10:37<babilen>SynrG: IIRC it doesn't
10:37<SynrG>txt-file1: way, way, way off on a tangent :)
10:37<SynrG>please let's just stick to getting Schnabeltier on a supported release of Debian
10:37<SynrG>in the simplest possible fashion
10:38<SynrG>until we discover otherwise, it's his misuse of an unsupported 3rd party tool to make the USB media that is screwing up the install.
10:38<SynrG>we shouldn't advise contorted ways around this problem :)
10:38<txt-file1>you are right
10:39<Schnabeltier>okay, i´ll search the usb stick which booted (serveral of mine did not), format it as fat32 and extract the current net-install-image to the root folder of the stick
10:40<SynrG>you don't need to format as fat32
10:40<SynrG>you don't need to "extract" either
10:40<SynrG>just use win32diskimager, put in the usb stick, and write the image to the stick. done.
10:40<babilen>Schnabeltier: Write the image *directly* to the stick. It contains everything from partition table to filesystems to actual data.
10:40<SynrG>(of course, this replaces the entire contents of the stick with the image)
10:40-!-Diwoka [~Diwoka@rny93-4-82-231-55-159.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #debian
10:40<SynrG>and that's how it makes it bootable without anything special done by software.
10:44<Schnabeltier>step 1 is taken, i´ve found the stick...
10:45<Schnabeltier>step 2: i would suggest to format it to fat32 only to clean it up because now there´s the other debian install disc copied on it
10:45<SynrG>there's no reason
10:46<SynrG>the imagining process completely replaces the contents of the stick
10:46<SynrG>so formatting it is a waste of effort
10:46<babilen>Schnabeltier: "formatting" means "filesystem creation" in this context which is not necessary.

10:49<Schnabeltier>the win32 disk imager want´s an *.img file to be the source, does it work with *.iso too?
10:49<SynrG>yes
10:49<SynrG>not just *any* iso
10:49<SynrG>but this specific iso is a 'hybrid'
10:50<SynrG>!hybrid iso
10:50<dpkg>Since the 6.0 "Squeeze" release, Debian installation images for x86 systems - e.g. <netinst>, <CD1>, DVD1 - are hybrid images. These can be written directly to CD or HD Media (e.g. USB thumbdrive) without further preparation. See http://www.debian.org/News/project/2010/14/#hybrid for details. See also <install debian>, <usb install>.

11:57<SynrG>this is an easier thing to do if you have a linux system handy to prepare the stick. you can do it from a live system if you don't have a linux system installed already.

13:15<SynrG>in fact, i submitted a patch so you can specify an array of different resolutions. so i use:
13:15<SynrG>$geometry = ["640x480","800x480","800x600","1024x600", "1024x768", "1280x1024", "1440x900", "1680x1050"];
13:16<SynrG>then depending on what physical display i'm on, i can xrandr to resize the remote display to something suitable.

14:56<vvas>Hi, I upgraded my Debian sid yesterday and now Skype fails to use my webcam for video (although the microphone works fine, go figure). I was wondering if someone has encountered this / found a workaround?
14:57<vvas>(The microphone is also part of the webcam, if that wasn't clear enough.)
14:57<sney>skype is not supported
14:57<sney>if you can reproduce the issue in something that isn't a proprietary mystery, then ask again in #debian-next
14:58<wallzero>If I plug my laptop into the bridge, I am able to connect without issue. I believe the bridge is setup correctly and Debian is having an issue.

17:40<wallzero>It would explain why other devices were working fine. Without a static IP, they had a dynamic ARP. Static ARP was on by default for all static IP's.

19:22<sauron_>you can get a list of the packages it wants and then apt-get --download-only on another computer

19:23<sauron_>I'm not sure I see the point though, as you'll still have to get those packages to it over the network unless you have the option of sneakernet....
19:24<retroj>the other computer is not on bandwidth-limited internet, and i can copy the packages over with a usb drive or such
19:24<sauron_>ah, ok. If you can cart a drive over and plug it in directly, then you're fine
19:25<sauron_>fwiw, if you have the space and bandwidth, you can grab a full mirror for the architecture you care about, and then just plug that in. Should be probably between 100 and 200Gb for amd64, I'd expect, and the debian mirroring scripts are pretty easy to set up.
