12:14<SynrG>!running x as root
12:14<dpkg>well, running x as root is suicidal due to issues with external security exploits - and yes, they *do* happen in all variants of *n?x, Debian or otherwise - though the developers try to beat them down. Instead, log in as normal and either do 'su' or 'sudo'. Ask me about <root x> for alternatives.

12:49<SynrG>thatguychuck: it's not a matter of 'bad practice' vs. good, but simply what works. eventually you might hit an abi bump that would make the package no longer work on a later release
12:49<SynrG>for example
12:50<SynrG>certainly for ISVs, if they can get away with a single version that works on all three, then why not?
12:50<SynrG>in some cases they might be accomplishing that by statically linking the binary (bloats the binary and makes security a bit of a nightmare)
12:51<SynrG>if that's the case, that's ... less than ideal :p
12:52<SynrG>thatguychuck: what real problem are you trying to solve?

Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.

21:33<uniqdom>I'm trying to learn how to configure a kernel by my own. I was reading "Linux kernel in a nutshell" which I think is a great book for noobs like me. the thing is that in the book a 2.6.17 kernel was used... I know that the process of compiling a kernel is still the same, but there are new configurations added... Do you know another good book or a link to a more uptodate info?

22:41<careet>Hey guys, I have an embarrassingly noobish question I can't seem to resolve... I'm wondering how to modify my login screen. I'm running Wheezy with Mate, icewm and lightdm. I can't figure out which of these the login screen is set by, so that's where I'm stuck I guess. If anyone's got any input, I'd appreciate it.
