00:20<anon4256>Hey before I had to go to work I stopped by and asked if anyone might know the solution to my wifi problem, but I had to go before anyone responded. Does anyone think they could help?
00:21<ectospasm>anon4256: restate your problem

00:24<anon4256>Well, I had to instal the firmware for my wifi driver after the initial debian installation and I cannot seem to get it working. I installed the firmware but when I run "dmesg | grep iwl4965" I get this
00:25<ectospasm>Networking drivers and hardware is mostly voodoo magic for me... it always "just works"
00:25<anon4256>Pretty much the same here.
00:26<anon4256>It's weird because it say's not sutable firmware found but in my /lib/firmware
00:26<anon4256>it's right there iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode
00:30-!-mode/#debian [+l 566] by debhelper
00:30<gsimmons>anon4256: Have you reloaded the iwl4965 module since installing the firmware? (modprobe -r iwl4965; modprobe iwl4965)
00:31<anon4256>Yes I have, before I came here I was looking it up online but I didn't find anything that helped.
00:31<anon4256>No apparently I have not..
00:32<anon4256>I thought I did but no I didn't.
00:32<ectospasm>yeah, the kernel module will look for the firmware when it loads
00:32<anon4256>It's working now, thank you very much.

00:35<anon4256>Hey could any of you guy's recommend an ebook or a tutorial that will help better adjust me into Linux. I have been using it for awhile mostly off and on on hobby laptops and I really enjoy but it would be nice to be able to fix these issues on my own.
00:36<ectospasm>anon4256: used to be a good resource, but I think it's outdated.
00:36<ectospasm>Linux Journal has a lot of good articles on a ton of subjects
00:37<ectospasm> does as well, IIRC

00:50<anon4256>I'm using an old T-series Thinkpad which has an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140 display driver, and I cannot seem to find any drivers for it.
00:51<dondelelcaro>anon4256: I would have thought the nouveau driver would work for that
00:51<dondelelcaro>anon4256: which T is it, precisely?
00:51<ectospasm>anon4256: you probably want to use the legacy drivers...
00:52<anon4256>T-61 and yes nouveau isn't having any problems I was just under the impression I would get better performance using the nvidia driver?
00:52<ectospasm>anon4256: depends on what you want to do
00:53-!-wardhan [~wardhan@] has joined #debian
00:53<ectospasm>if you want to do anything 3D, go with the proprietary ones.

00:53<dondelelcaro>nah, noveau is fine for most anything 2d

00:54<anon4256>Well good one more system breaking issue out of the way..
00:54<dondelelcaro>and on the NV10 series, which that card is, noveau supports full opengl 3d anyway
00:55<ectospasm>dondelelcaro: does nouveau support anything like VDPAU yet?
00:55<anon4256>Great! I'm glad to have these main issues out of the way now thanks for the support guy's It is very appreciated.
00:56<dondelelcaro>ectospasm: and
00:56-!-bartm [] has joined #debian
00:57<ectospasm>so yeah, VDPAU is still the domain of the proprietary junk at this point
00:57<dondelelcaro>ectospasm: no, it's just that the cards require nonfree firmware in order to do VDPAU at all
00:57<dondelelcaro>ectospasm: has all of the information on it
00:57<ectospasm>still, proprietary junk includes firmware, no?

06:19<bartm>ardex: exact message and what were you doing when you got this ?
06:19<bartm>ardex: (it's better to immediately give these obviously needed details so people don't need to ask for them)
06:20<Jeremy_>Hello. I search some help to install free nvidia drivers. I have a black screen when I add this drive in xorg
06:20<bartm>Jeremy_: there was some good wiki page about nvidia drivers on
06:21<Jeremy_>bartm: It's about free drivers, not the proprietary
06:23<towo`>Jeremy_, your card is?
06:23<ardex>ok I'll repeat the function and copy msg...
06:24<bartm>Jeremy_: maybe nvidia gives paid support for the prprietary drivers :)
06:26<Jeremy_>towo`: geforce 720m

07:50<robert__>babilen: thanks, but what can i do then anyway?:)
07:50<babilen>robert__: Reading should also provide some information. In short: Debian stable (wheezy) comes with Gnome 3.4 and this will not change. (as "stable" simply means "not changing"); You will have to track a development release (testing or unstable) to get it which is associated with its own set of problems. (that you might be fine with, but running these takes a bit more knowledge and time)

11:29<sney>RumCoco: I would think so, the file structure is the same on all of them, you'd just need to do some stuff manually
11:30<sney>RumCoco: also, like 99% of systems do not need anywhere close to all those packages, the only reason to have a full offline copy of ALL the install media is if you don't have a reliable internet connection

For example; if you wanted the XFCE CD-1 of Debian 7 "Wheezy", you'd grab -> debian-7.1.0-i386-xfce-CD-1.iso from the mirrors (if you were going for i386 arch). 20:06<redder>mju a file called 8.eWhdFDMj just randomly appeared in my /home directory, its large, wont display its contents, cant be deleted, and i have no idea why its there

20:09<LtL>devil_: apparenntly its a directory with no contents but its over one GB is size

20:09<LtL>redder: ls -la junk/ and pastebin it
20:10<LtL>redder: if its one line and it should be just paste it here
20:11<mju>It's a hack and I don't know if it works, but you could try to move it to /tmp and the reboot. The automatic cleanup of /tmp during booting might remove it.
20:11<LtL>redder: no slash before the dir, that would be the root of the FS
20:11<devil_>redder: drmeyer is your user?

20:20<LtL>mju: nod
20:20<LtL>makes no sense
20:21<mju>Well, the size is the size of the directory, *not* the size of the files in it. It means that story all the file-metadata takes up 1GB of space.
20:21<themill>The directory size doesn't reduce when you delete the files from it
20:21<mju>Not sure what can cause that. (Except for a lot of files.)
20:21<mju>themill: Ah. Interesting.
20:22<themill>the space was once used by information about the filenames and inodes contained in that directory; the used space is not reclaimed (that I've ever seen at least). Delete the directory itself and then recreate it if you need to reclaim the space or make "ls" faster once more.

21:43<LtL>redder: but not in cli?
21:43<redder>LtL like do ls /home/drmeyer?
21:44<LtL>redder: well you should be in home now check with 'pwd' or yes type the full path
21:44<redder>LtL is there a way to get ur username to auto-load into the input instead of typing 'LtL' every time?
21:45<redder>LtL i see junk under ls
21:45<LtL>redder: use auto-complete in your client, like type lt<tab>
21:46<LtL>redder: from home dir type, rm -r junk/

21:48<redder>LtL, is there any free IM software that can link into skype?
21:49<LtL>redder: i wouldn't know
21:49<redder>LtL, and would there be a way for me to find local techs that might be able to look at the comp in person and see if they can figure out the problem?

21:50<LtL>redder: probably, but it'll cost you.
21:50<redder>LtL, might be worth it just to figure out what in the world is going on and kill the curiosity
21:51<LtL>redder: open another shell, become root and read /var/log/fsck/checkfs
21:51<LtL>just for fun

21:58<redder>ext3 i think
21:59<redder>it just says 'extended'
22:00<redder>i chose to do the encrypted LVM on install, so i dont know if that changes things
22:00<LtL>oh shit
