02:12<t0ke>I'm trying to install Java in iceweasel, following the instructions here https://wiki.debian.org/Java/Sun#Installation, but I get "E: Unable to locate package make-jpkg" when I try and run make-jpkg
02:12<t0ke>Any ideas?
02:12<themill>t0ke: which release of debian is this for?
02:12<t0ke>wheezy 7
02:13<themill>installing the "icedtea-7-plugin" package probably suffices for you then
02:13<SamB>yeah, there is not even a Sun anymore
02:13<jm_>otherwise make-jpkg is in java-package

04:02<stevenm_>Hi, I have a command aptitude search '~M!~R~i' <-- i know what it does, but could someone help me translate how it does it?
04:03<themill>!aptitude search
04:03<dpkg>extra, extra, read all about it, aptitude search is a powerful searching facility that by default only searches package names, but can be made to search priorities, installation status, dependencies etc. See /usr/share/doc/aptitude/html/en/ch02s04.html (aptitude-doc package), http://aptitude.alioth.debian.org/doc/en/ch02s04s05.html or ask me about <aptitude docs>.

04:05<stevenm_>so... ~M is find those that were automatically installed
04:05-!-[_aeris_] is now known as _aeris_
04:05<themill>so it is the set: (automatically installed) and (not (dependencies of (an installed package)))
04:06-!-bluenemo [~bluenemo@p4FF5B02D.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #debian
04:07<stevenm_>hmm how come ~M!~R doesn't work then?
04:07<stevenm_>why check the package that depended on another is installed when ~M lists only those installed anyway
04:08<themill>~R needs to act on something
04:08<stevenm_>so ~i is just the shorting something to get it to do?
04:09<stevenm_>*shortest
04:09<themill>~i is installed packages, so ~R~i is the set of the dependencies of the packages that are installed
04:09<themill>if you wrote it as ?reverse-depends(?installed) that might be more obvious
04:10<stevenm_>ah I see so ~R isn't based on the results of ~M - it's independent
04:10<themill>yeah running the two separate terms together makes them an "and" (or intersection, if you like)
04:11<stevenm_>cool - i get it... can you think of any other better way determining installed recommended packages?

04:13<jm_>sure
04:15<themill>'?and(?automatic,?not(?reverse-depends(?installed)))' ... not sure which is more pleasant to read
04:15<grove>while we on the topic, is there a way to make "~r amd64" a default search term? (as I have done the multi-arch thing to get some i386 packages, e.g. `aptitude search dovecot` lists every package twice. which is a waste of lines in my terminal)
04:15-!-berto [~berto@fanzine.igalia.com] has joined #debian
04:16<themill>stevenm_: recommended packages are supposed to be there in all-but-unusual situations. It's unlikely that your system is that unusual... they're a "breakable-depends" more than the softer sounding "recommends".
04:17<themill>grove: not that I know of other than by making a shell alias or function for it

04:18<jm_>i am happily using APT::Install-Recommends "false"; :)
04:19<stevenm_>themill, I understand - I just don't do recommended packages on servers... if I do it's because I've explicitly asked for them
04:19<stevenm_>themill, first thing I do is turn them off... but it's nice to install the 'ssh server' task when the debian cd installs and then trim the recommended fat off the ssh server task afterwards
04:20<themill>I don't think there's anything special about a server vs a desktop here.
04:20<stevenm_>plus there is stuff like ibritish and iamerican - and I really don't need dictionaries on a nameserver :)

07:10<dpkg>hold is a status flag that tells the package manager to not automatically upgrade a package. To hold a package 'echo $package hold|dpkg --set-selections' or 'aptitude hold $package'. Note that "aptitude hold" is ignored by other package managers (i.e. Update Manager, synaptic, apt-get) and aptitude won't necessarily use holds set with dpkg; see Debian bug #137771.

18:36<dpkg>If you have to ask, you shouldn't. No, really. #debian does not normally support sid because if you are using sid, then you should be able to support yourself. 18:43<SilverSlimer>guys, is it normal that the nvidia proprietary driver would give me more issues than nouveau would?
18:43<SilverSlimer>(like graphical glitches on wake from sleep_
18:44<EmleyMoor>SilverSlimer: Each has its own glitches...
18:44<SilverSlimer>which would be preferable (from a reliability perspective)?
18:44<EmleyMoor>SilverSlimer: Whichever works best for you.
18:44<EmleyMoor>YMMV, as they say.
18:45<planetmaker>for me the nouveau driver would give epilepsia... flickering every minute or so
18:45<SilverSlimer>so far nouveau is better in debian (which is usually not the case elsewhere)
18:45<planetmaker>and use what works best
18:45<SilverSlimer>in other distributions i mean
18:45<SilverSlimer>i use a geforce 310m and it seems that nouveau already supports most of what this chip is capable of
18:46<planetmaker>yeah, works nicely on my other machine
18:46<planetmaker>geforce 450GT here which really works badly
18:47<SilverSlimer>well, i'm planning on converting my windows gaming machine to a debian-based gaming machine using the nvidia driver + steam on a geforce 660ti. i'm wondering whether it'll be a disaster or not
18:47<planetmaker>I plan to give jessie or sid a shot with that in the holidays... maybe that works much better in that respect
18:48<SilverSlimer>i don't recommend sid
18:48<SilverSlimer>it's the newest stock but mess-ups are a regular thing
18:48<planetmaker>I won't kill my working system for that :)

18:49<acald3ron>im used steam in debian Jessie, its work well.
18:49<bernat>SilverSlimer: try always the latest drivers, are you on wheezy?

18:50<SilverSlimer>bernat: testing / jessie
18:50<bernat>then you're using drivers in experimental, aren't you?
18:50<planetmaker>bernat: you mean the drivers imported from jessi or sid?
18:50<SilverSlimer>right now i'm speaking to you on my laptop which is completely free meaning that i'm using nouveau
18:51<bernat>planetmaker: ?
18:51<SilverSlimer>but i was thinking i can turn my gaming machine into another debian testing machine except with the proprietary nvidia driver on a 660ti
18:52<planetmaker>bernat: the main "problem" I have with my current wheezy install is the support for the graphics card, which would indeed probably allow some games work much better with new(er) drivers
18:52<planetmaker>so similar to what silverslimer seems to want there
18:53<bernat>planetmaker: you can install newer propietary nvidia driver from backports

20:50<snogglethorpe>AFAICS, gnome3 uses a (rather small) top-bar, whereas other DEs use a (often bigger) bottom bar
20:50<snogglethorpe>gnome3 also puts a lot of stuff in the "pop up" display that other DEs keep displayed all the time

21:02<snogglethorpe>then it would use 0% of the screen :]
21:03<SamB>how do you get it to show?
21:04<snogglethorpe>SamB: i dunno the details, but gnome3 uses a top-left-corner mouse hot-spot anyway, so that would a natural method
21:04<SamB>okay, so that's one pixel
21:04<SamB>not too shabby
21:04<snogglethorpe>for display you get everything tho
21:05<snogglethorpe>and because of the rounded corners on window title bars, I guess that particular pixel wouldn't be usable for input in most cases anyway :

22:29<gsimmons>cahewson_: You can manually download the firmware-b43-installer and b43-fwcutter packages from packages.debian.org (http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/firmware-b43-installer); a standard Debian install should fulfill the other dependencies.
