00:14<SamB>!ubuntu
00:14<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu on chat.freenode.net instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian> and <ubuntuirc>.

00:20<dpkg>You can install Debian from a USB stick/thumbdrive/pen drive/key on x86 systems, as long as your system's BIOS can boot from USB. Details are in the Installation Guide, see http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03 and ask me about <install debian> for hybrid CD/DVD images. Use http://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ to write images from Windows. For BIOSes not capable of USB boot, ask me about <plop>.

07:38<n4mu>Stummi: the short story is that I'm trying to use a program I used long ago, but it had some bug, so I upgraed... it fixes the bug but adds many others.
07:38<n4mu>So now that I've messed everything up, I'm going to try to clean up.

07:39<n4mu>themill: All I want to know now is, what comes from jessie or sid, I'll uninstall those and then reinstall what I need from stable.
07:39<Stummi>n4mu, how exactly did you installed the testing package in your stable debian?
07:40<Stummi>(dpkg -i x.deb, modifying the sources list, ...? )
07:40<n4mu>apt-get install -t testing program (after adding it to sources.list and adding in apt/preferences a lower pin than stable
07:40<Stummi>n4mu, just pin your stable repositories to something >1000 and make an dist-upgrade
07:40<n4mu>Stummi: aah. That sounds nice, lets see
07:42<Stummi>and for future: Simply don't add testing repositories within stable. If you want a more recent version of a package, take a look to backports
07:42<n4mu>themill: indeed, apt-show-preferences shows me that my Stellarium packages comes from Jessie when in fact it does'nt (or I'm misreading the output which either way... )
07:42<n4mu>Stummi: That's what I usually do, this package is not in backports.
07:43<n4mu>I will see if I can compile the program I need while remaining in wheezy.
07:43<Stummi>then, there just isn't a simple way to get your package into stable
07:43<themill>n4mu: you might like to remove jessie and sid from your sources.list; apt-get update; and then /msg dpkg not available
07:43<n4mu>I'm still wondering why dpkg isn't able to tell me (an added column?) from which version each package comes from.
07:44<themill>that information is transient -- it can change

23:45<dualbus>redder: how about sudo alsamixer and mute the beep?
23:45<redder>dualbus, where do i find the beep under the mixer?
23:45<SamB>dualbus: why do you assume the PC speaker is a channel on the soundcard, rather than an actual speaker?
23:46<redder>dpkg bell
23:46<dpkg>To disable the bell: "xset b off" in X, "setterm -blength 0" in console. For some reason, bash beeps excessively when in emacs (default) mode; "set -o vi" puts it in vi editing mode, which doesn't beep on partial completions. In konsole, Settings->Bell->Visible Bell. See also <pcspkr>, <shell beep>, <metacity bell bug>.
23:46<dualbus>SamB: it's called a "suggestion". That works for me.
23:46<redder>shell beep
23:46<dualbus>I'm not sure what's his setup.
23:46<redder>dpkg shell beep
23:46<dpkg>from memory, shell beep is man inputrc ; man readline (i.e. edit ~/.inputrc and set bell-style none) - also man setterm.
23:46<rainysia>Is a terminal beep? or editor `wrong` beep?
23:47<redder>rainysia, its anytime i delete more than is necessary

23:48<dualbus>There's visual bell, for example, in unicode-rxvt, I have the visual bell setup, so it just gives a visual cue

23:50<redder>dualbus, this works until i reset the computer, then i have to do it again
23:51<redder>dualbus, regarding i dont know how to answer your question
23:51<dualbus>redder: you could setup that as a login script... or whatever your desktop environment uses.
23:51<dualbus>redder: so that it's run before you login.

23:54<dualbus>You can have a noise-less bell.
23:55<rainysia>i have it last year. but it's gnone when i upgrade to wheezy. mayby it's a visual bell or BIOS bell
23:55<dualbus>Many programs use the bell to signal things, but having a bell doesn't imply it has to have a sound.
23:57<dualbus>redder: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linuxquestions-org-member-success-stories-23/turn-off-the-annoying-bell-pc-speaker-in-debian-etch-594405/ #3 post explains what blacklisting pcspkr is
23:57<redder>dualbus, i dont know how to answer your question anymore. My problem is that when i push "backspace" and there is nothing in the bar I am typing in my computer goes "beep beep beep beep beep beep" and its annoying beyond measure. When i use the code "xset b off", it stops the annoying noise, but when i reset my computer it comes back. I want a permanent solution. I have no idea what you mean by a visual bell, do you mean that if i hit backspac
23:57<redder>e instead of the annoying beep ill get a strobelight effect on my monitor?
23:58<dualbus>redder: ok, you can have a bell without sound, understand that?
23:58<dualbus>'bell' != 'sound'
23:59<redder>dualbus, so what is a bell without sound?
23:59<dualbus>redder: a visual bell
23:59<redder>dualbus, so a strobelight?
23:59<dualbus>redder: yes, I guess
