This is either a keystroke (like Fn+F2) or a physical switch that you need to toggle to turn the radio on. When the kill switch is on, the radio is off (odd way of expressing things, isn't it?) and your network card won't work. See also <rfkill>.

I only ever used Opus in the context of speech and, specifically, with mumble. I tend to use ogg or flac for other media which is why I haven't really had the need to play opus encoded data with a standalone player.
