01:46<doubledutch>eagles051387: Mine was wm specific - touched a file in .i3/config and it was beautiful.
01:46<eagles051387>humm i need this to test if i need a new monitor

01:47<doubledutch>About 10 minutes after a netinstall off minimal .iso and dist-upgrade or whatever to my version.
01:48<DennisTheTiger>eagles051387: Gnome works straight out of the box. XFCE and LXFE don't seem to have suitable capabilities from what I can tell. I, for one, have not tested KDE.
01:48<eagles051387>DennisTheTiger: I'm on kde
01:48<doubledutch>Still with nv before i got http://lmgtfy.com/?q=nvidia+the+debian+way and without even doing "Desktop Environment" packages options in the sinall.
01:48<doubledutch>s/sinall/install
01:48<eagles051387>bah
01:49<eagles051387>the issue is either th emonitor or cable
01:49<DennisTheTiger>eagles051387: That should at least give you a starter.
01:49<eagles051387>it works out of the box for me though DennisTheTiger
01:49<DennisTheTiger>eagles051387: Cool. =D
01:49<themill>eagles051387: KDE can do multiple monitors quite happily -- twiddle the config in system settings
01:49<doubledutch>On a Zotac 8400GS nVidia GeFOrce and nv on X.i3 it worked out of the box-ish
01:50<doubledutch>Yeah, I'd expect KDE has a GUI for it even in X Settings
01:50<DennisTheTiger>In any case, you may have to do the usual minor configuration - find the appropriate tool and tell it that a desktop spans n monitors.
01:50<eagles051387>themill: didn't have to

01:50<eagles051387>turns out i have a bigger problem then just getting that to work
01:50<DennisTheTiger>Or what themill said.
01:50<eagles051387>i have an issue with the monitor
01:50<themill>eagles051387: perhaps start again...
01:50<DennisTheTiger>eagles051387: Yeah, no software can fix a hardware problem, unlike what some users seem to think.
01:51<doubledutch>eagles051387: If it's a CRT that needs to be degaussed and you're in my zipcode I'll do it for free - I love the rush and the feeling that I'm going to die when the tube pops.

02:18<dpkg>Suspend can mean either suspend to disk (hibernate) or suspend to RAM. The in-kernel suspend system has worked well since Debian 4.0 "Etch". Installing the pm-utils or hibernate packages along with a front-end like gnome-power-manager or <power devil> should be enough. 08:42<mczhb>MrFrood: filemanager/protocol, yes. im tired of moving files via mv while connected over ssh. A simply solution/interface would be great. But i dont want data to be downloaded and uploaded to another directory/share; all commands should be executed on the remote host.

08:45<haylo_>there are GUI prgrams for ssh connections. like gftp , and i think emacs probably can handle all of that as well. And some people use things like Codeblocks or some other IDE to manage everything. so there are alot of solutions outside of mb, or a file manager

11:28<chomwitt>sney: apt-get in a dist-upgrade will upgrade X . as i see it if upgrade changes just some hdd files then the running X wont have issues unless X has only some pages only in RAM and some of its code will have to be fetched later.
11:29<daemonkeeper>chomwitt: That's not the point. X is a complex set of programs and libs dependending on each other in a way or another. The less stuff you rely on while upgrading, the better.

11:31<sney>and since a new stable release also includes a new kernel, you need to reboot anyway, so it's not like the system could stay up post-upgrade

23:44<bigjust12345>i was wondering if anyone can help me....i accidentally uninstalled apt....i downloaded the latest version of it but when i installed it the dependency where newer versions then i had so i mucked everything up. i was wondering if there was a way to get apt including all dependences and its dependencies dependencies.
23:44<galvao>themill: skype is already installed so it shouldn't break right?

23:44<paco>detrout, it's the same. The /dev/v4l/by-path/ items change and dance all the time. Sometimes they keep the same name, but most of the times they change their names and numbers. Total caos. How can this be solved?
23:45<themill>galvao: right. Updating the firmware-iwlwifi should be quite safe to do
23:45<galvao>good to hear that
23:45<galvao>is it the same command for apt-get? "safe-upgrade"?
23:45<themill>galvao: just "upgrade".
23:45<galvao>k
23:46<galvao>themill: Thanks a lot
23:46<themill>no worries, happy hunting

23:48<detrout>paco: I'm not sure, http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Device_Filenames_and_udev has a section "Example V4L2 device rule file" which describes making a stable symlink to a video device when using udevd. Probably its create a rule file and fiddle with the manufacturer/product/serial attributes
