09:12<lebernie>Hi, I'm trying to install firmware-7.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso from a USB key, but it stalls early with I/O errors on fd0
09:13<lebernie>this computer doesn't have a FD controller
09:14<lebernie>I think the BIOS is reporting a bad floppy disk type (13).
09:14<james41382>lebernie: on my computer the usb ports show up as sdx like my hard drives as well.
09:15<james41382>lebernie: so partitions might be sda1, sda2, etc. then usb key 1 is sdb1, usb key 2 is sdc1, etc
09:16<bernat>lebernie: does it boot from the USB? Can you show us the errors?
09:16<lebernie>The install menu is shown
09:17<lebernie>I can select the language
09:17<lebernie>and keyboard
09:17<lebernie>then the installer extract packages from the USB key

09:23<dpkg>To verify you have a valid and official Debian CD/DVD image, see http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/#verify . To test an ISO image was burned correctly, compare the output of md5sum filename.iso; dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c `stat --format=%s filename.iso` | md5sum You should compare this md5sum to the checksum for the ISO image on the mirror. See also <check iso signature>.

12:56<babilen>jacobi: Yes, Debian is a Linux distribution. See http://www.debian.org for details. But then you joined this channel (#debian) and you must have had some reason for doing so. You might be interested in joining us in an off-topic channel (#debian-offtopic, #moocows) if you don't have a technical problem.

13:01<babilen>jacobi: You want ##java on irc.freenode.net for information regarding Java programming. Please accept the fact that this is a very specialised help channel for Debian related problems. We can certainly help you installing and configuring Debian and might even be able to tell you how to install and use Java, but the programming language itself is not on-topic here.
13:02<babilen>jacobi: As you don't even know what Debian is you are also wrong in this channel. Do you use Linux already? If so: Which distribution? Are you interested in installing Debian and learning how to use it?

17:38<gabre>now i would like to edit this boot list (names, etc), but i dont know how

20:02<Chav>It doesn't give me the option choosing the DE, it just says Desktop Environment.
20:02<sney>it's in the boot menu for the installer.

20:04<dpkg>To install <LXDE> on established systems, ask me about <install x>, then: «aptitude install lxde». To install using Debian-Installer (if not using LXDE CD-1): from the Installer boot menu, select "Advanced options > Alternative desktop environments > LXDE > Install".
20:05<Chav>musca: thanks musca, but that's not an answer to my subsequent question.
20:05<sney>Chav, really, for the minimum size option just install with only the standard system utilities selected and when you get to a prompt on your installed system do 'aptitude install xorg lxde'. it'll give you the greatest control over it. 20:10<esseks>Chav, when installing I always deselect all package groups and get a ~300MB core install. Also play with negative pinning and "aptitude install --without-recommends" to further shrink install size
