02:27<Stric>Heya. I have a question about how apt chooses where to get a specific package from, given that there are multiple sources with the same version (over NFS and HTTP in my case). I'd like to make apt prefer to get them over NFS (local mirror) if that contains the latest version, otherwise HTTP (official mirror).

02:28<Stric>apt_preferences says "The APT preferences do not affect the choice of instance, only the choice of version.", which seems to be the case, I managed to get origin="" (for example my nfs source) set to prio 505 and origin="" to 502, still it got the packages from http. Both sources contain the same data currently.

More specifically, prone to dying if any X or kernel-related packages are upgraded or removed. Ask me about <nvidia-graphics-drivers> instead. 13:17<weirdtunguska>I'm finishing up installing wheezy on a virtual machine and will test if there was something borked on my real system.
13:17<weirdtunguska>but if I can't install libgtk2.0-dev:i386 on amd64 wheezy, that's a huge dealbreaker for me.
13:18<babilen>weirdtunguska: yeah, I have the same problem here (on a fairly well kept sid) - I am not exactly sure what causes this at this moment, but not everything is perfectly multiarch aware and installable. What do you need it for/
13:18<weirdtunguska>the program that I'm trying to compile needs libgtk2.0-dev:i386, and I can't change the architecture of the system to that.
13:18<babilen>weirdtunguska: Well, compile in a chroot or a vm. If it is a Debian package that is quite trivial with cowbuilder.
13:19<weirdtunguska>no, it's not a debian package, is an in-house software, quite old.
13:19<weirdtunguska>I compiled it on in a 32bit chroot
13:19<babilen>weirdtunguska: And what kind of program (amd64 after all!) depends on a i386 library for compilation?
13:19<weirdtunguska>but how can I run it outside the chroot?
13:20<weirdtunguska>nope, the program must be full i386 to work properly... long story short, it's a simulator that generates binary intermediate files, and those files must be 32bits. I can't change the code - it's VERY ugly - and it works in 32bits.
13:20<babilen>weirdtunguska: Well, apparently you cannot run that program (compiled for i386) on amd64 that easily because not all dependencies are installable right now. Can you, perhaps, compile it on amd64 *for amd64* ?
13:20<weirdtunguska>but the server that will use that program is amd64
13:21<babilen>weirdtunguska: Well, as you can see that is not supported (by *any* distribution or operating system I would guess) at the moment.
13:21<weirdtunguska>I can compile it for amd64, and part of if works, but there's this intermediate binary file that can't be amd64.

13:24<j4jackj>So why was I knocked out some time ago? Oh and I have a problem: I try to run a Linux Container and the computer shuts down.
13:24<weirdtunguska>the program needs X, and it will be served to several other machines via NFS. Do you think that if I build it in a 32 bits chroot and export it via NFS, it would run on the other computers in the network, if they all run Debian Wheezy amd64?
13:25<weirdtunguska>and just to confirm: on a freshly installed wheezy system, with just installation from the live cd 7.1.0, apt-get updated and upgrated and multiarch enabled, apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev:i386 fails.

13:40<weirdtunguska>nope, I'm working with groundwater flow and transport, and usually the multiphysics packages don't run this models very well.
13:41<weirdtunguska>but I'll check it out anyway
13:41<babilen>weirdtunguska: Is that software available under an open source license from somewhere?
13:41<weirdtunguska>nope, it's in-house, with decades of history of professors messing it up and saying that this or that bit is theirs.
