00:11<Samkov>I love debian but am wanting to expand my linux desktop knowledge. I have a low/mid end netbook that I am wanting to use and was wondering what other distros you all like? I hear good things about fedora, gentoo, and even arch. Suggestions? Something with a lightweight feel
00:12<Nemoder>I'd recommend staying with debian and testing out other distros inside a VM
00:12<Samkov>thats exactly what I plan to do :) well beforehand at least
00:13<Samkov>I've messed around with fedora a bit, but so far nothing has done it for me like debian has, I just want to branch out a little
00:13<Nemoder>there's always linux from scratch if you want to get down to nuts and bolts

00:14<asmr>hi
00:14<Samkov>not that down lol :)
00:14<asmr>coco
00:14<delirium>Samkov do you run the default Debian desktop? Don't have to get your hands too dirty to use the netinst and experiment with your environment.
00:14-!-asmr [~asmr@197.247.72.39] has quit []
00:15<Nemoder>yep, plenty of customization within debian. and really other distros are a bit off-topic here, best to ask about their features in their respective channels
00:15<Samkov>I actually run MATE so I know its not considered a pure Debian desktop (yet) but as far as system goes, debian all the way.
00:16<delirium>I don't even run a desktop environment. Probably one of the few Debian users that uses blackbox for my window manager with cairo-dock to make it futuristic (circa 1990 futuristic)

00:23<heribertorodriguez>Nemoder, I got the desktop but when I run iceweasel the screen becomes blue
00:24<heribertorodriguez>or any other applications goes into blue screen
00:24<Nemoder>that is very strange, what kind of video hardware does the laptop have?
00:25<heribertorodriguez>it's an old Dell workstation M60
00:25-!-drewdavis [~drew@67.204.179.76] has joined #debian
00:25<Nemoder>hendry: if it's a service you want to load after you login to your desktop you might want to use xsession or whatever your DE offers instead
00:26<hendry>Nemoder: i want it for a PI, so it need to work without X
00:27<Nemoder>then yeah, use update-rc.d to create the proper run level links
00:27<hendry>Nemoder: i heard of "autostart" what's that?
00:27<BlueG>I'm trying to get a better understanding of apt pinning. Initially I thought that I could use a negative Pin-Priority to say only install if explicitly requested, but update once installed. However, reading man apt_preferences again, it seems negative priority will not get upgraded automatically. Will a priorty between 0 and 100 do what I want?
00:28<themill>BlueG: yes
00:28<heribertorodriguez>I only can see the screen normally with the background and its logo
00:29-!-Samkov [~Samkov@d27-96-36-35.nap.wideopenwest.com] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:29<Nemoder>heribertorodriguez: from a terminal (ctrl-alt-f2 to switch to one, ctrl-alt-f7 to switch back) run 'lspci | grep VGA'
00:29<heribertorodriguez>this is the config of my workstation https://www.dell.com/downloads/us/products/precn/wsm60_spec.pdf
00:30<Nemoder>hmm nvidia quadro
00:30<heribertorodriguez>yep
00:30<delirium>hendry: Google's first result on "debian autostart" is a script that you can use for a startup script that which should be triggered with update-rc.d. update-rc.d is what you want to use to start applications on debian.

00:33<Nemoder>maybe the quadro FX uses the legacy driver, anyone know?
00:35<SamB>!quadro fx
00:35<SamB>!quadro
00:35<Nemoder>http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html
00:35<Nemoder>yeah it needs the older 173 driver
00:35<BlueG>I'm a bit confused by the explanation, "causes a version to be installed only if there is no installed version of the package", but archives marked with "NotAutomatic: yes" and "ButAutomaticUpgrades: yes" are given priority 100, and that sounds like what I want.
00:36<delirium>http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/nvidia-glx-legacy-173xx
00:36<delirium>has a lot of the quadro cards listed on that page
00:36<Nemoder>heribertorodriguez: http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Version_173.14.35_.28legacy_GPUs.29
00:37<heribertorodriguez>ok
00:37<heribertorodriguez>but now how do I get the terminal window?
00:38<heribertorodriguez>it appears all the screen as blue
00:38<Nemoder>if you can't open one in X use ctrl-alt-f2
00:38<heribertorodriguez>ok
00:39<BlueG>As I'm looking at that, maybe the behavior I am looking at what you get with priority 100-499. What is the difference between 0 to 100 and 100 to 500?
00:39<Nemoder>heribertorodriguez: to edit your sources you can use 'nano /etc/apt/sources.list'
00:39<Nemoder>as root user

04:41<khaos>thanks babilen the latest version of iceweasel is "release"?
04:42<babilen>khaos: that would be the latest release, yes. Some people would argue that the latest version is "beta" or "aurora" but those are, well, alpha/beta versions that haven't been released by mozilla yet.
04:42<khaos>yeap thank you.
04:42<khaos>realy thanks. and what about security updates?
04:43<babilen>khaos: Mozilla uses different release channels with a clearly defined meaning. We package all of them, but I would stick to release if I were you.

