09:56<disposable>how do i make my system bootable on a uefi system? i've got gpt partition table, 1st partition is EFI boot partition (i've formatted it as fat32), i've got grub-efi installed. do i now just run grub-install /dev/sda or /dev/sda1 or what? do i need that partition mounted somewhere first?

10:00<sascha>ixi, will try that next time. Haven't thought of it.
10:00<babilen>It might also be that your processor is buggy and that you haven't upgraded the firmware of your mainboard to reflect that or that you don't load recent microcode.
10:00<babilen>dpkg: microcode
10:00<dpkg>Microcode are instructions/structures for implementing high-level machine code within processors. The Linux kernel can load updated microcode on most x86 processors. Microcode patches for Intel and AMD64 CPUs are packaged for Debian as intel-microcode and amd64-microcode respectively; installing the relevant package is recommended to ensure system stability. Ask me about <non-free sources>.

10:03<babilen>ixi: Yes, they are but it is *the only way* one can assure that the processor is not buggy. You are using these "non-free encrypted blobs" already even if you don't install microcode from within Debian explicitly. It is simply a part of the firmware .. It is ridiculous to use hardware that requires blobs but prevent the OS from loading the most recent blobs. (or to differentiate between "firmware" == good, os level binary blobs == bad)

10:11<babilen>sascha: That hardware should be well supported, but you require firmware for certain hardware components. Please install firmware-linux, firmware-iwlwifi and intel-microcode -- Trying a newer kernel might also be an option and you can install the kernel from backports

22:04<doubledutch>short_circuit: Back on topic, one monitor, or two?
22:04<short_circuit>I may not have the terms right but I've been running linux exclusively home and work for years now so I know some.
22:04<short_circuit>One monitor for this rig
22:05<short_circuit>Everything was fine up until today when I tried some new games... Well. Like I mention in the story in the pastebin.
22:05<short_circuit>I'm googling randr now
22:05<doubledutch>If you sudo rm xorg.conf, won't it regenerate a "square one" default when it boots?
22:06<SamB>wouldn't it make more sense to "sudo mv" it to somewhere
22:06<doubledutch>Yeah, like mv xorg.conf xorg.ohboy.conf
22:07<short_circuit>I noticed I don't have an xorg.conf. I read on google that it shouldn't be necessary but I don't know.
22:08<doubledutch>Yes, Debian does not create this by default. Sort of sorry I stepped in.. but I got you back to "square one" like I said I would! :D
