12:22<valdyn>SynrG: as I understand it that really would be the fault of debians default session script
12:22<valdyn>SynrG: but i cant complain about it because i dont use it
12:23<johannes_climacus>linuxator: as i am using a beaglebone black and the os is installed on the emmc, i have a hard limit of 2 gig of space...
12:23<valdyn>johannes_climacus: your xorg install can be trimmed down alot, but that is something for later *after* you have a wm and things run ok
12:24<SynrG>johannes_climacus: anyway, "so that python scripts which use Tk and Tkinter will display properly ..." depends on which scripts
12:24<johannes_climacus>in order to preserve space for logging, i was hoping to utilize as little space for xorg. if there is a way to reduce the footprint of xorg by using a dm, then i am all for it
12:24<SynrG>as i said, some apps depend on having a session started. some don't
12:24<valdyn>johannes_climacus: try to concentrate
12:24<valdyn>johannes_climacus: no one asked you to try a dm

12:28<icetee>petn-randall: nmap has a bug. when i enable my infiniband, it does not find any network interfaces
12:29<johannes_climacus>in my n00b-ness, i apparently have been muddled in my communications. i will install fluxbox and restart x
12:29<SynrG>johannes_climacus: without the wm you're not going to have control over things like window stacking, focus, etc. ... if it works for what you want it for without a wm, it will be totally by accident :p
12:30<valdyn>johannes_climacus: once you have done that, you can use dpkg -l to list installed packages and find by yourself or with the help of someone else what packages you dont need
12:30<petn-randall>icetee: Oh. nmap is pretty much the best port scanner out there. Why do you need to specify an interface?
12:31<valdyn>icetee: i never ever specified an interface in nmap...

16:03<valdyn>cozy66: the logical solution is not breaking debian by using nvidias installer
16:03<teward>Anuska, I strongly recommend you just change the web root that Apache reads from for your site to somewhere in your user's home directory
16:03<teward>(leave /var/www alone, IMO)
16:03<Anuska>teward where i change that in httpd.conf?

16:29<Kasayarou>I'm trying to boot Debian from a net-installer USB stick on a quasi-new system and failing. I can successfully boot GParted via USB, and I was able to boot from the USB in VMware on my Windows box (via Plop). I have no usable optical disc burners. I'm not sure what to try next.
16:29<xander>hi everyone! I need to know if it is better to install debian 7 i386 or amd64 in my notebook. I have a Hp pavilion dv6 with processor intel core2 (2.60 per core).

18:12<new139131>Alright so I will put the swap on the HDD then, thanks for help. :)
18:12<sney>right. which was way more of an issue with first run SSDs than now
18:12<sney>if you have a normal amount of ram you probably won't use swap much anyway, unless you're using suspend to disk or have huge caching operations
18:12<soundconjurer>They still have that problem... but yeah, not to the same extent.
18:12<new139131>I have 16 gb ram
18:12<sney>you will probably never use swap
18:13<soundconjurer>unless you hibernate
18:13<sney>yeah
18:13<new139131>Hmm, I often close down my pc when I dont use it, except maybe sometimes when torrent is running, but thats about it.
18:13<soundconjurer>My set up would be OS to the SSD, home and swap to the HDD
18:13<new139131>I have read mixed things about swap, but you are sure I dont need it?
18:14<sney>swap is virtual memory
18:14<sney>it's a space on disk used for ram when you have no ram left, or for things that don't need to be active in ram
18:14<new139131>Yes I know, I read somewhere I think on stackoverflow about if using swap or not.
18:14<soundconjurer>I just set up my SELinux
18:14<sney>stackoverflow is full of people who have no idea what they're talking about
18:14<soundconjurer>Worked like a charm.
18:14<sney>swap is exactly like ram, except it's on your disk and stays persistent with the power off. that's all

23:05<lisbeth>Hi. I am on a fresh install of Debian 7.2 Wheezy. I can't shut down my computer through GUI, and can only accomplish it by using "sudo shutdown 0". Doing this doesn't shut down my computer but instead takes me to the login screen and I can shut down from there.
23:06<lisbeth>Sorry, KDE version.

23:38<lisbeth>stder_dk the problem is not that I can't shut down in console. Halt seems to work just fine. The problem is that I can't shut down through kmenu gui options.
23:38<SamB>maybe ask #debian-kde ?
23:38<lisbeth>good idea, thanks
