00:55<topcyde>I've tried several different commands to get the information about the latest installed version of a package. this one seemed to work the best $ apt-cache showpkg -q ,
00:55<themill>topcyde: what information do you want?
00:55<topcyde>but I'd like to avoid the screen dump caused by the reverse dependencies list when checking a library package
00:55<topcyde>sorry type slow
00:57<topcyde>putting the -q really didn't quite it any and I really just want the lastest installed version number. I know I can get it in aptitude and synaptic but I was wondering if there was an easier cmd line for it?

15:12<Lever>SynrG : can you recommend me file manager have good security and best interface and options ?
15:12<SynrG>etherock_, mshuler: the end result of that drive would be, when you run the win7 installer, it sees an uninitialized drive. it then will probably offer to put ntfs on it.
15:13<SynrG>of that *command*, not "drive", sorry
15:13<SynrG>Lever: i would not use a web-based file manager for the reasons already mentioned
15:13<SynrG>instead i would allow secure desktop access to the system, maybe tunnelling vnc over ssh or so.
15:14<SynrG>or if you're happy to do file ops from the commandline, then just ssh
15:14<Lever>but i really would like to use VNC but it slowm all my connections
15:14<SynrG>then just use ssh and use the commandline to manipulate files
15:14<mshuler>yep - that's why ssh would be best
15:15<Lever>there some files like php files need to be run in GUI and edit some of them
15:15<SynrG>then you can use sshfs
15:15<SynrG>then you can use the gui of your local system to edit
15:15<Lever>SynrG : i can uplaod files via sftp

15:18<mshuler>like most web developers, my suggestion would be to set up a web server locally, edit code as needed, then rsync code to the remote server - this also gives the advantage of having two copies of code - add local a local revision control system and you are starting to work like a developer ;)
15:19<SynrG>Lever: i would keep the web site in git and check it out locally on your remote machine
15:19<SynrG>Lever: i would use the remote machine to proof the pages, using whichever gui editor you like to see how it looks

15:20<SynrG>Lever: the rsync approach mshuler suggests would work just as well, and eliminate the complexity of using git ...

17:26<dualbus>mshuler: yeah, you can add NR == 51 {exit} to optimize that a bit. In the case where the file being piped is small, there's no gain, but imagine doing that on a file a few MBs big, even if you print a small range, it will still read the whole file unless you exit prematurely.

19:40<supaman>base-config is obsolete
19:40<dpkg>base-config (obsolete since Debian 4.0 "Etch") was a package to configure a Debian base install. Replaced by a single-stage installer, see for historical information. To install Debian from a Unix/Linux system, ask me about <debootstrap>. To reconfigure an established Debian system, ask me about <timezone>, <apt-setup>, <tasksel>. See also <reference>.

19:43<mshuler>ah, thanks - that was back when I was using FAI with sarge, then d-i preseeding took over in etch :)

19:43<pipeep>So I'm trying to package something using debhelper. It uses texinfo, and there's a source *.texi file, but the developer also included a compile *.info file. When the compilation happens, the *.info file gets rebuilt, but slightly differently, as some of makeinfo's behavior has changed slightly. This of course causes dpkg-buildpackage to freak out on subsequent builds because the file has changed. I can run it with the `-b` argument
19:43<pipeep>to bypass those checks, but that's not really a solution. What should I do here?
19:43<pipeep>I'd patch it so that automake doesn't rebuild that file, but I also have to patch the source *.texi to make it compliant, so I do need it to be rebuilt.

19:44<pipeep>Should I directly patch the built *.info, and disable recompilation of the *.texi in automake? That feels kinda hackish to me.
19:44<mshuler>pipeep: you might get better help on #debian-mentors for packaging
19:44<pipeep>mshuler, okay, thanks.
19:44*SamB was just about to suggest #debian-mentors as well

19:47<Celelibi>Ok, let's see.
19:47<SamB>the dash divides the version number into upstream and Debian-specific parts
19:48<Celelibi>Actually, I'm facing a bug. I've been told it have been resolved in trunk.
19:50<mshuler>oh, when someone says it's in trunk, that (usually) means it has not been released, yet - very little goes into Debian that is not a release (some things do, but they will have 1.0-1~svn12345 kinds of version numbers)
