07:08<SynrG>regarding blast007's comment, yeah, i would generally just use bridged with virtualbox ...
07:08<Tyan>blast007: apprently... maybe I should try to change that ... I'm just unsure, because at my current location, I'm not allowed to use routers and wonder, if that would count as one...
07:08<SynrG>then i can set up my local network's DHCP server to assign a fixed IP# by MAC to the guest
07:09<SynrG>in fact, i don't have direct administrative control over my DHCP server at work, but just requested the net admins assign an IP#, so all is well.
07:09<Tyan>SynrG: vmware allows the assignement of LAN-segments
07:09<blast007>Tyan: then you probably don't want bridged then. Bridged would act like there are two devices on the same wire.
07:09<SynrG>for more help with vmware, you can try #vmware @ irc.freenode.net

07:46<apm1>sire, look friend don't look at it as an arm board inside a laptop look at it as a PC which has an arm board inside it , it has a bios or a firmware (maybe even EFI ) to bring it to a bootloader for booting into a kernel even
07:47<Sicelo>you gentlemen are talking about an ARM device? if so, sire, you may want to /join #debian-arm.
07:47<TobiX>sire: Let's consider a Linux ARM device I know something about. Take the Kobo Mini: The CPU inside the Kobo has some integraded bootloader that searches the connected hardware (either soldered Flash, a microSD card or even devices connected via a simple serial bus) for a valid "boot block" (CPU-vendor specific)
07:47<apm1>sire, it is your choice to keep android or not just like you'd keep or remove it on an x86 pc
07:47<apm1>it is possible to dual boot android and debian if you can get debian to work
07:48<TobiX>sire: For the Linux that is running on that device, the Kobo manafacture installed u-boot (a bootloader) and the Linux kernel onto a microSD card soldered to the board.
07:49<TobiX>sire: And that is only one way to get from power-on to Linux. Every CPU-vender is free to implement his own boot scheme - You are lucky if you have something like "firmware" or a BIOS or even UEFI on that...

12:31<retrospectacus>vaio: the repositories and their 30K+ packages are there to provide users a full functional environment. 12:42-!-hort [~hort@109.188.125.169] has joined #debian
12:42<retrospectacus>!loop-aes
12:42<dpkg>loop-AES is an out-of-tree Linux encryption implementation, providing a kernel module (loop.ko) for creating a loop device with an <AES> cipher. This can be used to encrypt local file systems and disk partitions. The loop-aes source package was removed from Debian post-Squeeze to resolve bug #651857; a compatible encryption mode is available in <dm-crypt>.
12:43<donfede>retrospectacus: thanks for the feedback -- looking closer at dm-crypt now; should that be able to ready my existing AES partitions?
12:44<haylo>yeah , use luks with cryptsetup, its easier anyway. they have some tools to handle the aes loop encryption if you need to use it to open some disks as well

14:21<donfede>haylo: do you use dm-crypt? i've been reviewing the wiki, and some forums (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dm-crypt ; http://code.google.com/p/cryptsetup/ ; https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-security-4/loop-aes-vs-dm-crypt-385324/ )
14:22<donfede>the last link, suggests AES loop is still being maintained (upstream), which matches what I recall seeing on their site earlier this week (they have 3.x patches) http://loop-aes.sourceforge.net/loop-AES.README
14:22<donfede>the part that catches my attention - is according to the linuxquestions forum : dm-crypt keeps the key at the start of the encrypted partition?!?!
14:23<donfede>along with the forum response, I also make it a practice to keep the key separate from the data - thus my concern over dm-crypt (granted, i'm still reviewing)
14:23<donfede>curious per 1st hand experience/feedback.
