You can unpack the firmware.tar.gz manually to the second partition on your USB (after creating a filesystem there) with CD1, DVD1, ... or you can use the netinstall image with firmware. For your mom i suggest Debian because is rock solid and it does not break , realy NOT! right now i'm installing Debian stable in my second machine (netinst multi-arch=500 mb). When you comfortable and power user in Debian go with Testing or Sid :)
