00:59<cads>hey guys
01:01<cads>let P the packages of an installed Debian system and let G be the dependency graph of P. There is some minimal core set of packages P' such that for any package p in P, there is a package p' in P such that p' depends on p.
01:01<cads>Is there an easy way to generate P' for a given installed system?
01:01-!-babilen_ [~babilen@188-220-32-218.zone11.bethere.co.uk] has joined #debian
01:02<cads>P' is basically the smallest set of packages which would cause all of P to be installed.
01:02<SamB>cads: you must have typoed that because you didn't constrain P' at all
01:02-!-babilen [~babilen@babilen.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:02<cads>oops
01:03<cads>Let P' be the smallest set of packages such that for any package p in P, there is a package p' in P' such that p' depends on p.
01:03<jm_>how would you describe that in layman terms?
01:03<cads>thanks for catching that, SamB

01:04-!-MrRoyster [~MrRoyster@31.6.59.191] has quit []
01:04<cads>jm_: I'm looking for the 'top level packages' which, if installed, would force the installation of all the other packages.
01:04-!-etp [~etp@espcolo-webproxy01.nokia.com] has joined #debian
01:05<cads>Huh, perhaps more simply, I'm looking for all the packages that have no dependent packages
01:05<jm_>right, a minimal set of packages to install everything else
01:05-!-vladuke [~vladuke@92.55.17.161] has joined #debian
01:05<cads>rather, that have no installed dependent packages.
01:06*SamB doesn't know a way to compute such a set, and suspects there is possible ambiguity due to cyclic dependencies
01:06<Nemoder>is there something in particular you are trying to accomplish with this information?
01:09<cads>Nemoder: Yes. The information could be useful to help a (team of) administrator(s) categorize the installed packages on a system.
01:10<cads>Since top level packages will tend to correspond directly to a closely related cluster of system capabilities
01:10<jm_>cads: perhaps apt-rdepends and apt-cache dotty can help
01:11<jk->.. and debtree
01:11<cads>dotty output will absolutely help!
01:13-!-victor [~victor@190.0.167.182] has joined #debian
01:13<cads>cool, debtree and apt-rdepends both look like shotgun blasts to the problem's face
01:13-!-victor [~victor@190.0.167.182] has left #debian []
01:16<cads>SamB: If there are cyclic dependencies we have to amend the definition a bit, since if two top level packages are cyclically dependent it would make sense to include both of them instead of arbitrarily picking one - I'd drop the minimality constraint, and replace it with a more inclusive constraint..
01:17<cads>thanks guys, I think between apt-cache dotty, apt-rdepends, and debtree, I have enough to proceed

04:02<Chav>Hey. What is the purpose of the MiniSSDPD package? The manual says it has to do with UPnP on a network, but I'm not sure exactly what that means.

07:35<babilen>iiipod_: Any particular reason why you can't upgrade to wheezy? It should also be noted that the wicd version you use is pretty old and that you should upgrade it to a more recent version. I would *strongly* recommend to ugprade to wheezy and there really isn't an alternative to that. You will have to upgrade sooner or later an delaying this simply doesn't make sense.
07:35<babilen>Sammy123: yeah, I am not surprised by that
07:36<Sammy123>babilen: I'm not happy with it :( this means I have to stick with the existing system ...
07:36<babilen>Sammy123: I can't change that - It's the hardware.
07:36<iiipod_>thanks babilen i just want to use gnome2
07:36<Sammy123>I'm still very thankfull for all your help. At the very least, I learned a lot about Debian through this experiment :)
07:37<babilen>iiipod_: Gnome2 is no longer supported. You simply have to accept that and the sooner you do that the better. There are various alternatives like XFCE or cinnamon (in jessie/testing) in Debian and you *will* have to upgrade within the next 6 months. There is nothing you can do about it and the longer you wait the more painful it'll be.
07:37<Sammy123>babilen: MATE is not supported here, but still has support, right?
07:38<babilen>Sammy123: yeah, it was interesting while it lasted even though the constat "You would do it like this ..." "No, I can't it is not supported" was a bit, well, suboptimal.
07:38*Stummi took the gnome 2 EOL as reason to completly break with conventional DMs/WMs and starts using FVWM. Was a very good decission afterwards
07:38<babilen>Sammy123: MATE hasn't yet made it into Debian as its development approach does not fit well with some of our policies.
07:39<jm_>heh odd way to put it - I would consider fvwm to be a conventional WM :)

