00:46 | <Nemoder> | !fixmbr |
00:46 | <dpkg> | To reinstall <GRUB> boot to your Debian install disk/live CD, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), then mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc ; mount -t sysfs none /target/sys), then chroot into it (chroot /target) and run "update-grub && grub-install /dev/whatever". See also <rescue mode>, <dual boot guide>, <supergrub>. Also works for EFI! |

01:31 | <shadowpho> | I have a picture of my parted print if that helps? |
01:34 | <stderr> | LVM has Physical Volumes (PVs). Those are normally partitions. From PVs you make Volume Groups (VGs). You can think of VGs as "hard disks". In VGs you make Logical Volumes (LVs) and you can think of those as "partitions". |
01:34 | <shadowpho> | stderr: http://i.imgur.com/RZV7RzD.jpg |
01:35 | <shadowpho> | how can I extract the LVs from the LVM? |
01:35 | <stderr> | A typical LV would be called /dev/mapper/VG-LV, where VG is the name of the Volume Group and LV is the name of the Logical Volume in that VG. |

14:33 | <patrik> | boootes: but be carefull, first of all you have to find out whether there is any free bank. In case of laptops you have mostly two banks and manufactures often install smaller rams to save some money. So in you case there can be 2x512MB rams. |

15:18 | <patrik> | Hi, I have tried to extract iso image of installation cd a partition on usb stick and also install grub to mbr. But it always fails on detecting cd, which is kinda expected to fail. I know I can use grub to boot iso, but has anybody succeeded to go around detecting cd ? Thanks. |

15:19 | <Nemoder> | !usb boot |
15:19 | <dpkg> | You can install Debian from a USB stick/thumbdrive/pen drive/key on x86 systems, as long as your system's BIOS can boot from USB. Details are in the Installation Guide, see http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03 and ask me about <install debian> for hybrid CD/DVD images. Use http://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ to write images from Windows. For BIOSes not capable of USB boot, ask me about <plop>. |

15:29 | <patrik> | Nemoder: I read that while ago. But it wasnt clear enough maybe. I created btrfs on usb stick, afterwards subvolumes describing what it is i.e. subvolume called debian_install and copied all the files from iso to that subvolume. I was hoping in a general way to have and be able to install diferent distributions if grub (most probably thanks to support of various fs and having shell available) is installed on that usb device. |

But it always fails on detecting cd, which is kinda expected to fail. I know I can use grub to boot iso, but has anybody succeeded to go around detecting cd ? I have placed this question twice already and please i have read dpkg about it. Thanks. |

18:37 | <stderr> | Ok. I just wanted to make sure, cause you said you were trying to "extract iso image". |
18:37 | <patrik> | stderr: Part of the problem is, that I formated that partition on usb drive as btrfs and there isnt any module for such fs excpet nls, isofs and fat. |

18:37 | <stderr> | Can I see the commando you're using to copy the ISO to the USB stick? |
18:38 | <stderr> | If you do it correctly, the partition(s) on the USB stick is deleted, so it wouldn't matter what filesystem you were using before. |
18:39 | <patrik> | stderr: I used to: dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdX and this it works just great. There is not any problem. |
18:40 | <patrik> | stderr: yes, you are right about loosing fs after copying iso with dd to device instead of partition. |
18:40 | <stderr> | And you're sure you used /dev/sdX, not e.g. /dev/sdX1 ? |
18:40 | <patrik> | stderr: yes, of course. ;) |
18:41 | <stderr> | Ok, then the previous partition and its filesystem should be gone. So I don't know why you even mention that it was btrfs? |

18:44 | <patrik> | stderr: well, I had a idea earlier today. What if I created a partition across the whole drive. 20:06 | <dpkg> | If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___.
