00:00<toothpick>yes you are right
00:00<toothpick>Okay, so I will take the other approach you suggested, a tiny simple script
00:00-!-mikejones [] has joined #debian
00:01<LtL>toothpick: so make a script one-liner #!/bin/bash - second line, wine file.exe - save, chmod 755 file.exe then make a symlink.
00:02<LtL>toothpick: the bang line at the top, second line is the cmd
00:02<toothpick>LtL: thank you I am going to use that as template
00:02<toothpick>do I need the bang line at the top?
00:02<LtL>make executable, then symlink it... might work
00:02<LtL>toothpick: absolutely
00:03<LtL>you should use the full path the file too
00:03-!-scientes [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:03<toothpick>LtL: what should me the file extension for this script (sorry this is my first own script).
00:04<LtL>toothpick: none needed but .sh might be a good idea
00:04-!-taiten [~taiten@] has joined #debian
00:05<toothpick>LtL: o shit that just worked!
00:05<toothpick>sorry for profanity Ltl. I got little overexcited
00:05<toothpick>I created a file without extension
00:06<toothpick>and used your template and just changed the file path to full path of the exe
00:06<LtL>toothpick: linux doesn't need extensions like [cough] windows
00:06<toothpick>chmod 755 and it worked like a charm!
00:06<toothpick>i'm saying this all out incase someone else might want the solution here :) (trying to follow debian chat rules lol)
00:07-!-vortek [~vortek@] has joined #debian
00:07<toothpick>LtL: this is my first linux installed, I chose debian after looking around at different distros. I personally dont have a need for windows anymore
00:07<LtL>toothpick: the #debian channels have super helpers, i just hang out
00:07<toothpick>LtL: I spoke with a developer of wine and he helped me set it up. good bye windows
00:07<vortek>i got unstable and e17 working
00:08<LtL>vortek: damn good!
00:08<toothpick>vortek, nice..
00:08-!-rodric [] has joined #debian
00:08<toothpick>thank you LtL for the help !!
00:08<LtL>toothpick: my pleasure
00:09-!-cads [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:10-!-etp [] has joined #debian
00:10<toothpick>LtL: it all works now. Just for clarification, what is the #!/bin/bash for?
00:11<LtL>toothpick: it tells the script what interpreter to use
00:11<LtL>in this case bash
00:12<toothpick>oh okay. makes sense.
00:12<vortek>how do i get diferant e17 themes?
00:12<LtL>all scripts need a bang line, or shebang as some say.
00:12-!-rodric_ [] has joined #debian
00:12<LtL>vortek: no idea, apt-cache search e17 theme
00:13<LtL>toothpick: this is a 'bang' ! <-
00:13<LtL>exclamation point
00:13<toothpick>i see. It kind of reminds me of // comment line in C++
00:14<vortek>no lucck
00:14-!-mikejones [] has quit [Quit: I tripped over the plug]
00:14<LtL>arent those */ or \* er something, i havent written C in awhile
00:15<toothpick>yes those are for block comments
00:15<toothpick>and // is for single line comment :)
00:15-!-rodric_ [] has quit []
00:15<LtL>ah, i see..thanks toothpick
00:15<toothpick>you're very welcome LtL
00:16<vortek>what you guys recomend for a good c book?
00:16<toothpick>I mostly remember that stuff because our professor made us implement Binary tree to understand Unix file system
00:17<toothpick>and he wanted us to do it in C
00:17<toothpick>vortek, do you have experience programming in another language already? If so can I make a suggestion?

00:18<vortek>but i can learn quickly
00:19<LtL>vortek: anything published by O'reilly, or The Waite Group are god books, pricey though
00:19<LtL>i'm sure there are others
00:19<LtL>*good rather
00:19<vortek>i got the 2nd edition of the book by the wroter of c
00:20-!-Jekyll [~whodare@] has joined #debian
00:20<SamB>K&R, you mean?
00:20<toothpick>I second the opinion on O'reilly
00:21<toothpick>generally they are well written. You may check them at local library, they can often get them for you
00:22-!-ximion [~ximion@] has joined #debian
00:22<vortek>k thanxs man
00:22<toothpick>however it was best put by my professor, learn the mechanics of programming first. conditional statements, control structures etc
00:22<toothpick>and you can then master any language once you understand the technique
00:22<oem>what is most secure distro or os? true we should no longer use a hd?
00:23<toothpick>the most secure distro is the one that is used by someone with common sense knowledge of security
00:23-!-mikejones [] has joined #debian
00:23<oem>yes but what would be chosen?
00:23<oem>or a ibm with no modem
00:24<toothpick>modem or no modem makes no difference when it comes to data integrity. As I said, most security issues come in the shape of social attack
00:24<toothpick>for instance, a window popup asking you to input credit card information
00:24<toothpick>and user's mistakes
00:24<oem>java also yes?>
00:24<LtL>oem: debian is pretty hard to beat for security, the weak link is the admin
00:24-!-alvarezp [~alvarezp@2001:470:d:872:e2ca:94ff:fe6c:f55e] has joined #debian
00:24<oem>shitty code
00:25<toothpick>other than that, the protocols implemented in any linux kernel is robust that I wouldn't worry about it
00:25<toothpick>I second Ltl's opinion once again
00:25<oem>why is my win 8 and linux mint all one big server now?
00:25<toothpick>debian is rock solid and weak link is always the admin when it comes to linux
00:26<toothpick>LtL: I feel he is trolling? or is it just me?
00:26<oem>i have like 100s of users using network all i want is to meet talk and lean and build with them
00:26<LtL>toothpick: dunno
00:26<toothpick>oem, debian is a good choice of solid linux distro
00:26<oem>i am just handson I learn but much is over my head
00:27<toothpick>with patience, you can. and you only need to understand the basics premise behind security
00:27-!-vladuke [] has joined #debian

00:30<toothpick>there are many good helpers on this irc channel who will do their best to help you
00:30<LtL>oem: so fire up a irc server on your network and restrict it to your net.
00:30<toothpick>but you need to be precise

00:34<toothpick>oem, we don't appreciate offtopic subjects too much here. But you may try #debian-offtopic for your inquiries
00:34<LtL>and troll is to be determined.
00:34<oem>trolling for trolls in my book means lookin for bjs from fuglies what is trolling

00:53<peterS>insofar as I can discern that you even _have_ any specific questions, they don't seem to be on topic here

06:47<bremner>libapp-nopaste-perl is one

06:47<babilen>jalalsfs: I quite intentionally recommended running a distribution that supports MATE *iff* you want to run that, Debian does not and is therefore the wrong distribution. Mixing distributions will break your system and is absolutely not okay and I would also not recommend using the mate repositories.

Without this package installed, poor 2D/3D performance in the <radeon> xorg driver is commonly experienced. To acquire, ask me about <non-free sources>. This is not required for use of the <fglrx> driver.

Some hardware requires firmware that you have to install independently. You will almost never have to download anything manually and install it. In particular not drivers. If you do that you are almost certainly doing it wrong.
