#debian IRC Logs for 2013-10-29

---Logopened Tue Oct 29 00:00:24 2013
00:01<rostam>All what I am trying to do is, to partition my disk to /dev/sda1 an /dev/sda2. And install a debian image on /dev/sda1 and another to /dev/sda2. So I will have two copies of debian on my disk. This is for an embedded system.
00:02-!-trifolio6 [~h@62.43.62.203.dyn.user.ono.com] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
00:04<Infiltrator>rostam: Nothing stopping you from doing so; but I don't think that the installer has an option to do two simultaneous installations. You'll just have to install; then install again.
00:04<rjsalts>rostam: not directly I don't think, but there are hooks at the end where you can do arbitrary scripts

04:50<boodie>Hi; after backporting the kernel, yesterday, I had some problems with X & gnome. Now some minor things remain unsolved: the webcam shows a black screen (although it's detected + it's turned on/off by the various v4l tools), the "pre-defined" desktop manager freezes after loggin with gdm3 (gnome-classic, WMaker work) ... ant hints?
04:53<SynrG>surely you mean 'installing a kernel from backports'. 'backporting' is the act of making a kernel that works on an older release.

06:02<Natureshadow>G'morrow
06:02<Natureshadow>I have a notebook here with a broken display EDID. I have a working copy of the original EDID data at hand, and have been using it with the proprietary nvidia driver, which can load it upon X startup.
06:02<Natureshadow>However, I a mtrying to use free drivers, and nouveau happens to lack this feature.
06:03<Natureshadow>I have thus recompiled the 3.11 kernel package with support for DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE and copied the EDID binary to /lib/firmware, passing it as drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware to the kernel
06:03<Natureshadow>But this has no effect whatsoever ...
06:04<Natureshadow>I seem to really need this very EDID file to get KMS working, because X won't even let me set the correct resolution manually.
06:05<Natureshadow>Any ideas on that?

06:15<SynrG>boodie: sorry, out of ideas on this one
06:15<SynrG>maybe someone can interpret that error output for you from mplayer
06:16<boodie>Here's the output of apt-cache unmet | grep v4l* | nopaste .... http://pastie.org/8439651
06:17<boodie>I have tons of unmet dependencies between packages ... is there a way to clean all of that?
06:17<SynrG>!localised errors
06:17<dpkg>Rather than hoping that we recognise what has gone wrong from the error messages in your native language, please provide any error messages in English. You can do this by setting your locale to an English one (e.g. C) prior to running the command, e.g. «LC_ALL=C apt-get -f install»
06:18<SynrG>your grep is wrong, by the way
06:18<boodie>ah, ok
06:18<SynrG>you are grepping for "v4" followed by zero or more occurrences of "l"
06:18<SynrG>"*" is not a glob
06:19<SynrG>it modifies the preceding expression "l"
06:19<boodie>damn ...
06:19<SynrG>it coincidentally works ...
06:19<boodie>Sorry ...
06:19<SynrG>which is why you might not have noticed it's wrong :)
06:19<boodie>indeed
06:21<boodie>Anyway, if I set my locale to English (LC_ALL=C apt-get -f install) would I need to reinstall my locale, or is it confined to that particular command?
06:22<SynrG>i'm not sure why you're pursuing this line of reasoning ... (apt-cache unmet shows all *possible* unmet deps in the archive, not for things you have installed)
06:23<Natureshadow>SynrG: The problem is that the nouveau driver will immediately bail-out if I disable Kernel Modesetting, and Kernel Modesetting won't work without the EDID file
06:23<ixi>boodie if I were you right now, I'll try talking to mplayer people in their irc channel on freenode
06:23<ixi>they know way more about video and cameras than probably anyone
06:23<boodie>I am tryng everything: given my level of knowledge, obviously (I'm not an IT professional)
06:23<boodie>OK
06:23<SynrG>Natureshadow: hmm. and kms is far earlier than X ...
06:24<SynrG>Natureshadow: maybe there's some way to force those same values for KMS in absence of the EDID?
06:24<Natureshadow>SynrG: right. So I found that kernel parameter somewhere over at Fedora, and decided to add the feature to the Debian kernel
06:24-!-sisyphe [~chatzilla@218.107.4.240] has left #debian []
06:24<Natureshadow>But there is still a chance that the problem I face with KMS is *not* related to EDID, maybe you could help me verify that :)
06:25<SynrG>apropos modsetting
06:25<SynrG>ok, double FAIL
06:25<SynrG>typoed, and wrong window
06:25<Natureshadow>The issue I see is that once udev comes up and modesetting is enabled, it outputs some random characters in the first line of the screen, then no screen updates are made anymore.
06:26<Natureshadow>It looks as though some graphics memory was dumped to the screen and then that's it
06:26<Natureshadow>*Because* the EDID is broken, I related that
06:26<Natureshadow>Maybe it's something different?
06:26<SynrG>this is deep magic
06:26<SynrG>sorry
06:27<SynrG>drm-kms(7) has some programmer-level doc on kms ... other than that, i am pretty sure the kernel docs have something
06:27<SynrG>but this is not my area of expertise
06:27<Natureshadow>Hmm, in any case, I got the system upgraded to sid and SSH enabled without seeing anything on the screen; then I remembered I could use nomodeset in the first place :D
06:28<SynrG>heh
06:29<Natureshadow>SynrG: But I could experiment with X a bit more. Do you know how I get min/max refresh rates and such out of the edid file? parse-edid only gives me a Monitor block with one resolution...

