03:23<Zaba>EmleyMoor, loop mounting with an offset will work regardless of partition table type

03:25<Zaba>EmleyMoor, failing that, losetup the file and run them on the loop device

04:10-!-bullgard4 [] has joined #debian
04:10<phillipsjk>I switched keyboards and still get the same symptoms. I wonder is it has to do with the asychronous boot.
04:11<phillipsjk>I don't think chromium has a built-in flash player.
04:12<dpkg>Flash is frequently used to deliver interactivity, audio and video through a web browser. Ask me about <gnash> and <lightspark> for free implementations or <adobe flash> for a non-free implementation.
04:12<babylon>argh - that's the main reason why i use chromium now and then - if adobe's linux flashplayer does not support some flash content I am using chrome

07:56<Tubia87>hi all, I would like to install debian testing in my home pc. In this pc I have ubuntu 11.10 with a partition for /home. If I install debian over ubuntu (format ubuntu partiton), it is possible to keep configurations inside /home? Are they compatible? I.e.: .filezilla folder with congigs inside

08:01<abrotman>symlink why?
08:02<babilen>Tubia87: Just make sure that you *do not* create a filesystem on /home - that is please make sure you have the right settings during the partitioning step. I also wouldn't want to guarantee that Ubuntu's configuration files are 100% compatible (let alone the same) as in Debian and your overall experience might be better if you install Debian from scratch and then migrate selected data from your Ubuntu backup.
08:02<Tubia87>apm1, babilen thank you
08:03<Tubia87>in fact I have only .thunderbird, .firefox and .filezilla to keep
08:03<apm1>should probably be smooth sailing
08:04<abrotman>not likely
08:04<babilen>Tubia87: Further note that we recommend to install wheezy (stable) and upgrade from there if you want to run testing. I'd especially recommend the netinstall image with firmware if you have a working internet connection as that allows you to use most hardware out-of-the-box without having to download and provide firmware files separately. This is, naturally, all discussed in the <installation guide>

08:06<Tubia87>babilen, yep I was reading it :) Preferences for DE? I think cinnamon but I would like to have xmonad at disposal
08:06<babilen>Tubia87: And to give you some tips regarding testing: First and foremost: It is not supported in this channel but in #debian-next (cf. /topic) and I would recommend to read the article/faq at which contains a number of tips and tricks that are applicable/relevant for testing as well.
08:07<babilen>Tubia87: Sure, in that case you might *not* want to install any desktop task during the initial installation but install Xorg / cinnamon / xmonad after the initial installation. I would recommend to make sure that you have the standard task installed though as it contains a number of tools you simply would expect to be available at any time.
08:08<Tubia87>babilen, ok! I was asking here just because I have not decided yet wich flavour of debian to install (it's a home pc and I would like to provide a good experience to everyone at home)
08:08-!-jerryzhou [~jerryzhou@] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
08:09<babilen>Tubia87: Another point is that you will probably want to pull packages from unstable into testing sooner or later. This is primarily due to the idiosyncrasies of testing (no real security support, package removals, tricky <transitions>, ...) and you might therefore want to configure your system as a testung unstable mix which is discussed in <tum> -- All these reference in < ... > refer to factoids you can ask our bot, dpkg with, for example, ...
08:09<babilen>... "/msg dpkg tum"
08:09<babilen>Tubia87: Well, you have to install stable anyway at the beginning and you don't have to upgrade to testing immediately.

Debian does not ship either but Icedove and Iceweasel respectively (read <why iceweasel> and take a look at and you might run into problems because of that. I have only ever used the Debian versions so I can't speak from personal experience.
08:13<babilen>Tubia87: I'd recommend to join us in #debian-next and to familiarise yourself with our bots dpkg and judd. Read <dpkgbot> and <install debian> and take a look at the documentation on judd at

08:19<babilen>Tubia87: You might want to export your bookmarks to HTML before transitioning and I wouldn't really expect problems with your mails. I mean the data won't be lost (you'll still have the mbox files after all), but it *might* not be as easy as simply copying ~/.mozilla/ and starting Iceweasel/Icedove -- but then it might, I simply don't know. Maybe abrotman could elaborate on the problems he expected you to run into.
