00:06<Stelpa>Hiya! I am having quite a bit of trouble getting my debian system set up... I went through basic installation, but being the linux newbie I am, I don't know what to do now, since I have no graphical interface :X
00:07<Stelpa>I would like to install xfce4, but I don't think I have wireless drivers yet, so I plugged into my modem, hopefully I can connect that way
00:07<Stelpa>I have only ever used Linux Mint and Ubuntu, so this is rather unusual for me

00:21<haylo>yeah, maybe it will work after an "apt-get update" like samb says. if not pastebin the contents of the file /etc/apt/sources.list
00:21<Stelpa>apt-get update says 4 different sources and then says "reading package lists... Done"
00:22<SamB>Stelpa: so what does "apt-get install xfce4" do now?
00:22<Stelpa>E: Unable to locate package xfce4
00:22<SamB>okay, pastebin time then
00:23<Stelpa>i can't really pastebin
00:23<SamB>hmm

00:23<Stelpa>i will check still
00:24<SamB>okay, do you have any lines that start with "deb http://" or "deb ftp://" ?
00:24<Stelpa>no, the only source is "deb cdrom:......"
00:24<Stelpa>some are commented out tho

00:29<Stelpa>didn't realize i'd have no interface :x

00:38<dpkg>Firmware is software to operate electronic devices, usually contained in EPROM or flash memory. See also <installer firmware>. http://wiki.debian.org/Firmware

09:20<Airwave>blast007: If I were to manually install it, could it be best to install the .deb from unstable?
09:20<TobiX>Airwave: I see no reason why APT::Default-Release shouldn't work. In fact, I just used it yesterday
09:20<babilen>Airwave: You can try to backport both (their build-dependencies are satisfied) -- See "/msg dpkg ssb" for information on that. I am, however, not sure how realistic/easy that is for both of these packages as I am not familiar with them.
09:20<Airwave>TobiX: Yeah, I just misunderstood what the poster said didn't work since Squeeze.
09:21<babilen>TobiX: Mixing stable with anything but backports is just asking for trouble
09:21<babilen>(also not a supported setup)

09:21<themill>There's also no consistent name you can put in the default-release field that actually works as required.
09:22<Airwave>I have to admit that I've already installed the .deb from unstable for tt-rss.
09:22<blast007>Airwave: by manually, I mean installing the dependencies yourself and manually extracting and configuring their files. http://doc.owncloud.org/server/5.0/admin_manual/installation/installation_source.html
09:22<TobiX>babilen: True that

09:22<Airwave>blast007: It's not done Debian-like when I do that though.
09:23<TobiX>You could always build your own backports (If you are experienced enough)
09:23<babilen>Airwave: Well ... I'd backport it. At least that is a supported approach. Doing that is not hard
09:23<Airwave>No config in /etc and read-only data in /usr/share, etc.
09:23<Airwave>TobiX, babilen: That's a good idea.
09:24<Airwave>I'll do that.

12:55<haylo>propreitary software in debian is sectioned in debian, into component areas "main contrib and non-free" for legal reasons. A base debian install usually just has "main" activated. so if you arent happy with the free radeon driver, activate the other areas in the file /etc/apt/sources.list . and then "apt-get update" and install the firmware-linux-nonfree , and ask dpkg about fglrx dkms "/msg dpkg flgrx dkms"

13:11<SynrG>brian: i had good success with non-free firmware for a friend's n. islands card
13:11<brian>i am trying to right now. i would prefer to use FOSS drivers though
13:11<SynrG>again, non-free *firmware* is not the same thing as non-free *driver*
13:11<SynrG>the firmware resides on the card itself
13:12<brian>which is fglrx?
13:12<SynrG>no
13:12<brian>so it is the driver
13:12<brian>not the firmware
13:12<SynrG>you were sent the radeon firmware factoid by the dpkg bot earlier. did you read it?
13:12<brian>yes

13:12<SynrG>did you do what it said to install the firmware? (not fglrx)?
13:13<SynrG>on my friend's card, all he needed was the free radeon driver and the non-free firmware, and everything just worked.

13:15<SynrG>!tell brian about firmware

13:16<SynrG>brian: in fact, AMD appears to be more open-source friendly than nVidia. we really haven't much to complain about.
13:17<SynrG>vendors need to have a compelling business reason to have their minds changed from just following the status quo. debian believes there is a strong case to be made for it, but vendors are slow to be convinced.

16:40<tgs3>but you are right, responsible people should not use any 3rd party (not trusted, not open) services. I wish it would be easier to convince firends, family, etc to that
