04:37<holden87>Hey Debian users, i just have one question regarding chromium browser. Does it get updated through official debian repos?
04:38<holden87>Or was there an esr of some sort that will stay through most of the Wheezy's life cycle?
04:38<txt-file1>holden87: the security team updates chromium
04:39<txt-file1>or maybe it is even in the normal repository
04:39<SynrG>is your question really, is there an equivalent to mozilla.debian.net for chromium? please note that mozilla.debian.net is a developer-run service but not part of debian's repositories
04:40<holden87>txt-file1: so you get newer versions through the lifecycle of Wheezy? SynrG: Yes, something like that. But i installed chromium from synaptic, and the version seems to be (almost) current, or somewhere near that...

04:40<SynrG>no, you don't get newer versions throughout wheezy
04:41<SynrG>not from the main repo
04:41<SynrG>just like any other piece of software, including iceweasel. however, for some software there are backports at backports.debian.org
04:41<SynrG>there doesn't happen to be a chromium backport. i assume this is because it's too hard

07:27<anna>jm_, I see, this is a "hybrid" iso, so I guess the dd command will overwrite the default partitioning on the usb drive ?

07:28<anna>jm_, I see, thank you!

07:30<babilen>anna: I also wouldn't recommend to use dd as cp is easier to use and faster (as compared to the command you use) -- The command would therefore be "cp the-debian-image.iso /dev/sdb ; sync"

07:31<babilen>anna: You can, naturally, use dd, but I would recommend to use a larger blocksize than the default. Use "bs=1M" (or 4M or so), but then dd has such a weird syntax and cp scales the blocksize automatically.
07:31<babilen>(and then there is dcfldd which is the more powerful alternative to dd)
07:32<anna>babilen, I see. I have executed dd already, but I'll keep that in mind in case something goes wrong
07:33<babilen>anna: The result should be identical - It is simply that I personally find cp much easier to use than dd (no if=... of=...), you simply don't need its features (such as copying "five blocks of size foo with an offset of bar") and its default blocksize is suboptimal for large amounts of data.
07:34<babilen>And then I am too fond of dcfldd ever since it has been pointed out to me to use dd even if I need its features ;)

07:36<anna>babilen, I too use cp for everything else, it's just some example I found on stack overflow which had this. I assumed there's something magical with dd being able to copy the raw image instead of just the .iso file. Thanks for the advice :)
07:37<Stummi>you could also do 'cat debian_live.iso > /dev/sdb1'

07:39<Stummi>the problem with dd is it only reads, then writes, then reads, etc... Which wastes time, especially if you are writing to another device as you are reading from. It would be more clever to read the next block already while writing the first one

07:40<babilen>anna: dd is not special at all, data is data and everything is a file. What dd allows you to do is, for example, to copy specific blocks of data that you can define quite nicely. (e.g. MBR backup with "dd if=/dev/sda of=/path/to/mbr.backup bs=512 count=1"

12:17<sney>kminor, perhaps, but those solutions aren't supported here. I think there may be 3rd party repos... but #debian only supports debian stuff, not everyone else's

13:06<sney>marko_, the reason I sent you the information from the dpkg bot is because those are the official instructions for backporting any debian package for stable
13:06<marko_>ok good point
13:06<sney>marko_, since xfce 4.10 is not in stable, it needs to be backported from sid. this is the recommended and supported method
13:06<petn-randall>marko_: What are you missing in xfce 4.10 that you don't have in 4.8?
13:07<sney>marko_, since my brain is not an encyclopedia, if I was going to walk you through the steps, I would be asking the dpkg bot the same questions. it's quicker if *you* just try following the steps yourself, and ask for *specific* help if you get stuck.
13:07<marko_>it looks better and more funcional
13:07<petn-randall>marko_: ... but's it's also less tested, and more buggy.
13:07<sney>petn-randall, we've been through that part already ^^
13:08<marko_>used xfce 4.10 on mint and it worked fine
13:08<sney>marko_, since mint is not debian, there are a lot of differences and you have no way of knowing if something else in the system could cause a problem