11:04<patwotrik>is removable devices known to cause problems?
11:04<patwotrik>cause i have problems with them all the time
11:05<SynrG>please explain
11:05<mc68040>!ask
11:05<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
11:06<patwotrik>well atm it does not show up when i plug it in
11:06<patwotrik>a moment ago it appeared but when i started to edit a config file it closed down
11:07<SynrG>what is "it"?
11:07<patwotrik>an sd card
11:07<SynrG>that sounds like a physical/electrical problem
11:07<SynrG>clean the contacts
11:08<patwotrik>hmm mok
11:08<patwotrik>thanks for the tip
11:08<patwotrik>but i have had similar problems with different usb drives too
11:08<patwotrik>in various usb ports
11:08<nadir>how to you mount?
11:09<patwotrik>i'll just wait for it to show up in dolphin
11:09<SynrG>debian wheezy? + kde?
11:09<nadir>different: try a different way to mount and see if the problem persists. cli is a good idea (be it as root or with pmount)

11:09<SynrG>patwotrik: might be interesting to see syslog from around the time of the incident
11:10<patwotrik>i'll try to fix that sometime
11:10<patwotrik>but thanks for the help
11:10<SynrG>maybe some misbehaving attached USB device flooding it with crap?
11:10<nadir>I'd also try any window-manager, none of them is much bigger than 5 MB for installing, and check if it has the same problems.
11:10<SynrG>if it's a PC, recheck wiring of the USB ports to the header
11:10<SynrG>i once got that wrong
11:10<patwotrik>my gf is telling me it's time to go :)
11:10<SynrG>front panel connector.
11:12<SynrG>e.g. mixing up power / signal pin is probably going to do no favours to all other USB devices :p
11:13<SynrG>it's usually "keyed" to prevent that, but in some systems it's still possible to accidentally offset the plug by one pin

13:16<ompaul>bony: do you know what you asked? you asked to limit bandwidth, I explained that your front end proxy server (say squid) does the heavy lifting, it needs to be tweeked for the big packages, then all machines reference that export http_proxy=http://mylan.proxy.whatever:3128 in their .profile
13:16<ompaul>bony: that way works, I know, it's how I set up my office :)
13:17<ompaul>then you do one thing make sure every machine points to the same repos (or the minimal amount you want) so that you can limit your bandwidth consumption

13:22<SynrG>holden: you don't need to use the adobe flash player for that. you would just need to (somehow) download ... there are many plugins for popular browsers supporting downloading. i don't know if vimeo is one of the supported sites ... that's for you to experiment and find out.
13:23<SynrG>then vlc (with the appropriate codecs) or mplayer can play the downloaded flash video files
13:23<SynrG>i.e. vlc/mplayer both need the codecs, in case i wasn't clear
13:24<ompaul>Sandie: so the lvm reference are you trying to install it on a partition that had lvm on it at some time?
13:24<SynrG>likewise minitube. it is only going to be able to play things for which it has codecs (via phonon apparently)
13:26<Sandie>ompaul: it used to have xubuntu on it
13:26<ompaul>Sandie: if not perhaps you have a live cd there you could be root on it and cat /dev/zero > /dev/disknamegoeshere

14:06<SynrG>let's assume you mean "system" partition, for /
14:07<holden>Yes, that's the one :D
14:07<SynrG>how much space do you have on the drive? why cheap out at 10G?
14:07<SynrG>it depends on how much stuff you install.

16:51<Daemon>Hey! Im currently installing debian wheezy on my notebook. It has no cd-drive so i made a bootable USB-Stick. Works all fine - but: i need drivers for the networkhardware (LAN+WIFI). Otherwise i get a "very basic installation" and i dont want to do that. So i got the drivers - but the installer wont recognize them (if i put them on the "boot"stick or on another one).

17:50<BlueG>What Pin-Priority should I use for a repository if I want packages installed from it only when specifically requested, but I once installed I want them to continue to receive automatic updates?
17:50<BlueG>Initially I thought a negative priority accomplished this, but a closer reading suggested this will result in no updates unless I specifically request it again.
17:50<SamB>wouldn't that be 100?
17:53-!-cj_ [~cjac@199.200.31.149] has joined #debian
17:54<BlueG>Well, man apt_preferences says that a priority of 100 is assigned when the Release file is marked as "NotAutomatic: yes" and "ButAutomaticUpgrades: yes", which sounds like what I want.
17:56<BlueG>Although the description of priorities where 100 <= P < 500 "causes a version to be installed unless there is a version available belonging to some other distribution or the installed version is more recent", seems a bit less clear.

18:15<BlueG>I think I'm still confused. If a package from a particular repo is pinned to 100, but not available else where, if I try to aptitude install package, it will install the version from that repository, with out any indications of which repository it is coming from.
18:17<BlueG>When using a negative priority, the package is only installed if explicitly use aptitude -t release install package or aptitude install package/release, but it won't automatically update if a new version becomes available.

18:24<SamB>BlueG: generally it's assumed that when you ask to install a package, you damn well want that package installed
18:24<BlueG>I guess if you use a negative priority to prevent installing from a particular repository by mistake, you also need to manually request updates for it.

Alternatively, use <resolvconf> and specify the nameservers yourself: echo -e "nameserver a.b.c.d\nnameserver w.x.y.z" > /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base; resolvconf -u (where a.b.c.d and w.x.y.z are your ISPs nameservers).