08:19<ivanoov>hi :)
08:19<boodie>Hi it's me again: solved the UVC camera problem. It was there, but totally dark (brightness set to 0). I've first tried several programs. In v4l2ucp I noticed a very faint green spot, corresponding to my window. Tweaking the parameters manually showed the picture. I couldn't make it permanent, though. luvcview did the job http://severity1.wordpress.com/2010/05/04/fixing-skype-webcam-is-very-dark-problem-in-ubuntu-karmic-and-lu

08:24<jm_>did you install nvidia driver?
08:25<Kuma>deb 7.2, updated kernel to 3.11-1-amd64, I've installed the unstable drivers for NVIDIA
08:25<Kuma>I think so

09:58<ManuelCalavera>Hey everyone I am having a problem with debian installation. The problem occurs that as soon as I boot the PC, the login screen appears and after I put the password it just keeps looping back to the login screen. If I go to tty1 and then startx then everything is fine.... I think the problem might come from using two screens, because when I startx I always have to reconfigure the nvidia settings. Any help would be more than appreciated.

If you try to uninstall nvidia (nvidia-installer --uninstall), then you break Xorg badly. nvidia-installer overwrites files at random, and has NO CONCEPT of package management. 21:51<abrotman>wait and see

21:52<chealer>carlodoro: um, no. I was just saying that http://packages.qa.debian.org/g/grub2.html is showing the wrong grub2 version for testing. This is the case since a long time.
21:53<Erik>thanks everyone, tommorow i test it. bye

21:54<carlodoro>is Grub2 a dependency of kernel 3.11.5 ? Is it not possibile use 3.11.5 with the last stable grub in testing ?
21:56<chealer>carlodoro: no, linux hasn't migrated yet. it seems 3.11.6 was uploaded just at the bad time.
21:56<chealer>carlodoro: no, grub is not a dependency of Linux.
21:56<chealer>carlodoro: What is your native language?
21:57<carlodoro>I'm from italian republic.

22:04<carlodoro>but there will be other days for waiting
22:05<abrotman>so wait another day
22:06<chealer>carlodoro: Do not expect to find the kernel team here. But it is fine that you ask here.

22:10<chealer>carlodoro: It is not in "Proposed testing", no
22:10<chealer>abrotman: the PTS advertises linux 3.11 in testing, but it's not there
