00:05<topcyde>Crap! Can someone tell me what I screwed up. While compiling some software from source I got this. fatal error: error closing /tmp/ccNhJl0p.s: No space left on device compilation terminated. When checking disk usage analyzer it says 306.6 gb hard drive, used 11.9 available 294.7.

00:06<topcyde>Either it's lying to me or I screwed up and put a partition in somewhere I don't see.

00:08<SamB>topcyde: is /tmp a separate FS?
00:08<sney>it could be a tmpfs. then the out of space would really be OOM
00:08<topcyde>SamB: How do I check?
00:09<SamB>run "mount"
00:09<SamB>check if the output mentions /tmp

00:15<MisterE>hey guys, I can't remember what option I chose when I downloaded this distro… How can I see if it's 32 or 64-bit please?
00:15<topcyde>sney: OOM? -> out of memory
00:15<sney>that's what that stands for, yes
00:15<sney>MisterE: uname -m

00:20<Infiltrator>SamB, topcyde: To make it easier, you would probably grep it: `mount -n | grep "/tmp"`.

00:21<Infiltrator>(I know that my mount output is big and messy.)
00:22-!-bfly [] has quit [Quit: bfly]
00:22<topcyde>Infiltrator: comes out with nothing
00:23<Infiltrator>topcyde: Then that means that you don't have a seperate /tmp mounted.
00:23<Infiltrator>topcyde: What does `df --si` show for your rootfs?
00:23-!-Q-Master__ [] has joined #debian
00:23-!-thunderrd [~thunderrd@] has joined #debian
00:24<Infiltrator>Because your /tmp would be part of that, then.

00:27<topcyde>Infiltrator: I don't think this is good

00:28<MisterE>uname -n returns "kali1.0.3" (Based on Deb 6) but I'm not sure if that means 64 or 32 bit
00:28<topcyde>somehow I only have 9.9Gof root?
00:29<sney>topcyde: that 300-some GB must be mounted some3where else
00:29-!-Q-Master__ is now known as Q-Master
00:30<sney>MisterE: I said -m ; also, please ask kali questions in #kali-linux on freenode
00:30<MisterE>indeed you did I misread
00:31<topcyde>yep. It's mounted /home
00:33<topcyde>how can I slide some over into the root?
00:33<sney>topcyde: well, I think there's a way to specify what temp directory to use with a 'make' option, see 'man make' for that - but you should really clean up that /
00:33<sney>'apt-get clean' will get you started if /var isn't on a separate partition
00:34<sney>also make sure you don't have some gigantic files downloaded to /rtoo
00:34<sney>/root, even
00:35<topcyde> This /dev/disk/by-uuid/67046f2a-970a-429c-81b0-1607d4ff46cd is shown mounted on /
00:36<topcyde>could that be the issue?
00:36<MisterE>sney: i686 so 32-bit, ty
00:36-!-pavelkang [~kai@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:38<MisterE>and the reason I don't tend to ask non distro specific questions in #kali-linux is they are not really into helping people with general admin questions, they expect you to know this before you get into the distro, can't blame them
00:39<topcyde>sney, Infiltrator: Thanks got it compiling now.

