02:14<wilson>ok, so I am trying to connect to my debian wheezy using SSH, and my laptop is running ubuntu 12.04. My issue is that as soon as I restart the desktop machine, I can not ping it from any machine until I type an encription password. Is there any way I can let my NIC card always active?

02:15<SamB>wilson: you can't encrypt your main volume and still keep sshd running; it's just not possible

02:15-!-onnuc [~quassel@196.200.103.6] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:16<SamB>I mean, if only /home was encrypted it might be reasonable to try to make that work

02:17<wilson>yeah..what I would like to do is to be able to connect remotely to my desktop from my laptop. and yes my main volume is encrypted. Is it possible?
02:17<rjsalts>ipmi console?
02:18<rjsalts>assuming the hardware has that functionality

02:22<wilson>so there is no way I can do that then?
02:23<rjsalts>setup the serial console and connect it to another machine which is always on?
02:23<jeep>wilson: something simple like vnc ?
02:23<rjsalts>jeep: too early in the boot sequence
02:24<wilson>yeah that is what I thought, too early in the boot sequence
02:25<rjsalts>wilson: change the initrd to inclue ssh that asks for your fs password?
02:25<wilson>I do not think I can not use vnc, it is too early on the boot process, there is not ip address.

06:13<SynrG>!netinst
06:13<dpkg>netinst is, like, a small CD image with which you can install Debian. If, during the installation process you have a working Internet connection, you can install more packages straight away, otherwise, you will have a base install and more packages later. See http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ See also <various cd1>, <check iso image>, <dialup install>, <usb install>, <installer>.
06:13<viwal_>SynrG: thanks
06:14<SynrG>viwal_: additionally there are various CD images that contain the whole thing, but netinst is the easiest way assuming you meet the prerequisite "have a network during install"

08:54<not_tomato>Sorry for the (probably) stupid question, but I'm considering switching to debian and I don't really understand how nonfree packages are provided?
08:55<daemonkeeper>By enabling the non-free repository.
08:55<not_tomato>is there a repo i can enable to get them? or do i have to load them from third party sites
08:55<not_tomato>ah! great

08:55<daemonkeeper>It's hosted on the very same mirrors provided through the very same mechanisms. It's just another repository.
08:55<SynrG>!tell not_tomato about non-free sources
08:55<@Ganneff>depends on how non-free you go. the really bad stuff you must download from the providers. the halfway acceptable we provide.
08:56<daemonkeeper>Though that "really bad stuff" is not in $inser_distro_here either.
08:56<daemonkeeper>+t
08:56<not_tomato>I guess the only things I really need are graphics card drivers and dvd playback
08:56<SynrG>dvd playback you will have to get third-party
08:56<not_tomato>Ah, okay
08:57<SynrG>!tell not_tomato about libdvdcss
08:57<daemonkeeper>Not so much for freeness, but for legal reasons though.

16:57<ompaul>dotut: would SMART be involved, and while we are at it, write an incrementing tool and feed it that data as it if was from something being read but these things are normally done tee it into two disks one before and one after after every 1000 digits of pi have it add them all

19:51<ranix>hi all

19:51<ranix>how do I prevent cdc_acm from being associated with this device?
19:52<ranix>(hopefully, besides recompiling with cdc_acm as a module)

23:06<Tingle>Hi, I just installed debian 7 with gnome 3 for the first time and am having trouble moving files around - I downloaded firefox and would like to move it to usr/lib/, but everytime I try it gives me a permission denied. I added my user as root as a sudo doing #adduser christopher sudo and relogged my user. But it still gives me that error.
23:07<Tingle>and is it possible to rename a user?

23:08<dwk>You should install firefox through apt-get. If you want a newer version, see here: http://mozilla.debian.net/
23:09<Tingle>I downloaded it fresh from firefox website
23:09<Tingle>isnt that the newest
23:10<Tingle>mm ok I will
23:10<Tingle>but still, I would like access to move files around and put things into that folder
23:10<dwk>Downloading direct is not the best way to install firefox on Debian. P.S. Debian calls firefox "iceweasel" so look for a package called that.
23:10<SamB>Tingle: you aren't really allowed to put things in /usr/lib
23:11<Tingle>oh
23:11<Tingle>iceweasle is already installed
23:11<Tingle>I thought that usr/lib is the equivalent of program files

23:11<SamB>you want to use /usr/local for stuff you install without using the package manager
23:12<Tingle>and where inside local
23:12<Tingle>it has bin, etc, games, include, lib, man, sbin, share, src
23:13<Tingle>or directly into that

23:16<SamB>Tingle: well, in actually you probably just want to let firefox install where it wants to install; mozilla presumably knows about the conventions and won't install somewhere stupid ...
23:17<Tingle>k, but if weasle is already installed, I dont need to install it I take it

23:40<dwk>Tingle: you do not have write access to /usr/local/share as a non-root user. You should not be creating files there. If you're installing a theme it can usually be put in your home directory. If you really must put files in /usr you need to be root.
23:41<Tingle>mm no, im wanting to mount the virtualbox share folder to there with # mount -t vmhgfs .host:/ /usr/local/share/vmshare
23:42<Tingle>but I have to create the vmshare folder first because it said mount pointer does not exist
23:42<Tingle>eh mount point
