00:17<afro>Hi, all. I am brand new to debian (only ever used Ubuntu before) and am having trouble getting things set up. Feel free to redirect me to a more noob-focused channel. I cant figure out how to install anything, so far irssi and a wifi driver. I have used dkpg and apt-get install but I keep getting errors. Thanks
00:18<Nemoder>afro: do you have a wired connection? what errors do you get?

00:23<afro>Nemoder- I can get wired to work on Windows, but on Ubuntu idk how to bridge the connections. I'm on a diff computer using Ubuntu now. One irssi error says 'Package irssi not available, but is referred to by another package.'. Another times it has been 'irssi has no installation candidate'. I have the packages for irssi and iwlwifi downloaded, I just don't know how to go about installing them

00:55<unimatrix>well i did that both on the base machine and the vm

00:55<unimatrix>like that?
00:55<Supaplex>well, -A INPUT
00:56<Supaplex>like line 6 from your paste, but replace, no -i ethx and use optionally use your own log prefix.
00:57<Supaplex>if iptables-save -c shows anything but [0:0] in front, you know it's not triggered.

I have control over the server, so I know nothing server side has changed. I can also ssh to it just fine. I'm thinking it might clear up problems if I can wipe the stored credentials for the serer, but I don't know how to do that.

21:16-!-DennisTheTiger [] has joined #debian
21:16-!-bafu [~bafu@] has joined #debian
21:16<Argure>that would be the basic getup of my recommendation, yes.
21:17<Argure>feel free of course to change for where you think it might be beneficial for your server
21:17<Argure>e.g., for a mail server you can/shouldhave seperate partitions for /var/mail and/or /var/spool/mail
21:17<Argure>for a webserver you could decided to mount /srv read-only, etc.
21:18<iTycoon>makes sense, so, how would i properly partition 2 physical drives and factor in encryption? how many swap partitions are required?
21:19<themill>I wouldn't bother with separate partitions for most of those. Especially /opt.
21:20<iTycoon>i'm thinking it's not necessary for me to learn debian right now. i understand the theory and purpose but it's overkill for my needs.
21:20<Argure>encryption should be an option dring the install process
21:20<themill>There's very little utility in a separate /usr either these days. /usr-on-nfs is a thing of the past.
21:21<themill>(and never worked with debian anyway)
21:21<Argure>personally, I don't much bother with swap partitions much
21:22<iTycoon>i read somewhere they're required
21:22<Argure>I usually just have a small swap on servers because some weird programs expect it to be present
21:22<themill>iTycoon: it's required if you want to be able to suspend-to-disk.
21:22-!-Marc_Online_ [] has joined #debian
21:22-!-darkbasic [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
21:23<iTycoon>ah, i see, so a laptop feature, no?
21:23<Argure>swap can best be compared to the pagefile in windows
21:23<themill>not *just* that. But that is one situation where you may have read about it being required.
21:23<iTycoon>this i understand
21:23<iTycoon>pagefile and swapfile are interchangeable terms
21:24-!-darkbasic [] has joined #debian
21:25<Argure>some progams require or expect swap to be present and not having one can cause unexpected behaviour - but since a server shouldn't ever need to use swap for things other than that there's no reason to have a large swap file
21:25<Argure>hell, 4 MB would be sufficient.
21:25<themill>Argure: what programs expect that? That's pretty broken.
21:26-!-patryk [] has joined #debian
21:26<sney>and even if some program wants accessible swap, you can just make an empty file into swap rather than using an actual *partition*
21:26<sney>as long as it's talking to swap in a linux sane way, the program won't even know
21:26<patryk>hi all
21:27<Argure>themill: I've seen one or two; but I forgot which ones.
21:27<themill>Argure: I hope you reported bugs.
21:27<Argure>'working as intended'
21:27<iTycoon>hey patryk
21:28<Argure>themill: btw, the reason I put /usr and /opt on a seperate partition is so I can mount them as read-only
21:29<themill>Argure: yeah, that can be useful, although for the amount of use that /opt gets, it may as well live on the same partition as /usr and /usr/local. Splitting things up into too many partitions like this doesn't help
21:29-!-flypiper [] has joined #debian
21:29<iTycoon>so given my current partition scheme, what do i need to do to complete my debian installation?
21:30<Argure>I'd just take a look at what your server is going to be doing and partition accordingly
21:30<Argure>lets say you have a webserver; you may strongly want to consider mounting /srv as read-only
21:30<Argure>other than that, encryption should be an option during the partitioning process
21:31<Argure>keep in mind that if you're running debian as a virtual machine, and you also a) own the vm host and b) it is encrypted; there's little reason to also encrypt the vm (and actually weakens its encryption)
21:32<themill>Sure -- I'm just saying that 10 partitions is going to be overkill in just about every single situation.
21:33<iTycoon>that's just it. during the partitioning process, i erased the first drive, then encrypted it (took days), then the second. i thought the installer would install to the encrypted partition on the first drive, but when pressed continue, it errored saying not boot partition was present. i don't understand what i'm doing i guess.
21:34<themill>(the securing debian manual hasn't really been updated for over 5 years; I don't know that it offers much sensible advice any more)
21:34<iTycoon>for a learner server, 10 partitions doesn't make sense.
21:36<Argure>iTycoon: your /boot cannot be in an encrypted volume
21:36<Argure>so if you want to have an encrypted root partition you will have to make a seperate partition for /boot to reside on

21:40<iTycoon>how big does the boot volume need to be?
21:41<iTycoon>does filesystem matter? I don't know why one was ext4 and the other ext2.
21:41<themill>I'd also question whether you're making life excessively hard for yourself with encrypted disks on a server.
21:42<iTycoon>i just thought i would start encrypting everything. definitely made things more complicated.

21:43<iTycoon>I don't know why the logical partition on sda doesn't show up as an encrypted volume
21:43<Argure>for filesystem ext2 would be better as there's no real use for a journaling filesystem, though any would work fine
