01:51<jned>its so hard to make a debian email server
01:51<jned>must rely on gmail relay

02:04<themill>jned: there is a default configuration that works out of the box: "dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config" and answer the questions appropriately. Note that if this is a machine that's in a residential IP range then it's quite likely that other mail servers will reject your mail.

02:21<jned>Like Debian exim4 mta server and debian/windows/mac.
02:21<jned>themill, both
02:22<themill>Just about any mail client (mail user agent) can talk smtp to exim and send mail (Thunderbird etc). For them to receive email, you'd need an imap server like dovecot there too
02:22<jned>themill, dovecot is the easiest one?
02:22<themill>exim delivers the mail into a mailbox; dovecot provides access to that mailbox by imap

05:43<themill>EmleyMoor: the output of "apt-cache policy" and "apt-cache policy $package" can help here. Also do you need a dist-upgrade rather than an upgrade to get the updated packages? (does the new iceweasel have extra libraries it depends on)
05:43<babilen>Most IW versions do as they switch the corresponding xulrunner package
05:43<EmleyMoor>themill: The iceweasel problem was just a matter of timing...

06:08<babilen>adri: It's impossible to answer that; amd64 allows you to use more registers and processor specific instructions that you would miss out on with i386 ... memory footprint is/might be higher. There is no clear cut "yes" or "no" answer. Please bear in mind that the per-process memory limitation still exists even with a bigmem kernel (you can only have more processes that use all your memory collectively)

06:26<DrZaius>is it possible to find out the size of the downloads in and apt-get dist-upgrade? i mean, i can take the list and look for size in apt-cache show. Is there an automated way of doing that? or one simple one liner you can come up with? :>

09:33<NoReflex>hello! I want to install Debian stable on a machine behind an ISA server; this means I won't be able to use the netinstall image since I won't have access to the Internet during installation
09:33<NoReflex>which image do I need to use? the first CD image?
09:33<Maulkin>Hi.
09:33<NoReflex>for example: debian-7.1.0-amd64-CD-1.iso
09:34<Maulkin>NoReflex: The first one should give you quite a bit, depends what the machine is for.
09:34<Maulkin>Does it need a UI, for example?
09:34<NoReflex>Maulkin, I don't need UI
09:34<Maulkin>NoReflex: Then the first CD should be enough
09:34<nurko>hello. is there a way to use LUKS instead of just dm-crypt during the installation of wheezy? I'd like to use a same password for all of the disks, to avoid typing passwords for each encrypted partition on boot.
09:34<NoReflex>Maulkin, OK; thank you@

12:20<dpkg>Linux doesn't include support for SD cards because the SD Card Association license disallows open source drivers, probably because of their product's "security features" (read: soul-sucking DRM). For more information, see http://tuxmobil.org/mmc_sd_card_unix.html Some "SD Cards" seem to work in free software as MMC cards - you get the storage and bandwidth, but not the DRM - so they are GREAT!
12:20<wazdra>so, pushing it a second time removes the hardware lock, but i still have the software lock. Service network manager restart doesn't help to get this back.
