:25<Ablac>but its mounted to my machine
23:25<Ablac>Rescue*
23:25<Ablac>So i am able to run commands on the box.
23:26<Ablac>I removed all the Scripts A_ and uninstalled webmin
23:26<Ablac>and when i rebooted it still didn't boot ssh properly
23:26<themill>yeah, but without the ability to see the output from the boot, it's pretty hard to guess why

23:27<Ablac>Hmm.
23:27<Ablac>Ya and the VNC doesn't support Debian… let me contact Hetzner and see if they can get me a remote terminal.
23:27<themill>What does "ls -l /etc/rc2.d /etc/rcS.d" show now? And what's in the files /etc/init.d/ssh /etc/default/ssh and /etc/inittab
23:28<Ablac>http://pastie.org/5369891
23:28<se7en>themill: you could use rcconf to check if ssh is enabled at startup
23:28<LtL>se7en: rcconf is silly
23:29<se7en>ok LtL
23:29<juggernat>sou iniciante no Linux
23:29<themill>se7en: It's not just ssh that I'm interested in though. Ablac had other things earlier in the init sequence that weren't daemonising properly
23:29<juggernat>estou usando o Umbuntu
23:29<juggernat>é muito bom
23:29<themill>!ubuntu-br juggernat
23:29<dpkg>juggernat: Este canal e para suportar o Debian em Ingles. Por favor, /server chat.freenode.net depois /join #ubuntu-br.
23:31<LtL>se7en: rcconf is just a weak frontend but it can work
23:31<Ablac>Is there a way to set Priority of what boots first in the boot sequence?
23:31<se7en>LtL: it did always work here for a quick check
23:32<themill>Ablac: yes, those are the lsb headers that you had to edit for your own init scripts. The init scripts debian gives you already have them correct
23:32*themill wonders why there are sendmail, postfix and exim init scripts there
23:32<Ablac>We run our website on the dedicated
