#debian IRC Logs for 2013-10-05

---Logopened Sat Oct 05 00:00:49 2013
00:01<Sark>Hello guys... Got a rather simple question (I think)... I can't get any sound out of a box I'm working on. It's a fairly standard VIA 82xx sound chipset
00:01<Sark>I've got the alsa utilities installed, and turned up the volume with alsamixer
00:01<Sark>and yet still when I play mp3's with mpg123, I get no sound.
00:07<Nemoder>!alsa checklist
00:07<dpkg>1) add yourself to the 'audio' group (log out & in again) 2) unmute and raise channels w/ alsamixer (also try muting some & toggle jack sense if available) 3) <pulseaudio> or other daemon stopped? 4) speakers on? 5) does "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav" work for root? 6) purge any installed <oss4> packages to remove ALSA blacklist. See also <list alsa users>, <alsa firmware>.

00:11<Sark>Yeah - been through all that - still no go. Can't get any sound out of it, even as root. Of course, this all assumes that my sound hardware actually DOES work.

00:15<AaroneusTheGreat>Sark: have you checked to see if the proper drivers are installed for that card? I don't know if that's a kernel module or not but it might be worth looking to see what package provides the driver for it.

00:16<AaroneusTheGreat>CampNowhere: bien
00:16<AaroneusTheGreat>Sark: i presume it's a pci card?
00:17<AaroneusTheGreat>maybe lspci will be able to tell you if it's being detected.
00:17-!-jae is now known as Guest1410
00:17<Sark>No, it's on the logic board - this is actually not a PC, it's a thin client that I've loaded linux on. Just the one board. And it's detected in lspci

00:18<Sark>I mean, I know it's not normal PC hardware, but it's not that weird. The VIA chipset is pretty normal and boring.
00:18<AaroneusTheGreat>have you checked to see if the correct default audio device is selected for output? some cards have several devices that can show up as output devices.
00:19<Sark>Yeah - this one only has the one output device, I can see it with alsamixer
00:19<AaroneusTheGreat>hmm
00:19<AaroneusTheGreat>I had a similar problem with alsa on this laptop and i eventually just switched to pulseaudio and my problems went away.
00:19<AaroneusTheGreat>that might not be an easy thing to do for you though.
00:19<Sark>And I *know* the stereo works, because I was using it with the CD player, then I changed it to the other input, and plugged the cables in, and I got the buzz noise as I plugged them in. So it's on the right input.

00:20<AaroneusTheGreat>yeah that sounds right
00:20<AaroneusTheGreat>well we know the card is functioning enough to be detected so there's probably nothing wrong with it physically although i may be wrong.
00:21<Sark>Could be the jack, maybe - I'd have to take it apart to check continuity
00:21<Sark>But I mostly wanted to be sure that the Linux sound system hadn't changed again when I wasn't looking.
00:21<Sark>I mean, it used to be so easy to check, you'd just cat an .au file to /dev/dsp ;)
00:22<AaroneusTheGreat>yeah that sounds like a lot of trouble when it's more likely to be a software problem if it worked in the recent past.

00:22<Sark>Well, that's just it - I don't know if it works. It could be the hardware in the thin client. That's kinda what you get when you're messing with junk that other people are throwing away ;)
00:22<Sark>It's just really, really unlikely to have a bad sound card like that.

17:40<dpkg>/etc/rc.local is a script called by /etc/init.d/rc.local which is typically one of the last things to be run during the boot sequence. If you have commands you want run at boot, edit /etc/rc.local (don't touch /etc/init.d/rc.local). rc.local is regarded as a hack, consider writing a real init script instead, ask me about <init.d>.
