00:48<internat>randomish question.. is there a temp sensor on most computers that can be accessed through linux?
00:49<SamB>I think so
00:49-!-mahipal [~mahipal@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:49<jordanm>internat: yes
00:50<jordanm>internat: you can use the "sensors" command. KDE has a hardware temp widget, gnome probably has something similar as well
00:50<SamB>this seems badly-described ...
00:50<SamB>,package fancontrol
00:51<SamB>,info fancontrol
00:51<judd>Package fancontrol (utils, extra) in wheezy/i386: utilities to read temperature/voltage/fan sensors. Version: 1:3.3.2-2+deb7u1; Size: 42.4k; Installed: 69k; Homepage:
00:51*SamB suspects they forgot to write a specific description for this binary package ...
00:51<internat>ill go looking
00:51<internat>i found hddtemp
00:51<jordanm>,replaces fancontrol
00:52<SamB>that wasn't a suggested package, btw
00:52<SamB>just something that looked odd in "apt-cache search temperature" output
00:53<jordanm>SamB: they wrote a specific description in "this package contains..."
00:54<jordanm>but yeah, the short description doesn't make much sense
00:54<SamB>I'm sure lintian has already told them this

05:37<babilen>citizen53: fwiw, I don't think that you'll have any problems right now, but I can understand the wish to be able to run os-prober without any warnings. The script does quite a lot and IIRC even mounts a number of filesystems to figure out if they contain anything "bootable" and it looks as if the warnings stem from that.

Is there a way to fetch the sources of prog 1.0.1-1 ? When doing apt-get source prog=1.0.1-1 it fetches 1.0.1-1~test1 instead because it matches the version against binaries instead sources.

13:04<V13>In short, this is all about the prefix matching against the version as done by apt-get which I believe is well know. I'm just asking whether there's a workaround.
13:04<rivarun>during an installation using an unstable/ mini.iso, i am asked to chose between linux-image-amd64 and linux-image-3.12-1-amd64. are these not the same? ( )
13:05<abrotman>rivarun: no, choose the former, it's the metapackage
13:05<dondelelcaro>V13: it's supposed to be using exact matching, not prefix matching
13:05<V13>dondelelcaro, I'm pretty sure it doesn't.
13:05<rivarun>abrotman: oh. that makes sense. another question. what does +55 refer to on that page?
13:05<dondelelcaro>V13: it might not be, but that would be a bug.

16:45<SynrG>this is due to shortage of ram on the host ...
16:46<SynrG>then the driver will decide to give you back some ram if the guest's memory needs grows ... if it can.

16:46<hadi>host=the main server of vps provider?
16:47<hadi>derp. so that basicly means it'll fill up the memory every time unless i need it then it clears up?
16:47<SynrG>yeah. it deliberately signals to the guest "hey, there's not as much RAM as your allocation would seem to indicate"
16:48<SynrG>but it does have a provision to give you back some pages from the host's RAM if you need it ... obviously that can't exceed the amount of actual RAM the host has, though :)
16:48<hadi>i do not understand something though;maybe because my english is not that good, why it claims memory if the host's ram is low.

16:49<SynrG>well, then the guest will relinquish real pages that otherwise would be tied up in buffers/cache, you see?
16:49<SynrG>if ballooning didn't force those pages to be reclaimed, then the host would eventually run out of pages for all its guests.
16:50<hadi>SynrG: oh thanks for explaination i got it!

16:55<hadi>SynrG: thanks man for all of that. it took a long time for you to figure~
16:55<SynrG>the OS wants to keep those pages around in case they're needed again. this makes IO faster for things that are re-accessed later

16:56<hadi>also i don't like this. probably will give away the host after the time ends, migrate to some other hosting that has no exsi virtulisation
16:56<SynrG>normally that doesn't cause any problems because the OS can reclaim those buffers any time it wants.
16:56<SynrG>but the host has no idea about those pages that can be reclaimed ...

18:55<gui_arruda>rowinofwin: Thanks. How is Jessie? Is it "stable" enough? I mean, for tipical use, it is not a server, just a personal computer
18:56<Natureshadow>gui_arruda: it has been observed that sid is often more stable than testing and receives security updates faster
18:56<rowinofwin>gui_arruda: I have used Jessie a bit, I prefer to use and recommend using stable as a base and upgrading components as you need
18:56<Natureshadow>Outside a freeze, I personally think going with sid is a better choice than testing
18:56<rowinofwin>that said, I normally work on servers, not desktops
18:56<rowinofwin>sid can be much better for desktop
18:57<Natureshadow>gui_arruda: but note that you might fail to get support for it
18:57<rowinofwin>Testing is not really the best of both worlds, more of the worst of both
18:57<rowinofwin>You will have trouble getting support, get half up to date software, have some stability issues, get regressions on occasion etc
18:58<rowinofwin>sid has more but the benefit of cutting edge software is better and you get all the latest firefox etc without too much hassel
18:58<rowinofwin>Personally on my home machine I have stable with custom kernel and Xen for virtualisation
18:58<Natureshadow>plus devs work on sid so you have a chance to get quick fixes there :)
18:58<rowinofwin>it can be much quicker to get a fix on sid than on testing
18:59<Natureshadow>think of testing as something that broken software enters after bugs have stayed unnoticed for long enough :P
18:59-!-helma [~matt@] has joined #debian
18:59<rowinofwin>gui_arruda: does that answer your question?
19:00<SamB>Natureshadow: "quick fixes" are one reason to use

Use apt-get -t sid install foo; to install foo from sid rather than testing as usual. WARNING to SYNAPTIC users: Synaptic ignores Default-Release: set Preferences->Distribution
19:00<SamB>stands for "testing unstable mix"
19:00<gui_arruda>ok, but I must confess that now I am a little bit worried. :) I tought testing was ok. Just saying, I use the stable version, a few years ago I started using it as testing than Wheezy becomes stable, than I continue using it

19:02<rowinofwin>Long story short, debian's packaging process and moderation team are really good, the issue is the difference between sid and testing, or a lack therof
19:02<Natureshadow>but it also means that if testing breaks, you might have to wait longer for a fix to enter the distribution
19:02<rowinofwin>there is not a huge amount of benefit in using testing for most use cases

19:03<Natureshadow>at that point, I assume that testing will only get better :)

19:03<rowinofwin>I would recommend using it within a few months of the release, as at that point it is essentially what will be released version wise, but getting bug fixes etc
19:04<rowinofwin>I love sid

19:05<rowinofwin>it is a preroll of sid
19:06<rowinofwin>So I have this weird issue with sound, does anyone here know much about the audio setup on debian?
19:06<gui_arruda>uhm, ok. I prefer kde instead of gnome. This is not a problem, right?
19:07<rowinofwin>I am using kwheezy as a base for installing at the moment, nice and easy
19:07<rowinofwin>you can dist-upgrade from that if you like
19:07<rowinofwin>simple like mint, but all directly debian based with kde
19:07<abrotman>This is #debian, we do not support other distros here
19:08<rowinofwin>kwheezy is not a different distro, it is a modified installer/preroll of debian, does that count a separate enough? It is 100% debian based and olny has software preconfigured/installed
