06:30<babilen>bullgard4: Please tell me what you are trying to achieve and why you have to know what /usr/share/installation-report/install-report.template is -- I mean it is precisely what it is and the name of the file together with its content should provide enough information to conclude what it is used for. I simply don't understand why you care and what you need this specific information for.

09:02<Maulkin>peter1138: Um, no. Basically.
09:03<Poenikatu>Hello, all. This morning I installed Debian GNU/Linux amd64 and I have heard that a 32-bit program can run on a 64-bit system. Could anybody point me to the solution to this FAQ?

09:03<Maulkin>peter1138: checkinstall turns the "make install" step into a .deb.
09:03<Maulkin>Poenikatu: Yes, it's called multiarch. What are you actually trying to do though?
09:03<pawn>yes, but checkinstall fails at the end because of the wrong "architecture"... but I found no option
09:04<pawn>to cross-build a i386deb under amd64
09:04<Maulkin>pawn: So, you possibly built the wrond architecture?

09:05<pawn>e.g. ia32libs, but this I have...
09:05<Poenikatu>Maulkin, I have a commercial editor (my favourite) which is a 32-bit version, but a 64-bit version is not available.

10:42<csotelo>that is my error
10:43<SynrG>why are you doing upgrade instead of dist-upgrade?
10:43<SynrG>dpkg: squeeze->wheezy
10:43<dpkg>Read chapter 4 ("Upgrades from Debian 6.0") of the <release notes>. In /etc/apt/sources.list, change "squeeze" to "wheezy" (noting that <wheezy-backports> have changed on the mirrors). apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade. See also <squeeze->wheezy failures>.
10:44<SynrG>hmm. that factoid does say to do upgrade first.
10:45<SynrG>did you, perhaps, try to upgrade something else from wheezy *before* the complete upgrade from squeeze -> wheezy?

10:48<SynrG>of course
10:48<SynrG>because to continue, it needs to configure the broken packages you have now
10:49<SynrG>and it can't do that without a python that matches the package version
10:49<csotelo>hmmmm yes, but how could I do that
10:49<SynrG>now, you could try downgrading every package requiring python back to squeeze versions first ...

10:50<csotelo>hmmm 60MB more mess

11:07<babilen>sml: Something like "aptitude reinstall -o DPkg::Options::='--force-confmiss' ~i~ngrub" and the same with "~i~n^linux-" might do the trick -- but that is just a guess ;(
11:07<sml>babilen: wish me luck
11:08<sml>babilen: i did apt-get install --reinstall on all the linux-images present in dpkg --get-selections "linux*"

11:08<sml>and remove /boot as a mount in /etc/fstab since now it's just a sub-dir on /
11:09<babilen>One problem you might run into is that configuration files are not necessarily restored. I haven't checked what counts as configuration file for linux-* and grub* though -- That is the reason for the "--force-confmiss" option above.
11:09<babilen>sml: Yes, you have to run "update-grub2" afterwards, but that should actually have been triggered by the kernel (re)installation

I did a typical rescue (boot from usb, remount + chroot etc) and managed to get all LVMs mounted correctly. but trying to mount /dev/md3 just wouldn't work. kept saying invalid argument which I guess means it couldn't identify the filesytem but could detect the partition. 14:40<SynrG>ixi: the downside of dpkg-divert --local is you won't get the maintainer's enhancements to that file. but since the file is pretty lean anyway ...
14:41<SynrG>it's unlikely to receive any (or any significant) changes in future versions. so it's pretty low risk to divert locally.
14:41<SynrG>use this method generally *with extreme caution*

16:50<cpbills>StefCT: remove the cruft; get rid of the previous attempts to swap to make sure you are not swapping twice, which would leave you with capslock being capslock and escape being escape.
16:51<StefCT>and I added the setxkbmap line before . /etc/X11/Xsession
16:51<StefCT>yeah, maybe, but I would be surprised it that was the problem... because at first I had only one attempt which worked first and then stopped working

18:12<babilen>sabian2008: First and foremost: If you run testing or unstable you want support in #debian-next and it is not much of a problem pull packages from unstable into testing. A tesing/unstable mix is quite a common setup at this point in the release cycle. See "/msg dpkg tum" for information on how to configure that. :)
