01:45<nocturnal>is there a way to restrict the uid number range used for created local accounts? because I had a situation where the splunkforwarder agent deb created a splunk account with uid 2800. the package could not know that I had samba AD uids mapped to 2000-4999 so that local splunk account conflicted with some random AD account.
01:45<nocturnal>I want to avoid this situation in the future.

01:45<nocturnal>and I doubt I could if the deb package used absolute UIDs
01:46<nocturnal>which it must have done, but is there a way to catch it at creation?

01:54<rudepeople>anyhoo... anyone familliar with the new process for setting display configurations globally... the process that replaced xorg.conf?
01:54<nocturnal>xorg.conf is split into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
01:54-!-vladuke_ [~vladuke@79.104.6.121] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
01:55<nocturnal>but same syntax as before so technically you could have your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/old_xorg.conf
01:55<SamB>does it not still read the old file too?
01:56<rudepeople>nocturnal: I thought so... but no /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/... previous configurations in Archlinux (blasphemy, I know) ignored that location... is that not the case in Debian?

02:02<rudepeople>nocturnal: nope. for whatever reason xorg.conf.d is being ignored...
02:04<nocturnal>I would first check the Xorg log and then I would try running strace -ff X to see if it got any errors and which paths it tried to open.
02:04<nocturnal>but I can't recognize the error, so all I can give you is troubleshooting tips.
02:05<rudepeople>thank you... my troubleshooting skills are crap. looking at the xorg logs...

03:23<marsboer>if you want to limit all icmp requests you would use: iptables -A INPUT -p icmp --icmp-types any -m limit --limit 1/second -j ACCEPT
03:23<acald3ron>yes its a scrip that used to have in centos, but a migrated to debian.
03:24<acald3ron>ok let me try.

07:36<peter_>hi
07:36<Gamer1204>Why does the compress menu not include ISO?
07:36<Gamer1204>I know other distributions have
07:37<abrotman>compress .. iso?
07:38<valdyn>Gamer1204: iso does not compress
07:38<Gamer1204>well, I need an iso for my vm, to pass on data
07:38<SynrG>context? i'm a little lost, here ...
07:38<valdyn>now thats one convoluted way to pass data
07:39<valdyn>creating an iso image that then gets "mounted" to the vm which in turn lets you read data off it

07:40<valdyn>Gamer1204: worst case you can still use scp or winscp

07:41<SynrG>i'm still lost on "Compress menu". dunno what that is :)
07:41<Gamer1204>but I just find it a quick sloppy way to just make an iso
07:41<Gamer1204>uhh rightclick on a file, there is a dropdown menu with compress
07:41<SynrG>but regardless, would be nice to know the particulars of your case so we can give some more specific advice.
07:41<SynrG>gotcha.
07:41<SynrG>in GNOME, then
07:41<Gamer1204>true, in gnome

07:42<Gamer1204>I need to switch to another dm just to make an iso? seems highly a fix
07:42<SynrG>and why would you compress the iso rather than compress the data before putting it on the iso? (or why use an iso at all?)
07:43<petn-randall>Gamer1204: Nobody said that.

07:44<valdyn>Gamer1204: theres a few command line and GUI tools which can create iso9660 filesystems - take your pick, install it, use it
07:44<abrotman>I think he's trying to do ith from inside nautilus?
07:44<abrotman>the actual tool he's using might be helpful
07:45<SynrG>right. he said "right-click a file" and later clarified "in GNOME"
07:45<SynrG>so we know that now.
07:45<valdyn>abrotman: what would nautilus use?
07:45<Gamer1204>and yes I use naut
07:45<Gamer1204>as file explorer
07:45<SynrG>"make a filesystem from these files" is not a thing that is convenient to do from picking them from a file manager.
07:46<SynrG>normally an ISO is for a specific media size ...

11:41<wekalaner>what's the way to go to use full disc encryption in debian stable? i am planning to install it tomorrow but i am not sure what's the debian way for fde. Formerly, in archlinux, i had a separate root partition encrypted with luks and on this root partition i placed the keyfile for my home partition, which was then mounted automatically as soon as i unlocked the root partition. I don't fully understand what options the debian installer offers
