01:00<Reeckz>Weird, i get a 404 on some of the stuff regarding amd64 packages
01:00<delirium>Reeckz: netselect-apt is a tool that can help find the fastest mirror for you
01:00<gsimmons>Reeckz: The redirector service (used in the wiki example) will automatically select a mirror geographically close to you.
01:00<snogglethorpe>Reeckz: i sometimes get those randomly...
01:01<snogglethorpe>Reeckz: dunno the cause they geneally clear up afer a while, or maybe refetch the package-list
01:01<Reeckz>I've followed the wiki example, and it still wont locate openssh-server for me :(

04:36<mammutpanzer>Hello debian community. Short report: After trying everything with your help I send my PC to another computer shop and they found out that the mainboard is damaged. So it was not debian being somehow wrong but my hardware. Now I want to get a new PC and I got a few questions

04:38<mammutpanzer>I would like to get an SSD and a HDD I want to run the OS (debian) and IO heavy stuff on the SSD but run other stuff on the HDD. How can I do this? Afaik debian uses root and everything will be in the root file system and if that is on the SSD everything will be on the SSD
04:38-!-hub [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
04:38-!-automaciej [] has left #debian []
04:38<Calinou>you can install the root partition / on the SSD and the /home partition on the HDD

04:39<mammutpanzer>Calinou if I do for example sudo apt-get install iceweasel can I make Iceweasel to be on HDD?
04:39<mammutpanzer>Oh and may I ask how I do the home folder on the HDD?
04:39<peter1139>what does "debian uses root" even mean?
04:39<babilen>dpkg: tell mammutpanzer -about fhs
04:40-!-mode/#debian [+l 597] by debhelper
04:40<Calinou>you do not destroy a SSD by writing on it
04:40<Calinou>this is FUD
04:40<babilen>mammutpanzer: It really depends on your partitioning/filesystem scheme and how you distribute it on your physical devices.
04:40-!-Blizzbob [] has quit []
04:40<peter1139>usually you separate them because SSDs are a bit smaller than HDDs

04:41<mammutpanzer>peter1139: I am sorry if I was not clear but in debian you have root ( / ) and all files are underneath root. So if root is on SSD everything is on SSD or? If I install a package it gets installed somewhere underneath root which is on the SSD
04:41<mammutpanzer>Calinou I am not sure what you are asking for and what about this FUD?
04:42<mammutpanzer>babilen could you explain more?
04:42<babilen>mammutpanzer: No, not right now :)
04:42<mammutpanzer>Link to read somewhere?
04:42<peter1139>partitions are mounted to paths, so / is the SSD but the HDD gets mounted as /home or somesuch. this is normal
04:42<mammutpanzer>Or maybe keywords to search for ?
04:43<Calinou>a SSD with TLC will stand 707 TiB of writes until having reallocated sectors
04:43<Calinou>thus, you don't have to fear that at all
04:44<mammutpanzer>Calinou I am not fearing something the SSD is simply just 240 GB and I need certain programms to run on it for better performance, pictures, videos etc. can be on HDD
04:44<Calinou>then / on SSD and /home on HDD will do fine :P
04:44<Nemoder>mammutpanzer: once you mount a folder to a drive anything put in that folder will go on that drive. easy to see this with 'df -h'
04:45<mammutpanzer>but what for example when I do sudo apt-get install iceweasel it will be on HDD or?
04:45<mammutpanzer>I am sorry
04:45<mammutpanzer>On SSD
04:45<Nemoder>mammutpanzer: you can see what folders a package puts its files with dpkg -L <packagename>
04:46<Nemoder>something like iceweasel will likely have files in many folders
04:46<mammutpanzer>Yeah I saw that Nemoder but thanks for help
04:47<Nemoder>I imagine most of the data iceweasel slows down on startup reading is from your home folder anyway
04:47<mammutpanzer>You know I poorly come from Windows and for Windows it was (in my mind) easy to use SSD for OS and certain stuff and HDD for everything else. You simply had for example: C: and D:
04:48<mammutpanzer>Maybe debian is easier and I am simply not smart enough to figure it out :<
04:48<Calinou>you can do that on linux, except that it's /transparent/
04:48<Calinou>you won't notice any path difference between HDD and SSD, apart from the /home/user stuff
04:48<peter1139>mammutpanzer, a normal debian desktop install comes to less than 10GB
04:48<peter1139>so no need to worry with a 240GB SD
04:49-!-sandeepparitala [~sandeep@] has joined #debian

04:51<slush>mammutpanzer: when you have the root on your ssd and /home on hdd, then when you install iceweasel, it will be on your SSD. The files it creates when using iceweasel will be in your own home directory.

06:47<babilen>n_ed: That might have other reasons and I am quite sure that it does. My impression is that you have tinkered with your flash plugins quite a lot and I don't have time to debug this thorougly right now as I'll have an appointment in ten minutes.
06:47<Daaf24>Ok thanks . I'll read that
06:48<n_ed>babilen, ok, maybe you can help me some other time, thx anyways
06:48<babilen>n_ed: What I would try is to use a new test user and check the behaviour there. Regarding on what you've done in the past you might also want to check how many flashplugin .so files you have on your system and triple-check which are used by your browser(s).
06:50<babilen>n_ed: Furthermore I would re-run "update-flashplugin-nonfree --install --verbose" and test if flash is working in iceweasel and chromium. The output of those commands and all these data points would probably enable us to debug your problem further. Also "youtube doesn't work" is a very vague statement - what exactly doesn't work and what happens instead?

I have tried many Linux distros (however bloated they are), but the problem persists even with my sparse Debian setup. The whole system heats up (Laptop), the fan starts raging and after a while, I can feel the difference (pain on my wrists). You would think it is a hardware problem, but the funny thing is, on my previous Windows setup, it ran very quietly. Do you have
