00:34*SamB shudders at the idea of non-programmers
00:34<SamB>goldfenrir: that would be your home directory
00:35<chris901>I am new here.
00:35<goldfenrir>but when i use cd ~/.local/
00:36<goldfenrir>SamB: I move to /root/.local
00:36<chris901>is this a place where error codes live?
00:36<SamB>goldfenrir: oh, you must be in a root shell

00:37<goldfenrir>SamB: and then i use cd /.local
00:37<chris901>like registry in Windows?
00:38<goldfenrir>SamB: i got a error
00:38<SamB>goldfenrir: that's because /.local is a different directory entirel
00:39<goldfenrir>SamB: but i dont understand, where is ~/.local/? And why I cant move to this directory using first cd ~ and then cd /.local/?

00:41<SamB>any path starting with / is an "absolute" path, and starts from the root, which is called "/"
00:41<buff>chris901, there is no registry. errors and logs are in /var/log config files in /etc and user folders
00:41<SamB>"/root" is not the root
00:41<chris901>SamB is a programmer? Systems Engineer?
00:42<SamB>I have no idea what you're on about with that "registry" stuff
00:42<SamB>what do you want to do?
00:42<chris901>recompile edubuntu
00:45<goldfenrir>SamB: Thanks a lot, i undertand now
00:45<chris901>what do I do?
00:45<chris901>I need the source code first..
00:46<goldfenrir>chris901: I m a programmer
00:46<chris901>I need a coder to add a few things, delete a few things
00:46<SamB>the reason root's home directory is called "/root" and not "/home/root" is that /home might be on a separate filesystem, and the root user is kind of important for recovery purposes in exactly the sort of circumstance where /home would tend not to be mounted
00:47<goldfenrir>SamB: :D ty, This explain a lot

00:48<goldfenrir>chris901: I m computer Science, so I can help you

00:49<chris901>I have never been able to get slackware to work
00:50<SamB>chris901: well, if you find a thing that isn't as you like it, and you can determine the file responsible, do "dpkg -S /path/to/file" and then something like "debcheckout $package", where $package is the package that dpkg told you owned that file ...
00:50<SamB>you'll need "devscripts" for that

22:45<sney>allow-hotplug and auto are interchangeable in /etc/network/interfaces, having both will do nothing
22:45<AaroneusTheGreat>hmm okay nevermind that bit then

22:46<sney>Abbott, the '/etc/init.d/networking restart' method isn't really reliable. ifdown eth0;ifup eth0, then see if you have connectivity
22:47<Abbott>i'll try that and comment out the ipv6 line now
22:47<AaroneusTheGreat>in the networking reference it says auto is for making it start the interface at boot and allow hotplug is for starting at hotplug events. I suppose during boot it probably receives a hotplug event when the interface becomes powered by the motherboard right?
22:48<AaroneusTheGreat>or any time it receives an errant frame maybe?

22:55<Abbott>wait. if my DHCP range on my router is from to and i'm trying to assign it, it would still take it, right? the DHCP range only has to do with what it will automatically assign things
