01:02<jm_>!quick reference
01:02<dpkg>The Debian Reference will answer most of your questions about Debian. The latest version (v2) is at http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ . Read it after installing Debian and before asking for support, as it is the closest thing Debian has to a manual. You can install this too, the package name is debian-reference: «aptitude install debian-reference»
01:03<jm_>!grounding
01:03<dpkg>Before asking in here or on the <debian-user> mailing list, you should read the Installation Guide, or if you already have Debian installed, the Debian Reference. The Debian Administrator's Handbook is also good. Ask me about <ig>, <overview>, <reference>, <refcard>, <docs>, <manuals>, <fundamentals>, <newbiedoc>, <faq>, <unix lessons>, <general cli tutorial>, <debian-handbook> (e.g. in your IRC client, type /msg dpkg reference).
01:03<jm_>some of this will help too
01:03<moo_>eh
01:03<moo_>That's no fun really
01:04<themill>(also, crunchbang is not debian. Knowing that might help too)
01:04<moo_>what's the point of having a Debian channel if no one wants to talk about Debian. Tech support?

01:04<moo_>It's Debian
01:05*SamB thought #! was shabang
01:05<moo_># is pronounced a lot of ways around the world, but "sha" is a new one for me

01:07<themill>sh coming from "hash"
01:07<moo_>o
01:07<SamB>I thouht it was short for "sharp"
01:07<moo_>Btw #! switched from Ubuntu to Debian a long time ago
01:08<themill>It's still not debian. If it were debian, you'd download it from www.debian.org
01:08<moo_>It's a Debian fork

01:11<jm_>ok after 10 minutes I get it, #! was meant as crunchbang, I thought it was supposed to be some sort of mark of excitement :)

01:16<Infiltrator>LOL
01:16<Supaplex>this is qotd material here.
01:17<moo_>Yes.. because it has gentoo in the name it's obviously a tracker specifically for gentoo distros
01:17<Infiltrator>I haven't seen anything funnier today.
01:18<themill>moo_: still not debian. Perhaps if you don't have a Debian user support question, you could stop now.

04:18<umpadumpa2>Hello, we are running a small network where the users are managed via ldap. From time to time there is a lag of about 30s when logging in, running sudo, etc. What makes it really hard for me to find the problem, is that there seems to be nothing going on during that time. I can see from the logs, that only after these 30s, he first runs pam_unix and then pam_ldap. Any idea where to look?

04:21<TobiX>umpadumpa2: At least sudo tries to resolve the local hostname (for logging) before doing anything, so you might want to check if that is possible via /etc/hosts or if the network needs to be used for that...

04:21<jm_>if you can easily reproduce this try stracing parent process (for sudo that would be shell, use -f etc)

04:24<umpadumpa2>@jm_ I cant, it seems kind of random to me, its always 4-5 out of 12 machines at the same time, but its fine after a few minutes

07:38<dpkg>To disable the bell: "xset b off" in X, "setterm -blength 0" in console. For some reason, bash beeps excessively when in emacs (default) mode; "set -o vi" puts it in vi editing mode, which doesn't beep on partial completions. In konsole, Settings->Bell->Visible Bell. 20:49<Chav>I checked the UUID and it's correct.
20:50<Chav>My root fs is also encrypted. Maybe that's the problem? It has to mount before the partition can be mounted within it?

22:53<sney>then md is the better option. fakeraid is called "fake" because it does not offer any useful raid features.
22:53<sney>it tells you "ok these disks are in an array" but all of the redundancy is in software. md - linux kernel raid - is also software base and has way better support under a linux operating system than fakeraid
22:55<qboster>yeah...
22:56<sney>the only reason to use fakeraid is to have access to the same array under windows on the same machine
