01:33<Axz>apm1, so if i install sid 3.9.0 should be installed by default?!

01:33<Axz>whats sid's download mirrir!?
01:34<Axz>because cant find it freaky anywhere :/
01:34<Axz>mirror
01:34<apm1>just replace wheezy with sid in your sources, list
01:34<Axz>i was plannng to install sid... just gave wheezy a try
01:34<apm1>and do an apt-get update&&apt-get dist-upgrade
01:34<Axz>migrating from Fedora thats why so clumsy :(
01:35<apm1>however this only if you understand the benifits and shortcomings of sid
01:36<apm1>Axz, the best practice is you don't install sid you upgrade to it

01:40<apm1>yes it should

01:40<apm1>you'll be happy to know that sid is rolling :)
01:41<Axz>btw running Nvidia
01:41<apm1>oh thats a nightmare on Debian
01:41<Axz>lol
01:41<Axz>so better stick to 304?!
01:41<apm1>but some 3rd party scripts exist to make it simple
01:42<apm1>304 as in the driver version ?
01:42<apm1>the noveau open source drivers will be just fine if you don't game or do any CAD

03:30<RainbowW>if i'm doing a for loop in a bash script, is there a way to keep a count of the number of values of i, and output which one i'm iterating on, i.e., for a status display in the script?
03:31<weasel>i=0 before
03:31<weasel>and i=$((i+1)) inside?
03:31<weasel>or just "echo -n ." if nothing else gets printed.

03:32<RainbowW>that would count the number of iterations done, but is there a way to count the number of times the loop WILL run, before it runs, so i can get, eg 4 of 37
03:32<weasel>no.
03:33<weasel>not without, you know, running it.
03:33<RainbowW>hmm. if i'm operating on files, count the number of files that match the input spec, before running the loop? i.e., *.tar?
03:34<RainbowW>i'm putting an awful lot of work into what really is a pretty stupid script :)

05:50<dpkg>Unfortunately, <mate> is neither in Debian, nor likely to be, based on technical objections and lack of anyone doing the work. Therefore, you can't get support for it here. 09:14<stevenm_>Hey, without repackaging a .deb - can I install it and tell dpkg to ignore a particular dependency?
09:14-!-babilen [~babilen@babilen.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
09:14<stevenm_>The only reason I ask is it checks for this dependency and fails, despite it being installed just fine.
09:14<abrotman>how is it installed just fine if the package manager says it is not?
09:14<stevenm_>a good question
09:15<stevenm_>not one I have an answer for, it just does.
09:15<daemonkeeper>Maybe try to answer that first.
09:15<stevenm_>This package depends on package lsb... lsb is installed at version 4.0 and the package I'm installing needs it to be >=3.1
09:16-!-ksn [~ksn@00019501.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
09:16<stevenm_>Yet it states that is a dependency problem preventing configuration of the package
09:16<abrotman>what is the package in question ?
09:16<stevenm_>actually my lsb version is 4.1
09:17<stevenm_>I'll tell you - but I don't want to hear any alternatives :)

14:54<Argure>not really, but as far as I know modifications in /etc/fstab require a reboot before they become active
14:55<SynrG>no, that is incorrect.
14:55<SynrG>you can simply "mount -a" to mount all automounted things
14:55<SynrG>(i.e. everything that doesn't have the 'noauto' option)
14:55<SynrG>that is, in fact, how they get mounted at boot.
14:55<SynrG>anything already mounted will not be mounted again.
14:55<sney>mount all the things

17:19<misha1>Is there anyone in here who would be able to help me with setting up my mailserver?
17:19<retrospectacus>!ask
17:19<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.

21:50<wdoodle>the cable has been suggested before. Unfortunately I don't have another to try with (wired as null modem actually). And that fact that over so many boots and usages of the machine, it is consistently the same place where is happens and the same place where is stops happening in the startup sequence. Then doesn't happen again. Shutdown messages are fine. I might be more inclined to buy or build a new one if it were, as you point out, rando
21:51<k-man>wdoodle, yeah, fair enough
21:51<wdoodle>of course, I have very little experience with serial consoles, so if you wanted to insist about the cable, I'd wouldn't be obstinate about it

23:01<DennisTheTiger>For those who are curious about byobu...
23:01<DennisTheTiger>!byobu
23:01<dpkg>byobu is a set of useful profiles and a profile-switcher for GNU <screen>, packaged for Squeeze. https://launchpad.net/byobu
23:01<Zachster1996>it is wonderful
23:01<Zachster1996>i love it
23:02<DennisTheTiger>Zachster1996: There is a forum on stackexchange, have you sought your answer there?

23:03<DennisTheTiger>There's a support link on the byobu home page that I found. I'll have dpkg msg you the link for the launchpad site.
23:03<Zachster1996>k
23:04<DennisTheTiger>You'll have to go to the home page to find it. This said, best not ask the "anyone" question around here, because you'll find yourself dissatisfied with a dearth of answers.
23:05<Zachster1996>also too is there any way to run a task on startup in byobu that will be sized to whatever screen you use to view it when you login
23:05<SamB>well, "does anyone know how to ...?" isn't so bad, it could be better worded as "how do I ...?" though
23:06<Zachster1996>because one thing on my server is a minecraft server which runs as a commandline app through java

23:16<Zachster1996>this may sound like a stupid question, but where do you put static dns addresses. I know that resolv.conf doesnt stay and /etc/network/interfaces is depreciated
23:17<SamB>how is /etc/network/interfaces deprecated exactly
23:17<SamB>unless you mean that some people say nasty things about it?
23:17<Zachster1996>not really depreciated but
23:18<SamB>have you been listening to the GNOME people
23:18<Zachster1996>no
23:18<Zachster1996>so would you use dns-nameservers
23:18<Zachster1996>kinda like in ubuntu
23:18<Zachster1996>im transitioning from ubuntu to debian
23:19<SamB>actually I think I personally just use the ones I get through DHCP from my ISP
