02:22<pollo>themill: networking is fine. I can ping the from the vm. Other wheezy boxes on the same subnet can update and access the internet so it shouldn't be a firewall issue. My other wheezy boxes are upgraded from sqeeze though. I did a test install of ubuntu to verify that the vm isn't broken and the ubuntu install worked as expected.

11:36<j_5>ok..sure i will do that..
11:36<j_5>i will get back to you on this.

11:36<babilen>j_5: How did you install the r8168 kernel module then?
11:36<j_5>there is an install script from realtek website
11:37<j_5>it does all the work...just execute the

18:47<wdoodle>Hello, I've got problem with initramfs that I'm not sure how to get around. I'd like to move the bootable drive (wheezy) from one box to another. Both are p4 (different clock speed), but they are not the same motherboard, video, sound, eth, etc. When booting in the new machine it drops to an initramfs prompt after giving up waiting for the root device.
18:47<wdoodle>Boot args look fine. The root device is listed by uuid and grml live shows that the partition still has the right uuid. cat /proc/modules lists dm_mod, pata_sis, ata_generic, libata, scsi_mod and microcode. But ls /dev doesn't show any disk devices. There is a mapper dir, but it contains only a char device named control.
18:47<wdoodle>My guess is that some chipset related modules are missing. The /proc/modules list looks a little sparse and doesn't have anything with numbers in it. Beyond that I'm lost.

23:05<pxr09>how important do you guys think it really is for the average linux user to learn how to do everything in the terminal that he does with a GUI?
23:06<sney>I wouldn't say *everything* but certainly all system maintenance tasks

23:08<sney>yeah, I suppose it depends on how we define the "average" linux user
23:08<abrotman>pxr09: there are methods to do lots of the clicky tihngs in windows via other methods, but most never care to learn them
23:08<pxr09>well i just am not convinced that those people who only use the terminal have a better experience than those that use only the gui
23:09<abrotman>pxr09: experience or more knowledge?
23:09<bnwkeys>I'm fairly new and slowly learning. I tend to forget the commands a lot, I should have like a BASH cheatsheet pinned to my wall or something.
23:09<sney>!tell bnwkeys about refcard
23:10<pxr09>well i can't argue that they don't have more knowledge... of one specific aspect of computing
23:10<abrotman>pxr09: which aspect is that?
23:10<pxr09>!tell pxr09 about refcard
23:10<sney>pxr09: linux OSes provide a pretty mature set of available GUIs these days that can do a lot of stuff... but the moment you have a problem with something, or you want to do something nonstandard, you're sorely disadvantaged without a solid command line knowledge
23:11<bnwkeys>Currently making my way through (learn linux the hard way), I'm on lesson 7 >.>
23:11<bnwkeys>thanks sney, much appreciated
23:11<abrotman>pxr09: also realize, if you run certain versions of Debian or Linux, things are more likely to break, so learning how to do things without X is an advantage
23:11<abrotman>dpkg: tell pxr09 about selftell
23:11<sney>er, np.
23:11<abrotman>pxr09: also note, at home, my laptops have X, at work, hundreds of servers don't have X
23:13<pxr09>it may be good for problem-solving but don't you think it is sometimes time-consuming to do things in the terminal that would only require you to click a button in a GUI application?
23:13<abrotman>it's rarely that simple
23:13-!-waterlae [] has joined #debian
23:13<SamB>yes, those are rarely the things we want to do
23:13<abrotman>setting up a VPN was probably easier in X, but I know far less about it
23:14-!-piper [] has joined #debian
23:14<abrotman>i don't know that it was less work because I didn't actually try to do it in the console
23:14<bnwkeys>with full use of wildcards and expansions, terminal is supposed to make certain maintenance tasks WAY easier and faster than point and click with gui
23:14<abrotman>(for my work VPN, I've done others, but they weren't cisco things)
23:14<pxr09>Well for example I use openbox and while I could use some terminal text editor and edit the xml files by hand, it's much easier to open up a GUI menu-editing package and make changes graphically.
23:14<pxr09>like i said, things the average user would want to do
23:15*abrotman loathes opening XML files in a GUI editor
23:15<pxr09>why abrotman? i can't get used to terminal text-editing
23:15<pxr09>it's so much faster in a gui app
23:16<sney>this discussion is now highly subjective
23:16<abrotman>that's you, not me ..
23:16<abrotman>sney: it sort of always was :)
23:16<pxr09>ya, it was
23:17<abrotman>pxr09: again, it's about what you want to learn.