11:20<toni_>Hallo! When trying to mount a remote server within my home network via gnome-user-share and having checked before the correspondent option in gnome-file-share-properties, sometimes it does mount the remote volume right away when clicking on the server, but most of the time not, giving the following error message: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)
11:20<toni_>When it does not, after pressing repeatedly and very fast "enter" I finally get it mounted.
11:20<toni_>I wonder if modifying the DBus' timeout rate would not help this problem, and my question is then how to do it, since I have little clue about it.
11:20<toni_>In Squeeze it worked perfectly, in Wheezy not yet.

12:57<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. 15:05<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.

Use *any* installer, don't install the Desktop task and then install LXDE after the initial installation. The first two approaches are similar, while you end up with a slightly different set of metapackages with the third. End effect is the same though: You ahve a system with LXDE

23:40<matt_>i am upgrading from squeeze to wheezy and i get this error:
23:40<matt_>E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'libgstreamer0.10-0'. Please see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. (2)
23:41<matt_>anyone know how i can fix it?
23:41<themill>dpkg, squeeze->wheezy failures
23:41<dpkg>Try: (a) upgrade in 2 steps: apt-get upgrade; apt-get dist-upgrade (b) apt-get dist-upgrade -o APT::Immediate-Configure=0 (c) add squeeze back into sources.list; apt-get update; try again. (d) apt-get install apt; try again (e) apt-get install badpackage; try again (f) apt-get remove badpackage; apt-get install badpackage; try again (g) dpkg -r --force-depends badpackage; apt-get -f install; try again.
23:42<themill>matt_: ^^ that's a brief summary of what it already says in the release notes. (You are following the release notes, aren't you?)
23:43<matt_>yes, i have already done (a), (b), (c); the rest are not in the release notes

23:44<failmastah>dpkg, since you're the only one who knows whats going on here.. how should i get pass cryptsetup authorization without ps/2 keyboard to get into freshly installed debian instance? can't log in since 2010
23:44<dpkg>You are person #2 to send an unparseable request, failmastah
23:45<babilen>failmastah: do you mean "get past" ? and why didn't you manage to install an instance that was installed in 2010? why is that instance "freshly installed" ?
23:45<matt_>i will try your suggestions (d) through (g)
23:45<babilen>s/to install/to login/
23:45<failmastah>babilen, maybe, sorry for my english, this bug exists since 2010
23:45<babilen>which bug?
23:45<themill>matt_: (d) rarely works but sometimes does. You'll probably end up at (g), sadly.
23:45<failmastah>babilen, and this instance is freshly installed, this one #600356
23:46<matt_>when i try (d) I get the following error message:
23:46<matt_>The following packages have unmet dependencies:
23:46<matt_> initscripts : Breaks: nfs-common (< 1:1.2.5-3) but 1:1.2.2-4squeeze2 is to be installed
23:46<matt_> libgnome-keyring0 : Breaks: gnome-keyring (< 3.0) but 2.30.3-5 is to be installed
23:46<matt_> network-manager : Recommends: crda but it is not going to be installed
23:46<matt_> Breaks: network-manager-gnome (< 0.9) but 0.8.1-2 is to be installed

23:46<themill>failmastah: that particular bug was fixed a couple of years ago; what you might be seeing is the same symptoms for a different reason. Is this the first reboot after installing?
23:48<failmastah>themill, are you maintainer?
