00:49<careet>Thanks again for the help configuring the custom login screen in lightdm earlier. If anyone else is attempting the same, it's worth knowing that there's a bug in lightdm's current stable release where the background images fail to load if the image has an alpha channel. To remove that via gimp, just go layer > transparancy > remove alpha channel, and you're good to go. Threw me for a loop for a while, haha

08:10<haylo_>if you have the folder, its pretty common practice to have to make an individual configuration file to hold some defaults
08:11<haylo_>like i use .xinnitrc all the time, which does not exist usually until you make it. likewise many people make an xorg.conf file for themselves, and the system default it stored elsewhere

22:56<miguel>I dont know which Debian need to install : i386 or amd64

23:01<careet>miguel: i386 is another term for what you probably know as x86, or 32-bit. Even though x86 -sounds- bigger and badder than x64, it's still a 32 bit instruction set. So anything x86 = 32-bit. You have a 64-bit CPU, so go for the 64-bit installation, known as AMD64.
23:02<miguel>chaler: which do you recommend?
23:02<careet>But as chealer mentioned, a 64 bit CPU can run a 32 bit OS. It doesn't work the other way around, though. There's usually no reason to run a 32 bit OS on 64 bit hardware, so unless you have some special circumstance, go for the 64 bit. I have a CPU from the same family as yours on my desktop machine, and that's what I use.
23:02<miguel>careet: Thanks
23:04<miguel>Thanks all
23:04<chealer>miguel: I never ventured into amd64 yet, but from what I heard it's almost as convenient as i386 now.
23:04<careet>np :) Running a 32 bit OS on 64 bit hardware just essentially means you're losing performance your CPU is capable of. In a 32 Bit OS< you won't be able to run any 64 Bit programs, either. However, if you install a 64 Bit OS, and you come across a package/program that was only designed for 32 bit environments, you'll be able to run it just fine (this is the case for Debian, anyway. Exceptions exist for some Windows programs,
23:04<careet> but there are many ways around them that don't include using a 32 bit OS instead)
23:05<SamB>it's perfectly possible to run a 32-bit userspace with a 64-bit kernel though
23:05-!-vladuke [~vladuke@] has joined #debian
23:05<careet>another thing (so I can run my mouth more) worth mentioning is that in my case, I manually allowed Debian to download and use i386 (32 bit) packages in my AMD64 install so that I could run Steam