01:45<torguy>why is it my usb would use fat32 as thedefault filing system?
01:46<torguy>wouldnt ntfs make the most sence?
01:46<dcraig>so it works everywhere
01:46<torguy>ya but fat32 is so eww
01:47<dcraig>seems fine to me :D
01:47<SamB>lots of things don't support NTFS
01:47<torguy>aside from linux?
01:48<torguy>which does support ntfs btw, albeit some tweaking
01:49<SamB>well, I think grub doesn't ... also lots of more exotic things, like Wii homebrew for instance ...
01:50<torguy>lol, well idk about that exotic shit, but seems like they should use ntfs IMHO
01:51<skaby>My wife's car has a usb in, I put pics and music on it, she went to the dealer and everyone was in it looking at the pics, noone had seen it before.
01:51<Infiltrator>torguy: ...why are you advocating the use of ntfs on #debian?
01:51<torguy>idk random thoughts
01:52<skaby>Of course you can't look at the pics while you drive. Put put the car in park and there is my daughter.
01:52<torguy>was just looking at my usb, and thought why cant i put a 6gb file on it
01:53<Infiltrator>torguy: You can; just format it with ext3/4. :P
01:53<torguy>ya i know lol
01:54<nevyn>torguy: I had to do that from <notlinux> so I used tar.
01:54<torguy>also in other news, my user cant connect to the x server
01:55<torguy>how do i undue this command xhost +si:localuser:root?
01:55*torguy glares at maxy
01:55<skaby>sorry if that was too off topic, just an example
01:56<torguy>im gonna try random guesses and hope my kernel doesnt break

02:05<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.
02:06<pmart>why does dpkg tells us to enable bpo for backporting from sid?
02:07<themill>because you will quite possibly need packages from there as build-dependencies for compiling your backport
02:07<themill>(somewhere between "possibly" and "probably")
02:08<pmart>you mean packages which are not present in stable at all?

04:50<carlodoro>ok, try to install rcconf, and then give sudo rcconf for seeing the startup servize/process when to start up your machine. With this program can you check if acpi-support is enabled.
04:50<carlodoro>it should be enabled
04:50<carlodoro>but check is a good idea
04:51<carlodoro>for most information:
04:52<JacobZ>thanks I'll look into that, jm mentioned 'quiet kernel', what is that?
04:53-!-Guest6889 [] has quit [Quit: Sto andando via]
04:55<carlodoro>It should set the kernel loglevel for init processes. Historically, /etc/rc.sysinit did this for us and set dmesg loglevel to 3, which was a reasonably quiet loglevel. Either add loglevel=3 or quiet to your kernel parameters.
04:56<JacobZ>ahh, thanks for your time everyone! Great help.

10:15<dpkg><sudo> can run a command as root but what is a "command"? "sudo foo > /etc/bar" will give you "-bash: /etc/bar: Permission denied". Your shell splits "sudo foo > /etc/bar" into "run the command sudo with the argument foo" and then "stick the output into /etc/bar"; it's your own shell (not sudo!) that will create /etc/bar and it doesn't have permission to do so. 12:28<retrospectacus>I've never seen configuration in /var/lib - data only. /opt only non-debian stuff
12:28<themill>zathras: debian policy §10.7.2: «Any configuration files created or used by your package must reside in /etc.» The only grey area here is where something is designed to be run as non-root and so the user that runs it might have config outside /etc
12:29<retrospectacus>(in tomcat /var/lib/tomcat6/conf is a symlink to /etc/tomcat6)

23:53<drk>hi. i installed debian on an old imac g5, ran fine but couldn't login to root user, might of typed the password wrong during installation and can't figure out what it is. so i booted into single user mode and changed the password from there. i used the shutdown command while i was done but my cord unplugged during the execution. after that the kernel seems to boot into a black screen with a mouse cursor. do i need to reinstall or is there something
23:53<sney>soundconjurer: I'm not sure, but you'll need to install fonts-unfonts-core and fonts-unfonts-extra at least
23:53<themill>soundconjurer: either uim-applet-gnome task-korean-gnome-desktop look promising (but I have no personal experience in this)
23:54<soundconjurer>Well, I tried ibus, that was a fail.
23:54<sney>usually for asian languages all you need are your spiffy keyboard, and fonts
23:54<sney>provided you have a unicode locale, anyway
23:54<themill>soundconjurer: "fail" doesn't tell us much
23:55<soundconjurer>It wouldn't utilize any fonts.
23:55<soundconjurer>It just typed blocks even though I had the Korean fonts selected.
23:56<themill>that sounds more like a font problem then an input method problem then
23:58<soundconjurer>Well, those fonts worked in ibus before... so, somewhere along the line they stopped. :(
