00:06<boggle>will ssh/mosh go down during a distro upgrade?
00:07<boggle>if so, how can i upgrade a vps i have no physical access to?
00:07<themill>boggle: is your network managed by network-manager or is it a static configuration?

00:08<boggle>themill: i am not sure, how can i find out?
00:08<boggle>themill: so, probably network manager lol
00:08<boggle>themill: since i have no idea
00:09<themill>It's unlikely a VPS is using network-manager. Look in /etc/network/interfaces for configuration; see if the network-manager package is installed

00:15<cogito>Should i install Ubuntu instead of Debian?
00:15<Infiltrator>cogito: No.
00:15<jmcnaught>cogito: maybe try gnome instead of lxde?
00:16<themill>yeah, so network-manager wouldn't be involved in that. Yes, you should be able to upgrade over an ssh link -- 4.1.5 of the release notes describes doing exactly that. The ssh daemon is restarted but existing connections aren't dropped. I'd highly recommend doing the upgrade inside screen so if your connection goes down for any reason you can easily resume.
00:16<Infiltrator>boggle: You could try running a screen/tmux with apt* inside it.
00:16<cogito>I want the lightest possible linux, my computer isn't young
00:16<jmcnaught>boggle: are you using solusvm?
00:17<Infiltrator>boggle: What themill said.
00:17<jmcnaught>boggle: never mind
00:17<ixi>pretty sure something like awesomewm would be lighter than lxde
00:18<Infiltrator>cogito: The ligther environments are typically more difficult to learn, though.
00:18<cogito>jmcnaught, It's just that my previous 3 questions got no answer at all
00:18<jmcnaught>cogito: how much RAM does your computer have?
00:19<cogito>Infiltrator, as long as i can get access to documentation and answers, i can learn to use it

00:25<cogito>anyway to fix what themill was talking about "gufw is maked "OnlyShowIn=Unity""
00:26<cogito>jmcnaught, I keep finding documentation for Ubuntu

00:28<jmcnaught>a lot of Ubuntu (or any GNU/Linux distro) stuff will still be relevant to Debian. The stuff that's different between distros is how software is installed, and how/configuration of software happens.

00:29<jmcnaught>cogito: would be a good place to start :)
00:30<jmcnaught>cogito: you can install the book locally with the command (as root): "apt-get install debian-handbook"
00:31<cogito>jmcnaught, (as root) meaning sudo?
00:31<jmcnaught>cogito: "man" is great to use when someone tells you to use a command, you can check to see what it does first. "man apt-get" or "man sudo" for example.

23:42<themill>ixi: gzip -l foo.tar.gz; that doesn't take account of file sizes and filesystem block sizes of course
23:42<chealer>ixi: the tar file's size would make an excellent approximation
23:42*themill hands chealer a tarball of a million 100 byte files
23:44<Supaplex>themill: and it's all squid cache. muhuhaha.
23:44<themill>ixi: tar tzvf foo.tar.gz | some collection of awk to select the right column and add it up. But you'd still need to account for filesystem limitations
23:44<ixi>from gzip -l I get compressed: 7298744722 uncompressed: 4091706880 ratio: -78.4%
23:44<Supaplex>kvm cannot configure tun as a user (even though I'm in the kvm group). What's up with that?
23:44<ixi>how is that possible
23:45<themill>ixi: sounds like a numerical overflow in gzip's calculation
